Would this help you retain words you keep forgetting?

Would this help you retain words you keep forgetting?

Hey folks,

I built Palabros because I kept having the same problem: I would look up a word, understand it, and then forget it again a few weeks or months later.

One example for me was “asertividad” xD I searched it several times before it finally stuck. Not sure why happens with some words but it was a real problem for me.

I wanted something between a dictionary and a vocabulary notebook: quick enough to use when I just need a definition, but useful later when I want to actually remember the word.

So you can look up a word, read definitions, get a clearer explanation and/or example sentence, save it, and revisit it later through review and widgets.

The free version is more than usable and honestly, it already has more than I needed when I was originally looking for an app like this. Pro is available as either a subscription or a one-time purchase for extra features like unlimited saved words, tags, imports, stats, and widget customization.

I’d really appreciate feedback on the core idea:

- Have you had the same problem with looking up words and then forgetting them?

- Would an app like this help you retain new words, or would you rather solve this with notes/flashcards/Anki (If you use Anki, I’d especially love to know whether Palabros’ review modes feel useful enough, too limited, or just different)

- Is “dictionary + lightweight retention” clear enough as a concept?

Thank you so much in advance :)

Launched my app on Uneed today!

Hey folks!

I launched my iOS app, Palabros, on Uneed today.

A — Answer:
Palabros is a dictionary app built to solve one problem: most dictionary apps help you find a word, but not really remember it. I wanted to make something that helps vocabulary stick, not just something you check once and forget.

B — Better:
What makes it different is that it focuses on retention. You can look up a word, understand it quickly, save it, and keep seeing it again through widgets and review tools. It also includes official definitions, simpler explanations, Word of the Day, etymology, tags, stats, and a calm ad-free experience. The goal is simple: not just to define a word, but to help it stay with you.

A lot of what the app is today came from feedback I got on Reddit, especially from this subreddit, so thank you. A lot of your comments genuinely helped improve it.

C — Cost:
The app is free to download and use, with Pro available as a one-time purchase.

I’d love any feedback. And if anyone from this wonderful community it's using Palabros and genuinely thinks it’s a good product, I’d really appreciate your support on Uneed (there’s an important discount there btw). It would really help with the launch.

When you’re reading or listening to a book, do you actually save new words?

I love learning new words, not just in other languages but in my own too, and I kept noticing the same thing: I’d look them up, understand them, and then forget them again a few months later. I swear I looked up words like eclectic or assertive so many times over the years before they finally stuck.

Lately I’ve been trying to save words and revisit them over time instead of treating every lookup like a one-off, and it’s actually working! It’s also helping me stay more focused while reading I think.

I'm sooooo happy about it, it's something small and it doesn't mean anything but this feels nice :_)

Hi folks

I built Palabros, a dictionary app designed to help words actually stick.

I love learning new words, but most dictionary apps felt like one-time lookup tools. They were useful in the moment, but they did not really help me remember vocabulary over time.

I also wanted something that felt calm and beautiful to use, with widgets that could bring saved words back into daily life instead of letting them disappear after a search.

So I built Palabros around a simple idea: not just finding words, but keeping them around long enough to remember them.

It includes definitions, simpler explanations, saving and organizing words, review tools, etymology, Word of the Day, widgets, and some light stats. The whole idea is to make revisiting vocabulary feel natural instead of tedious.

It’s free to download, with a one-time-purchase Pro unlock.

I’d genuinely love feedback from people here, especially on whether the retention/review idea feels useful, which features sound most interesting, and what feels unnecessary or confusing. I’ll be around in the comments.

Hi everyone,

I’m building an iOS vocabulary app and I’m trying to sanity check the pricing. It’s a fairly complete dictionary/vocabulary app: official definitions, saved words, word of the day, AI simplifications, review modes, translations, import, stats, tags, pronunciation, etymology and customizable homescreen widgets that keep saved words visible until they actually stick (this is the core idea).

I’m also clearly trying to differentiate by being an app in this category without a subscription. That was exactly what I personally wanted and couldn’t find. The app is also designed with a lot of care, following Apple/iOS design patterns and the new iOS 26 visual language as closely as possible.

Right now Premium is a “pay what you think is fair” one-time unlock with tiers around $4, $10 and $50. My doubt is whether the $4 entry price makes the app feel cheaper or lower quality than it is. For comparison, similar apps seem to charge much more: LookUp shows $9.99 monthly, $39.99 yearly and $69.99 lifetime; Vocabulary shows around $7.99 weekly, $39.99 yearly and $79.99 lifetime; and Atlas shows $4.99 monthly, $39.99 yearly and $99.99 lifetime.

Would something like $10 / $25 / $50 communicate more value, or would that just hurt conversion by removing the low-friction entry point? For a feature-rich, carefully designed vocabulary app with no subscription, does a low one-time price feel like a strong differentiator or a trust problem?
