Anyone else put on space game soundtracks while working?

Anyone else put on space game soundtracks while working?

Generally, I’m looking for something otherworldly without it being too distracting. These are my three favourites to have on while I'm working on creating my own game, and they all take me back to the era when I first played them:

Homeworld

I-War 2

There are loads of other nostalgic game sound tracks that I love, but many of them are too action-orientated. For example, Freelancer and Hardwar have good soundtracks, but I don’t find them conducive to coding and using my imagination. There are also loads of other great sound tracks from non-space games such as Deus Ex and Fallout series and Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura that I like to put on as well.

Underwater basebuilding in an underwater sim

Subciety, my forthcoming indie sci-fi submarine game, features base-building. I think I’ve got a fairly unique mechanic - where you scavenge the buildings themselves and drag them into place rather than buying / building them. I personally can’t think of other games that do that, but I bet there are examples as I’m something of an old-school gamer.

I've always been a fan of cross-genre, and I think there's something in the air now with other people enjoying, say, a FPS that features some strategy features as well.

As much as possible, I want the game to have a living economy where every person consumes 1 unit of food, water and oxygen per game-day. Every game hour each attached building generates a resource such as food or software programs. The commodities you produce can be traded with the other bases that are competing to take over the map.

This is a time-lapse I created of NPC subs building up a base. Let me know what you think.

Glad I added NPC subs early in development

This is something I got right: I'm glad I added non-player submarines to my submarine game early in the dev process. The NPCs are effectively play testing the game for free. Quite often, I leave the game running while I'm away for the computer, and if I come back to a crash (or something's stuck), it's all for the good. https://store.steampowered.com/app/4478820/Subciety/?beta=0

This is the low poly open world submarine sim I’ve been working on since December. The main influences are Elite-style space sims like Elite itself, Frontier Hardwar, X:BTF and I-War 2. There’s some base building and strategy going on as well.

Here, I’m demonstrating the ore mining mechanic. Basically, you build a drill rig and then tow it into position. Then, you can transport the ore using the sub or by programming drones to do it. Metal ore is a requirement to manufacture some upgrades, buildings and craft.

It has a Steam page if you’d like to wishlist (helps the algorithm): https://store.steampowered.com/app/4478820/Subciety/?beta=0
