Writing group on discord without feedback?

Just what the title says -- does anyone have a writing group that's focused on actual drafting instead of hosting a feedback area?

For context: I find that groups that offer feedback areas often focused on beta reading and critique, than actually having discord writing sessions, etc. I'm not really in the phase of my own writing to ask for feedback on it and would rather focus my attention on creating.

Instead, I'd rather have a community excited about the drafting and brainstorming phase and becoming a community. I also don't want to deal with hurt feelings or one-way streets that feedback-hosting communities struggle with.

Are there any discord communities that explicitly DON'T offer feedback areas? Bonus points for 25+ communities.

I write literary surrealist fiction if it matters.

  • Genre/s: Any, but bonus points for literary
  • Goals/expectations/commitment: Drafting stage
  • Writing/experience level: Any, but bonus points for intermediate+
  • Meeting place: Discord
  • [Writing groups only] Max size: Any, but bonus points for close knit and smaller communities

How do you detach from a story after you finish?

I finished my manuscript and I have an idea for a new story, but I’m having trouble detaching from my characters from the old one. It sounds silly, but they’re so real to me it feels like I’m abandoning them. 🤣
Has this happened to anyone else? If so, how did you deal with it?

Starting A Small Female-Only (~28+) Writing Group✨

Hey! I was looking to form a small writing group of women who are serious about writing and furthering their writing ability. I'm older (early 30s) and I find that there are more groups for younger writers out there, so I'm hoping to fill this space for the "older" women (we're not old but that's what the youths call us 😭;;;) who feel excluded or out of place in most groups these days.

To be honest though, I'm pretty introverted, and not the best leader or instigator of conversation, so hopefully someone can help out. LOL I would like people who will be as active as they can be and are passionate about writing and reading each other’s work! I want to be able to uplift and hype each other up while also giving constructive criticism. I'm very accustomed to critique circles, so I hope for similar-minded people who will bring the same energy.

‼️ hard rule: make sure everybody is involved, everybody is getting feedback at all stages, and everyone is being respected!

Please do comment/send me a DM if you are interested! ✨

Genre/s: any fiction! with that being said, I do want to make it clear that while romance is OK, it's not my strong suit and I'm not super comfortable reading/writing romance. I would be more than happy if someone wanted to lead that section though. I don't want romance to be excluded here

Goals/expectations/commitment: Not expecting you to be online 24/7 (especially starting out since it will be a super small group!) but want people who will be able to be consistent and semi-active in the space and just see where it goes!

Writing/experience level: anyone truly willing to put in the work improving writing skill and connecting with others

Meeting place: Discord! Hoping for fortnightly checkups to see progress in writing goals

Max size: ~10 or so active members to start

Where I'm at with my projects currently: two projects in the brainstorming stage (YA political fantasy fiction & YA magical school fantasy fiction) with some written scenes. I haven't written creatively for several years after graduating with a Creative Writing BA ;-; I got so burnt out but I want to get back in to it and meet others who are starting out too!

Looking to start a fantasy writing group! If you are writing with LGBTQ+ too themes even better

Hiya, I’m honestly quite new to this whole.. writing group and critique partners idea, least anymore than a few messages with my friends. I’m hopeful to have anyone to chat to an explain my ideas. Especially if you are writing female protagonists or any part of lesbian romance along the way (I’m a lesbian myself and a sucker for any media of that sort)

* Genre/s: Fantasy of any kind
I’m currently trying to write something high fantasy myself and looking to chat with people doing things similar or different to myself.

* Goals/expectations/commitment: I’m hopeful to least do weekly check ins but more often and getting to talk through our stories as we write them feels like it would be good.

* Writing/experience level: I am intermediate at best but I’m actively improving, I think, this is my second attempt at a big project and well.. I’ve never taken a creative writing class but I’ve been writing smaller things on and off for years.

* Meeting place: Discord, I will make a server

* Max size: 3-5

I am sorry for my awful formatting and explanation here, I’m bad at making posts like this.

looking to create (or join) a speculative fiction group

hello! I've unfortunately had to leave my old writing group because of schedules no longer lining up and would love to create (or join!) a new one. I'm looking for tolerant, left-wing people with a good sense of humor (and are 18+ years old). Would love to connect!

