Non fiction stories about growing up/living during the fall of the USSR/Communism?

Been reading modern travelogues around ex Soviet states like The Curtain and the Wall by Timothy Phillips and Sovietistan by Erika Fatland.

Wanting to read some more personal experiences with the fall of communism. I have Free by Lea Ypi on my next to read

It doesn’t have to be a biography of a revolutionary. My favourite parts of the curtain and the wall were the regular people he met along the way and the intell of Soviet life. In Sovietistan, once again my favourite parts were her recounting of the bizarre life under the strange Turkmen dictators and the extremely sad marriages and rapes of Kyrgyz women

Internship without doing internship elective

First year communications student trying to get as much experience as possible. I got a media intern role at an independent music label (so pretty laxed) and the hiring manager said she will let my uni know.
I’m not taking the 52714 professional internship elective this semester and would rather save that for later in my studies when workload is more intense and I take on a more serious internship. Thus, will UTS be a confused on why I’m doing an internship? Will it affect anything?

I haven’t told my internship hiring manager I’m a first year and not enrolled in an internship unit 🙃

Overdue tax returns for first time ATO user

19 year old here who has just linked the ATO to myGov after a year of issues with it.

I worked throughout high school and for the 22-23 and 23-24 season, I was definitely under the tax free threshold. However when I graduated high school in the 24-25 season, I’m not sure if I went over the tax free threshold.

With only accessing these now, should i do anything about it? I’m a bit scared to touch anything if it goes wrong. Should I wait till late July to do it with my upcoming one?

I am not with any of the employers of my overdue tax returns btw

Decided to unenroll one of my electives and pick a new one and all the classes are obviously full. What are the chances of waitlist moving through?

There’s only 9 tutorials for this subject. News Now if that’s useful

How soon before sem starts can I go talk to someone. And who/where would that be?🙃

My original elective was Understanding Digital Audiences

Journalism vs PR

Currently in PR and social sciences and wish I picked journalism over PR. Does anyone do both these majors and can compare?

Journalism seems a lot more hands on and techy, and seems to produce more content for a portfolio and PR seems more theory based. I’m not good with tech but so lost on where to start experience.

I also am not feeling very satisfied with PR and I prefer the truth-telling and focus on social issues and humanity journalism does. I would also love to be a music journalist but PR seems a much safer career

Thoughts ?

Experiences with UTS psychology clinic

Need some affordable mental healthcare rn and not sure if I can afford a psychologist even after Medicare rebates with a mental health care plan

Any experiences or reviews on UTS psychology clinic? I have severe anxiety and moderate depression (also Queer)

What are the differences between the student psychologists and licensed psychologists? Assuming they can’t diagnose me or prescribe me anything

I’ve never been to therapy before so unsure what I’m looking for really

Psychologist recommendations for broke uni student on Centrelink Healthcare Card and Mental Healthcare Plan

19F uni student here. Looking to get a GP mental healthcare plan referral for severe anxiety and moderate depression.
I can’t seem to find psychologists to go to after with high enough rebates - I can’t afford to pay more than like $30 a session. I also have a Centrelink Healthcare Card which subsidises more than regular Medicare if that helps. I am also queer FYI

Please no online - looking for upper eastern subs (Bondi) inner city (Darlinghurst, CBD, Ultimo, Glebe) or inner west (Marrickville, Newtown)
Even Bankstown area less convenient but in the area sometimes.

Any Leads? Thanks

hiring a no experience bartender 19 y/o vs 22y/o

Hi,

I'm 19 and just came back from 2 months backpacking Europe last year. I'm currently in first year uni now working a reception job 2 days a week and a pretty decent sum from centrelink youth allowance.

After uni, I'm wanting to take another gap year and explore more of Europe for longer. To save up this money I'll want an RSA job, either at a bottlo or pub because they pay so much better than retail or casual reception roles

However, I'm scared I'll have no luck by the time I'm 22 because I won't be underage labour. I'd get my RSA/RCG and work a bartending job now when I'm sure I'm more likely to be hired but that will stop my youth allowance and burn me out from uni.

Thoughts?

Stupidly Anxious about getting Mode Festival tickets

Can anyone tell me how bad the process was in previous years?

I had a terrible experience getting Skin on Skin tickets for Carriageworks (didn’t receive link in email, had to log onto Bondi lines and get the link off a group chat, got last release..) which has traumatised me from ticket buying.

Its modes biggest lineup to date so I’m assuming I have more competitors this year and I’m getting 7 tickets😭 someone please console me

No idea where to go for these very specific Viet dishes

Hi Sydney foodies

I’ve fallen into a rabbit hole on TikTok of food recommendations in Vietnam. Some of this stuff has been on my mind for days and I need to know where to get it in Sydney. I assume Cabramatta is the best for this, but I’d like specific restaurant names. Ideal if I can have many of these in the same spot.

I’ve had my fair share of Viet in marrickville but I find every menu has the same things.

Apologies if my descriptions are poor, this is just what I’ve found from doomscrolling TikTok. Feel free to drop any other dish recommendations :D not a big fan of any seafood but can eat pork duck and beef for days. Love peanuts onions mushrooms too

Bun Cha
pork meatballs/pork belly slices in salty broth served with rice noodles and herbs

Hiu Tieu Tron
Noodles with pork, crispy onions bean sprouts and peanuts (ideally with wontons on the side)

Bahn Xeo
Crispy pancakes with pork or shrimp with peanut sauce

Bahn Beo
small steamed rice cakes with pork and scallion oil

Also def looking to try Bo Ne (the sizzling steak and egg) and steamed rice paper rolls but I know I can get them at Huong Que Cabramatta ;)

THANKS!!

