One of the things I enjoy most about Guangzhou is that you never know what kind of day you're going to have.

A few days ago, a fabric factory owner I met years ago reached out and asked if I could help with translation for a couple of days. Three visitors flying from Australia were coming to Guangzhou to source fabrics and discuss potential business opportunities, and they needed someone to make the communication smooth.

The group consisted of one guy and two girls. One thing I immediately noticed was that they were all quite tall. It made me wonder if Australians are generally taller than average, or if it was just a coincidence!

Over the next two days, we visited the factory, looked at different fabrics, discussed materials, production processes, and specifications. Everything went smoothly, and it was rewarding to see both sides communicating clearly and making progress. The factory owner was happy with how things went, which was nice to hear.

The biggest surprise came at the end of the trip. It turned out that it was the Australian guy's birthday. After work, everyone decided to go out for dinner together to celebrate. It was one of those completely unexpected moments that you could never plan for.

What started as a normal work assignment ended with a birthday dinner surrounded by people from different backgrounds who had only met a couple of days earlier.

Experiences like this are why I enjoy my job. The city attracts people from all over the world, and every interaction comes with a new story, a different perspective, and sometimes a completely unexpected ending.

Just thought I'd share a small positive Guangzhou story.

From the gym to the streets: A last-minute afternoon tour with two Dutch travelers

I had a pretty random but interesting experience today that I wanted to share. I was actually right in the middle of my gym session this morning when I got a message on Reddit. It was a guy from Netherland who had just arrived in Guangzhou with a friend. They were only here for a short time and asked if I could show them around starting at 4:00 PM. Even though it was short notice and only a half-day trip, I figured why not?

We met up in the afternoon, and they were really interested in the history of the city. I decided to take them straight to the Liwang area. If you want to see the traditional soul of Guangzhou, that’s the place to be. We walked through the old neighborhoods to see the classic architecture, stopped by Bruce Lee’s ancestral home, and of course, grabbed some local food along the way.

After seeing the history, we headed over to the Yuexiu area to see the wholesale markets. I explained to them how Guangzhou has been a massive hub for global import and export business since the early 1900s. It’s a huge part of why people from all over the world fly here, and they were definitely impressed by it. They even ended up picking up a few things while we were there.

It was a bit of a whirlwind showing two Dutch guys the highlights of the city in just a few hours, but it was a lot of fun. They mentioned they wished they could have stayed longer to see more, but they had to head out pretty soon after. I’m just glad I could help them make the most of their short stay. It’s always cool to see how a quick message can turn into a successful day of exploring!

A busy day in Guangzhou: Helping a Redditor with car sourcing and company registration

I had a really busy and long day yesterday, but it feels good to get things done. A client from Nigeria reached out to me right here on Reddit because he was coming to Guangzhou for business. He wanted to check out some cars, find an office space, and register his company here.

We met up around 10:00 AM and went straight to the car market. I was honestly impressed by the cars we saw - they looked great and comes with many functions, and the prices were very affordable. We spent some time negotiating with the sellers to see if we could get an even better deal, and we made some good progress there.

After we finished with the cars, we went to look at some offices. We checked out a few different locations with different sizes and layouts. He was pretty happy because a few of them were exactly what he was looking for.

The hardest part of the day was definitely the company registration. There was so much paperwork to deal with, and I had to translate all the documents to make sure everything was correct. It took a long time and was quite tiring, but we finally got it all finished by the end of the day.

It was a long day, but I’m glad I could help him get everything sorted. It’s always a good feeling to have another happy client. And I am curious, what do your guys think about chinese car?

Interesting experience visiting woven bag factories in Guangzhou with two Brazilians

Had an interesting day in Guangzhou with two clients from Brazil who contacted me through Reddit. They came here looking for woven bags to export back to Brazil, so we spent the day visiting several factories known for their quality and creative designs.

