Sexist and fat-phobic novel

This is Where I Leave You by Jonathan Tropper had been sitting on my bedside table for ages, so I finally chucked it in my work bag as I figured a funny-tragic family drama might make for easy reading on my daily commute. Plus, it had been adapted some years ago into what appeared to be a well-cast crowd pleasing movie (starring Jane Fonda, Jason Bateman and Tina Fey).

Well I’m a third of the way through it and my god the fat-phobic, body-shaming, leering attitude of the main character is breathtaking. I am so angry I’m short of breath. Women reduced to their body parts and basically their attractiveness to the main character. Ick. Not going to finish it, and will probably shred it for storage packaging.

Has anyone else come across this kind of “dick-lit” genre?

Moonah - is pretty good?!

Been enjoying noodling around Moonah. Good big box and speciality stores (Harris Scarfe, Beacon), fantastic food (Plain Jane, the gluten-free place, Saba’s and assorted Thai joints), excellent Asian and MENA groceries, and generally a nice midway point between the Derwent Valley and Hobart CBD. Plus it seems well served by buses. Exploring Moonah has uncovered some pleasant surprises.

Replica coffee table

Not sure if this has been posted already. Couldn’t find any previous references via search. The price on this is eye-watering (thousands) and the date is 2025. Has any talented DIY-er on this sub ever made or attempted a dupe of Frasier’s coffee table? Bought this? Or found a cheaper dupe elsewhere? This looks kinda cheap considering they’re asking thousands for it.

If mods need to delete this because it’s linking to a business and breaks the rules, that’s ok

Murph and the Magic-tones?!?

My sister just texted me where I am vacaying on the other side of the world to share that she just realized Pete the piano player who accompanies Frasier on Buttons and Bows in “Look Before You Leap” is none other than George Murphy “Murph” Dunne from The Blues Brothers. My sister actually saw him live as part of a Blues Brothers Band tour in the 80s. I can hear her squeals of delight from 10,000 miles away

Companion listening - Conspirituality Podcast

I started listening to Conspirituality years ago after they had OBGYN and author Dr Jen Gunther on as a guest. I like their gentle brand of snark, their hippie-ish demeanor, their cerebral dad jokes. There’s an occasional episode featuring Mallory DeMille (a wellness debunker) and Aubrey once guested in an episode. Between them and Maintenance Phase, I feel like I’m getting a good education / deep dive on wellness dipshittery with a sidebar analysis on the connections between wellness and the right wing.

But this latest episode on JD Vance’s memoir re his Catholic conversion feels like we’re straying into If Books Could Kill territory. Awesome

Little Britain - Kelsey Grammar School

For those who remember this sly gem from Little Britain.

The show does not hold up well (seriously some of the jokes are “what were they thinking?”) but this little throwaway gag always made me smile

Lamb tenderloin strips

Hi - I’m struggling to find a butcher who stocks lamb tenderloin fillets / strips just as a matter of business. I either have to explain that I don’t want back-strap or intercostal cuts or have to place a special order. Why is it so hard to find here? If anyone can direct me to a butcher who carries tenderloin fillets without me needing to hand over a secret code that’d be fantastic please and thank you

Housing crisis alleviation - good news story from Vancouver, CA

I hope this link works - it’s gifted from a subscriber. Who’d a thought building denser concentrated housing would alleviate a housing shortage? A great detailed read. Lots to contemplate.

Season 11 Ep 5 The Placeholder -

Ok, the plot hole notwithstanding (isn’t he supposed to be allergic to cats?) and his shoddy behaviour at dinner, I love “cosy” Frasier in this episode. Frankly, he rocks the crochet blanket, the sweater, Mr Bottomley is adorable, and who doesn’t love a guy who makes a delicious winter soup? People’s snark and pity drove him to dinner with the boorish and hideous Anne.

Frasier miming / signaling to the musicians, singers and cherubs to get out of Niles’ apartment as quickly and as silently impossible and then tackling the faux medieval herald to the ground: GOLD