* Genre/s: Fantasy, Sci Fi, Speculative Fiction

* Goals/expectations/commitment: Mutual Feedback/Brainstorm/etc/Casual; Mainly looking for a space to make writer friends in and have discussion bloom naturally rather than having set times for it

* Writing/experience level: Intermediate; Generally open to anyone, beginners or experts, but I'd like some general degree of personal investment in the craft, if that makes sense?

* Meeting place: Discord

* Max size: 5/6

Hi Everyone!

Hi everyone I'm a first time writer working in the fantasy genre, I'm young for a writer but I won't put my age. I just wanted to say hi to the community. My book is pretty much a cross of Narnia, Redwall, and Lord of the Rings. I'm not going to put the name either until it's published just incase it gets stolen, I don't know if that's likely, again I'm new. Anyways I'll be making more posts soon I did have one question though, what are some things that help you stay focused on writing, for example: listening to music, or maybe a white noise, I'd really like to know it could help a young writer like myself.

Looking for a writing partner!

Hello, I am 20F with the beginnings of a literary fantasy/romantasy novel (along with some more purely literary short fiction that i would love talking about as well). I'm looking for a writing partner with whom I can exchange ideas and whose work I would absolutely love to read and give thoughtful critique to.

Genres:

any, preference for fantasy

( i personally write fantasy + literary/realistic fiction, & in terms of genres i like: i try & do read some classics, but i've been loved fantasy/ speculative fiction in general since i was very young & have also been very open to webnovels since i read my first one in my teenage years)

Goals/expectations/commitment:

regular communication, discussing our ideas, general discussion of books or our thoughts if possible, setting writing goals (for example writing for a set amount of time every day or the xx chapter completed by next week) to hold each other accountable to & maybe setting aside time to read each other's work every week (only if the other person is comfortable with that)

Writing/experience level:

any experience level would be great!

I would consider myself 'intermediate' in terms of pure creative writing, and I published some literary short fiction in a few youth journals when i was younger, but I'm open to people of all levels & would work with somebody just starting with writing as well as more experienced writers.

How to be a good writer

I’ve always hated timed writes, I often find myself in a position where I’m “stuck” and are not able to fluently write down my ideas, and I find shame in myself that I cheated using @I

But I am going to be a rising senior and need to start and draft supplement essays and a common app.I really want to use my own voice, and try to find my own style of writing.

I have great ideas, but I lack the skills to condense all those ideas into fluent writing, and how to represent them for clarity.

Since my school starts in August so one month from now, I truly believe that with consistency daily , i can improve and find my own voice. In 5-6 months submitting my college essays/applications

What would your ideal online library collection look like?

If you could magic a library or online archive into existence, where all the work of tracking down texts from various different libraries and hard-to-find corners of the internet was done for you, what would the collection look like? And what would it be called?

I've helped digitize a fair few texts that were hidden away in physical libraries, and turned a lot of badly photo scanned books into nice to read books with hyperlinked chapters and footnotes, etc.

I've also been trying to help find a web developer up for building some cool online archives and a classic forum board for people to talk about them. So, I know this is a long shot, but if you have those skills and would like to be involved let me know e.g. the text linked below lists a bunch of already digitized texts that could be split off to start off some new archives:

Finally, are there any cool existing libraries that come close to your dream library? I'll quote a few that I know of below.

---

Joseph A. Labadie Collection

One of the oldest, largest, and most comprehensive collections of its kind, with materials on anarchism, anti-colonialist movements, anti-war and pacifist movements, atheism and free thought, civil liberties and civil rights, ecology, labor and workers’ rights, feminism, LGBTQ movements, prisons and prisoners, the New Left, the Spanish Civil War, and youth and student protest.

The collection includes books, pamphlets, periodicals, and more, and is noteworthy for its printed ephemera and holdings of posters, photographs, sheet music, pinback buttons, and scrapbooks. It also includes important archival and manuscript material, as well as recordings of speeches, debates, oral histories, and protest songs.

New material is added regularly through both purchase and donation, with the goal of filling gaps in the historical record, building on existing areas of strength, and meeting the current and emerging needs of researchers, instructors, activists, and others who use the Labadie Collection in the Special Collections Research Center

The Labadie Collection is named for Detroit labor organizer and anarchist Jo Labadie, who donated his personal library of books, pamphlets, newspapers, magazines, and memorabilia to the university in 1911. In 2000, we received a large donation of research materials from the National Transgender Library and Archives, adding to our already strong holdings.

