feeling lost but excited

hello! i'm 27 and just started going back to school to pursue english this year. i'm rly excited to get a bachelors, esp after feeling very lost and unmotivated the past few years.

i honestly don't know what exactly i want to do in terms of a job afterwards. i'm very passionate about writing, but that isn't something i expect to make a career out of. i was wondering what you guys do/plan to do?

i want to get a masters degree eventually as well. i have so many interests. all i know is i don't want to be a teacher. i'm interested in creative writing, linguistics, languages + translation, history, cultural anthropology, archival work, library science etc.

does have advice pertaining to those things or work in any of those fields? i'm curious about what its like and how you got there !!

[Complete] [136k] [Historical litfic] THE UNDERSTUDY

hi! just finished the third draft of my novel and I am looking for some beta readers. IF YOU LIKE TOXIC OBSESSIVE LESBIANS LOOK NO FURTHER !

here is the synopsis:

Serafina Angelo is a brilliant student at an elite music conservatory, tormented by her relentless pursuit of perfection. When her school is given the rare opportunity to perform Bizet’s Carmen at the prestigious Teatro alla Scala, Serafina is certain the lead role will be hers—an opportunity that could launch her operatic career.

Then Antonina Vitale arrives. Timid and somewhat secretive, she possesses a natural talent that threatens everything Serafina has worked so hard for.

When Antonina is cast as Carmen and Serafina as her understudy, Serafina becomes determined to understand what Antonina has that she lacks. But as she gets closer to her rival, she develops a fixation on her that blurs the lines between hatred, envy and crushing affection.

CW: sexual content, some violence, suicidal ideation + interrupted suicide attempt, sexual coercion, self harm, homophobia

mainly looking for moments where i overexplain as i fear i have a chronic habit of doing so, as well as some more specific concerns about character arcs. but i am happy to receive any and all overall feedback/first impressions and whatnot

i am open to manuscript swapping as well!! esp if its lgbt, litfic, etc.

getting back into learning french in uni vs. self-study after several years

hello! i took french for three years in hs and did some self study after. it's been about 7 years since i've studied and recently i've been learning italian.

however, i do miss learning french. and i feel that those 3 years would just go to waste if i never pick it back up. i've lost a lot of it, of course. but i still remember basics + grammar.

i recently started going back to uni as well, and was thinking of taking french. any thoughts? would you recommend that or self study? and does anyone have any advice for learning two languages?

fighting perfectionism when it comes to the first draft

hiii. i'm now writing my third novel and i am really struggling with the first draft. most people say to make it messy and let it just be terrible. i am trying to not edit too much as i go, but i feel that i can't exactly move onto the next section until the current one is at least readable and makes sense for the most part, even if it might change.

genuinely asking -- how do i get over this? how "messy" do you allow your first draft to be? is a super messy first draft just not for me? everyone works differently after all. but my first two novels, i edited a lot as i went along and it slowed me down. my goal is to finish this first draft before august and i'm only 23k words in :')

[WTB] Lilyphea Diptyque (Bottle)

I'd love to buy a partially or even half used bottle at a reasonable price!! I love the fragrance but its super expensive + I have so many perfumes, I can't really justify buying a full bottle

got a partial request on my first ever query

i'm not quite ready to query yet but two agents liked my post from questpit so i decided to just go for it ! one of them requires you to send the first five pages in the initial query package, so i did that and now she requested the partial manuscript

i love this story more than anything, i've never been so passionate about something. but i don't care if this ends in a rejection as she is not someone i was interested in querying to begin with, i'm just taking it as a sign that the story does in fact have merit and it will see the light of day eventually 🙂‍↕️ yayyy

got a partial manuscript request my first time querying

feeling kinda buzzy right now so i thought i would share. i'm not ready to go fully into the query trenches yet, but two agents liked my posts from questpit so i decided to just give it a go and query them. one of them requires you to send the first five pages along with the initial query package and now, less than two weeks later, she wants to read more !!

even if this ends in a rejection, i don't care. i'm taking it as a good sign that the story has merit and it will see the light of day at some point. yayyyy
