I recently found a love for genre-defying classic games

On the NES, we have Air Fortress, a back and forth between a sort shoot ‘em up and a Kirby-Megaman esque platformer

Golgo 13, a side scroller one moment, then it’s a helicopter shoot em up, then you’re in a 3D maze

The Guardian Legend, a shoot em up, with some top down action sort of reminiscent of bomberman

And what may be the pinnacle so far, I found “The Magic School Bus” on Genesis, which provides quite a variety of gameplay. It’s a platformer, space flight sim, moon lander, puzzle game… very engaging.

Do you have any favorite games that that are hard to narrow down to one category?

What stands out to me the most in my memory was how dark and FUTURISTIC the background graphics were.

grandmother sent it to me as a gift, it came on one or more floppy disks for DOS/Windows, but I suspect it was an arcade port.

As I recall, the gameplay took place on the left side, there may have been water or an additional background design on the right.

I don’t remember any curves in the road, or helicopters, or flying over water.

Like many games of the genre, you dodged traffic and collected power ups.

It may have been cars, but it also may have been hovercraft type ships.

Here’s Super Spy Hunter, the closest I can find.