We started early in the morning and visited a few different suppliers. We talked about materials, customization options, pricing, and shipping arrangements. One thing that stood out was the quality of the materials - definitely premium level, I even find it nice for someone who is not interested in woven bag...

To be honest, I’m usually not someone who pays much attention to fashion-related products, but even I was impressed by some of the designs and the quality. I can definitely understand why these products are popular.

The clients were happy with what they found and satisfied with the overall experience. Long day, but always good to help people doing business in China. What do your guy think about the woven bags?

A great day helping a Brazilian couple find a clothing factory!

I wanted to share a story from my work this week. I helped a client and his wife who came all the way from Brazil. They wanted to find a good factory for their own clothing brand.

We visited a few different factories together. I helped them talk to the factory owners about:

  • The type of material they can use.
  • The price and how to get a better deal.
  • The MOQ (the minimum number of clothes they need to order).

After 4 hours of meetings, they were very happy! They found a factory that was perfect for their brand.

After the business was finished, I took them shopping. We looked for clothes, watches, and souvenirs for their family. We also went to a tea market to try some local Chinese tea. They really enjoyed the culture here.

It feels great to help people from other countries succeed in Guangzhou.

Does anyone have a favorite tea shop or market they like to show their friends? I would love to hear your recommendations!

With the Canton Fair in full swing, it feels like everyone is 100% focused on business and factory. It can get pretty exhausting! I recently had an American client reach out - he was visiting with his brother and parents - and they asked me if I can be their tour guide and show them the side of Guangzhou that isn't just convention centers and offices.

We decided to spend the day relaxing and exploring. Here is how we spent it:

  • Authentic Dim Sum: You can’t come here and not eat! I took them to my favorite spot for the most authentic experience. I warned them: if you aren't a fan of chicken feet, this might not be for you! But they were great sports about trying the local flavors.
  • Liwan District: We walked through the old Liwan area. It’s so beautiful with the traditional architecture. We stopped by Bruce Lee’s old house, which is a must-see for any fans of history or martial arts.
  • Off-Roading: This was the highlight. It was actually my first time trying it too! We headed out for some off-roading, and it was an absolute blast. The clients loved the adrenaline rush, and honestly, so did I. Highly recommend it if you need a break from the city.
  • Shopping: We wrapped up the day with what Guangzhou does best - shopping. You can find pretty much anything in this city if you know where to look.

It was a great reminder that even during the canton fair business session, it’s important to slow down and enjoy the culture. Another happy group and another great day in GZ!

Has anyone else found some cool "hidden gems" in the city to escape the Fair crowds?

Just wanted to share a quick "day in the life" experience here in GZ.

I recently assisted a client from India who was looking to source cameras and components. Even though I’ve lived here for a while, it was actually my first time stepping inside a high-tech camera manufactory. Honestly, seeing the precision that goes into those parts was pretty mind-blowing!

We spent the day hitting a few different factories. My client had some very specific technical questions, and I’m glad to say my translation held up well - we managed to bridge the gap between his requirements and the factory's capabilities perfectly.

After the "business" side of things was done, we shifted gears to the fun part: shopping. We spent the evening hunting for clothing, suitcases, and souvenirs for his kids. It’s always a reminder of how GZ really is the "factory of the world" for everything from electronics to fashion.

It ended on a high note - he was super happy with the service and already mentioned working together on his next trip. There’s nothing more satisfying than meeting a new person and helping him out!!

Hi everyone,

I'm based here in Guangzhou and moved back a few years ago after studying in the US. Since I've been back, I've spent a lot of time helping visitors bridge the gap between Western expectations and how things actually work on the ground here.

If you’re coming for the Canton Fair or business travel, I know how overwhelming the logistics, supplier meetings, and transport can be. I’m happy to share some local insights, help you avoid the usual pitfalls, or answer any questions you have about getting around GZ.

I’m just a local who knows the area well and understands both perspectives. Feel free to ask anything!