---

May Day Rooms

Our archive focuses on social struggles, radical art, and acts of resistance from the 1960s to the present: it contains everything from recent feminist poetry to 1990s techno paraphernalia, from situationist magazines to histories of riots and industrial transformations, from 1970s educational experiments to prison writing.

We proceed from the understanding that social change can happen most effectively when marginalised and oppressed groups can get to know – and tell – their own histories “from below.” Our archival collections challenge the widespread assault on collective memory and the tradition of the oppressed. We aim to counter narratives of historical inevitability and political pessimism with living proof that that many struggles continue.

We run a public programme including archival projects, publications, film screenings, “scan-a-thons” for digitising archival material, workshops, talks and discussion, reading groups, and social nights, all of which encourage active and collective engagement with history of social movements.

---

Feminist Library

The Feminist Library is a large collection of feminist literature based in London. We are a library and community space and support research, activist and community projects.

In 2020 The Feminist Library celebrated 45 years of archiving and activism. Mainly volunteer run, we have created and looked after one of the most important collections of feminist material in the UK, and provided an inspiring learning and social space for thousands of people.

---

The Anarchist Library

theanarchistlibrary.org is (despite its name) an archive focusing on anarchism and anarchist texts.

Within the scope of our use of the term “anarchism” we have been quite broad, but broad does not mean infinite, and basically shrinks down to a set of ideas against the State and capital. This immediately rules out the so-called “anarcho-capitalism”, “anarcho-nationalism” and similar crap.

What is so special about this site?

The library provides a high quality online web browser version of the text along with various other formats, like PDFs, plain text, HTML, EPUB, and XeLaTeX. We actively encourage the DIY printing and the distribution of the texts, so there is no need to ask us for permission to use the texts.

The site provides a way for distributors and friends to change the layout of the PDFs and to create collections of an arbitrary number of texts (1 or more). See the bookbuilder page.

The site also provides an advanced search engine.

All these features come with some responsibility for the people who want to contribute to the library. We ask that uploaders contribute a logical representation of the text, with headings, emphasis, quotation blocks, etc. marked up appropriately. The site provides some tools (inside the web interface) to make this process easy, but some attention and some care is still required. Please be sure to read the manual if you plan to join the project for the mid- to long-term.

---

Sprout Distro

Sprout Distro is an anarchist zine distro (distributor) and publisher based in the occupied territory currently known as the United States.

We distribute zines (see: "What is a Zine?" if you are new to zines) as a way of contributing to the increased proliferation of anarchist projects and resistance. We primarily distribute zines via this website and in person at zine fests, book fairs, and other such events. We make all the zines we carry available as PDFs for folks to download, print, and distribute themselves.

About Our Distro

Our distro mainly focuses on anarchist tactics and skill-building. This means that we have a lot of zines on direct actionorganizing, starting projects (ex: collectivesstudy groupsprisoner support projects), decision-makingstreet tacticssecurity, affinity groups, how we relate to each other, etc.

Get In Touch

We welcome feedback from folks, suggestions of zines to carry, new ways to distribute zines, and other projects we should know about. Contact us here.

---

Steal This Wiki

A collaborative update and rewrite of Abbie Hoffman's seminal work, Steal This Book. Plus, a collection of related books and essays e.g. books analysing this project's yippie anarchist roots.

---

The Library of Unconventional Lives

An archive for collecting together stories of lives lived in unconventional ways. Which could mean something as simple as what it’s like to live on a narrow boat. Or it could mean someone hitchhiking around the world because it was the only way they knew how to process a tough childhood with their sanity intact.

Call for Submissions

Organization: Harbour Works
Deadline: November 30
Entry fee: None
Prize/s: None
Link to submission page/official rules:
https://www.harbourworks.org
Other information:

About:
Harbour Works is a Canadian literary magazine — and we are building it to a standard that does not exist yet in student publishing. We are not a course project. We are not a club newsletter. We are working, deliberately and seriously, toward becoming a fully peer-reviewed journal: the most rigorous, most prestigious student-run literary publication in the country.

Every submission enters a multi-stage blind review process. A minimum of three editors read each piece independently before any discussion begins. Decisions are made by argument and consensus, not by majority vote. Work is accepted because it earns it — not because there are pages to fill.

We publish fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, visual art, photography, and hybrid work. We are drawn to writing that takes risks — formally, politically, emotionally — and to writers who understand the page is not a safe place.
We are open to high school and university students worldwide. We believe the most vital creative work is happening in student hands right now — not after graduation, not once someone decides it's ready. The only question we ask of a piece is whether it is alive.