Not sure if vaginismus or unable to break my hymen

F19. I am a lesbian so this hasn’t been an issue for me up until now as my girlfriend wants to try a strap and my heart wants to but I’m feeling stupidly anxious because I can’t take anything more than 1 finger or a tampon

Many people with vaginismus say it feels like hitting a wall when inserting something and that’s not me. I can get a tampon in just fine and one finger but more than 2 hurts so much at only the opening. Two fingers feels fine further inside me but at the opening it hurts so bad when getting past my hymen.
I don’t know how I haven’t broken my hymen yet and the thought of doing so makes me feel nauseous

2ish month Eastern Europe backpaacking trip

Hi all.

In my gap year I took a 2 month backpacking trip around Europe and absolutely loved it. I went to Greece, Croatia, Italy, France, Netherlands Germany. I found myself to enjoy faster-paced travel (spending 7 days in Sicily made me go insane) and grittier cities like Athens and Berlin. I am thinking of taking another gap year post-uni to visit Eastern Europe.

This is early days for the idea but would love to hear recommendations and hidden gems especially of nature for these places.

Munich: 4ish days to see Eibsee and another daytrip to the alps? Would really only need 1 day in Munich to see people surfing the river and some of the swimming lakes

Berlin: 5ish days. I spent 2 weeks here last trip and fell in love but would really only be here for techno clubs

Through Warsaw to Lviv for 3 days: Not certain but would love to visit Ukraine as my grandma is Ukrainian and Lviv is safer than Kyiv

Chisinau: 3 days including a daytrip to Tiraspol: a 100% must.

Sofia: (or somewhere else in Bulgaria) Not sure? Looks beautiful and would love to go but the least priority out of these places. Any recommendations to make me more keen?

Belgrade: spend about 5ish days to hopefully see a friend and stay with her

Hiking through Albania: is Theth the best place? How many days?

Athens: 3 or 4 days. Stayed near Omonia and still fell in love with Athens and the grittiness of the city. Any other mainland Greece recommendations?

Greek Island: Spent 5 days in Mykonos and that was far too long. 4 days on a different island? I hate getting around islands due to lack of transport so maybe less days in a perfect and accessible accommodation. Set on the Greek islands because the water in Mykonos stays on my mind everyday

Turkey? Not sure, would love to go to Istanbul and maybe the Turkish riviera? But would have to think about logistics harder.

Same with Tbilisi

Let me know thoughts! I love food, soviet art and architecture, swimming/beaches and I am a beginner hiker so easy daytrip trails would be nice or something accessible to tourists.. nothing too off the grid. I don't care about summitting or high views. Happy to look at awesome mountains, lakes and waterfalls from the ground 😄

I picked Understanding Digital Audiences as my communications elective (I do PR+Advertising and Social political sciences) but if I can change to media law and ethics at the start of next sem it means I’m on campus one less day lol

I’ve heard from everyone that’s taken media law and ethics that it is horrible and boring and I think understanding digital audiences might be better knowledge in the future if I’m going into PR/advertising. But that one extra day off campus is really calling my name..

Anyone done either or both and have 2 cents to put in???

group of 19 and 20 y/o Australians looking for 3 weeks in January in SE Asia. We backpacked Europe for 2 months at 18 but aren't the craziest backpackers, we like taking things a bit slow and comfort in budget private accommodation. Not too caring about adrenaline adventures either.

Chiang Mai (maybe?)

See some elephants (ethically) and some rice fields and enjoy the town. Would need little time here

Bangkok (if no Chiang Mai, start here)

We love a city, we love to eat, we love to shop. From travelling Europe, we found our ideal time in a capital city would be 4 days

Islands/beaches? Need some help here!

Koh Tao? Water looks beautiful and you can actually swim here unlike Maya Bay (Phi Phi), I've seen mixed reviews, some love it some hate it. We aren't looking for huge party crowd, but just nice beaches. Would miss the beautiful limestone cliffs

Krabi? Railay Beach has the giant limestone cliffs and heard that if you walk around the beach gets better, but also heard its overrated and the crowds ruin it. Water looks better in Koh Tao but Krabi allows for daytrips. Can also see elephants in Krabi which means I could cut Chiang Mai out

Phuket? Seems to be the same deal as Krabi.

Any other island recommendations for amazing beaches? Wouldn't mind seeing some fire shows or Thai boxing matches

Hanoi

Eat, eat eat, shop and pamper

Cao Bang Loop with easyrider

We aren't adrenaline, crazy adventurers, wanting to be hungover on the back of a bike. Cao Bang Loop seems quieter, flatter with a focus on rice fields and bodies of water compared to Ha Giang. And you see buffalos! It is also a shorter trip, as I'm not sure how long I can stand being on the back of a bike.

Northern Vietnam gets very cold and foggy. It seems to impact Ha Giang more from what I have seen as Ha Giang is more mountain focused, so the flat scenes of Cao Bang seem better for January. But would skipping Cao Bang and going to Laos be better? I have not much knowledge on Laos, but see the same countryside in what appears to be clearer, sunnier weather? I also prefer Viet food over Laos cuisine

Keep in mind none of us feel comfortable riding a motorbike/moped ourselves.

Is there anything I'm missing? Anything to add?
