Vespa: price, reliability, quality, or just style?
Well, it’s finally time for my Vespa’s maintenance, and while it’s sitting on the lift, I couldn’t help wondering: is it really as good as it is popular?
I bought mine purely because of the design — and honestly, the design is amazing. I think that part is pretty obvious 😄 Before the Vespa, I had Japanese scooters, and after about a month of ownership, once the initial excitement wore off, I started noticing some downsides. Here’s my top five:
Mine is a 2022 model, and pretty much every Japanese scooter from those years already has keyless ignition. Meanwhile, Vespa says hello from the ’90s with a regular key.
The storage under the seat is really small. Even an average-sized laptop doesn’t fit, and neither does a full-face helmet. That’s actually pretty inconvenient.
There’s no separate frame — the steel body itself is the load-bearing structure. That wouldn’t bother me, but some of the plastic parts that touch the metal tend to squeak and creak. It’s especially noticeable around the seat and the glovebox/leg-shield compartment.
The rubber grips are slightly thicker than what I’m used to on most motorcycles and scooters. I have small hands, so reaching and comfortably using the brake levers is honestly not that convenient.
And finally, maintenance and spare parts. Everything seems to cost almost exactly twice as much as comparable Japanese scooters.
At the time of writing, it has around 5,000 km on the odometer. When we bought it, we suspected the mileage might have been rolled back a little, but I doubt the real mileage is more than 10,000 km.
I’d really like to hear from other Vespa owners. What has your experience been like?
Maybe I just got unlucky with mine?