Submissions Guidelines:
Fiction — Up to 7,000 words. Short fiction and flash welcome. We read all lengths with equal care.
Poetry — Up to 5 poems per submission. No minimum length. Sequences welcome.
Creative Non-fiction — Up to 6,000 words. Essays, memoir, lyric essays, hybrid nonfiction.
Visual Art — Up to 8 images. Minimum 300 DPI. JPEG, PNG, or PDF. Include a brief artist's statement.
Photography — Up to 10 images. Series preferred. Minimum 300 DPI. Captions welcome.
Hybrid / Experimental — No formal constraints. If it resists categorisation, it may belong here.

Join the Team:
Harbour Works is entirely volunteer-run. We are not looking for resumes. We are looking for people who care about writing — who have strong opinions about what they read, who take the page seriously, and who want to be part of making something that matters.

We are open to high school and university students at all stages. If you have never worked on a magazine before, that is not a disadvantage. If you have, bring what you know. The only requirement is that you show up and take the work seriously.

All positions are open. We are building the editorial board from scratch, and every role is a founding role. That means the decisions you make will shape what this magazine becomes.

For additional information, feel free to visit our website, where you will be able to submit your work or apply to join our team.

Looking for a partner for mutual accountability and shared feedback and growth!

Hey there! I'm searching to find a partner to share in all the misery joys of being a writer. I'm hoping to find a writing friend for all the stuff we do and need as writers. Accountability and support, sharing of ideas, feedback, lamenting The Process, etc.!

Genre/s: I read and write predominately speculative fiction, but am open to writers of any genre!

Goals/expectations/commitment: I don't ask for anything excessive. No need for rigid feedback schedules or anything like that. I would be happy to have someone just to chat with about what we're working on and share ideas with. It would be great if we could share our work with each other (I find a consistent feedback partner is great for continuous context and to hone our ability to edit our own work!), but it doesn't need to be a regular or strict thing. Art can be lonely, after all!

Writing/experience level: If you're familiar enough with writing to talk about it, then you're experienced enough for me!

Looking for Writing buddy/buddies (Romantasy, Dark Thrillers, Sci-Fi)

Hi! I'm 21F looking for a writing partner or partners to help keep me accountable, brainstorm, and cheer each other on. I'm pretty new to writing, but I have a couple of book ideas I want to write and am currently working on world-building and character building. I'm a bit shy to share my writing at first, but I'd love a partner I can comfortably share ideas with, talk character arcs, and critique or exchange advice once we get to know each other a bit.

Genre(s): Dark Romantasy (including Omegaverse and Reverse Harem/Why-Choose), Dark Psychological Thrillers, High-Concept Sci-Fi/Cosmic Horror, and Historical Military LGBTQ+ Romance.

Goals/expectations/commitment: Regular communication, sharing goals, discussing ideas, and cheering each other on. Would prefer an open communication style (we message each other and the other person responds when they can) rather than set times to meet but open to both!

Writer experience/level: Anyone! Whether you are completely new just starting your journey or an experienced writer who doesn't mind helping someone learn the ropes, I'd love to connect. As long as you love deep world-building and character dynamics, we'll get along great.

Max size: 3 to 5 people only (wanting to keep it a small, cozy group)

Disappointed to be Banned from a Discord

I was having a great time, this server appeared to be one that I was looking for. After a bit of banter and brainstorming, I submitted my work for feedback.

I was then brainstorming with a new friend on his thread. A mod suddenly blocked me out of nowhere, saying that he believes all of my conversation, my critique, my questions, and my work were generated by an LLM.

Well, good sir, I believe that you are lacking, both as a mod and as a reader. LLMs did not come up with probing questions or brainstorming; humans did, and LLMs learned from the existing "model". I talked this way since college.

Quite a disappointment. Other than that one idiot, everyone else was so pleasant. This fear and accusations about AI usage push too many knee-jerk reactions forward.

Commitment issued with story ideas?

Hi

I have been trying to find some thoughts on this topic but have not managed to find any results...

I have an idea for a story but then I am influenced by something and bam another idea... I cant commit. I dont feel like then starting the first idea and it rots away.

How does one deal with it? Is this writing block?

At this rate I feel like just making a scrap book out of my ideas I never touch on because something else worms its way into my head....

Anyone have advise? a cure?
