Amiga CEO Mike Battilana discusses open source plans for Amiga OS

On the Amiga Bill podcast at the 1:06 minute mark the CEO of Amiga discussed plans to open source Amiga OS.

https://youtu.be/lp-NAajrc5Q?si=ccdy3SE5tFtkWdfi

The takeaway concerns were whether a dual license would be acceptable to the community and devs that would allow Amiga, Inc to retain commercial hardware licensing and disallowing forks.

Last year I brought the idea up of a kickstarter campaign to buy the rights outright but if Mike is headed this way maybe we don’t need to do that.

The largest issue of course is the timeline as we are all getting older and movement is necessary.

Whether we believe that classic Amiga OS has any modern value in its code is largely irrelevant. An open source model could take contributions from Aros and MorphOS but thats not what would be most relevant either.

Open sourcing Amiga could potentially create a modern OS from the ashes of the old because Amiga is an idea and ideas are what matter. The idea of a new open source OS with contributions from a large and dedicated community of former users who care so much could create a synergy we haven’t seen before in the tech community.

This isn’t like OS/2 or BeOS being brought back, its the frickin Amiga!

Without getting hung up on the technical aspects of the OS and whether it should use the Linux kernal or not, the question I have is whether the conditions of a no-branch with Amiga Inc retaining commercial licensing is acceptable.

Kul or Natural Choice ION CO2 Regulator Replacement

I bought a used Kul Spark which appears to be the same as the Natural Choice ION.

It works great except for one problem with the CO2 regulator. Shortly after putting in a new CO2 cylinder it will hiss as CO2 escapes regardless of how tight I make it.

I think the previous owner probably overtightened it and maybe that piece needs to be replaced.

Does that sound right? Any suggestions?

Will Kul sell me a replacement CO2 regulator or can I buy one from a Natural Choice dealer or service person?

My former boss crossed county lines to give my iPad to their attorney, is this an additional crime?

My former boss stole my iPad to try to get my cloud notes off of it after I quit for non-payment and the police are prosecuting it as a misdemeanor but after stealing it they crossed county lines to give it to their civil defense attorney who did not give it back to me.

What additional crimes did they commit?

Which crimes did their attorney commit?

Was an additional computer crime committed by trying to get my work data off of it?

The iPad and other items are valued at $1500.

Commodore Tablet Announcement

With the success of the Commodore Callback, Commodore today announced its next product, the Commodore Tablet!

When asked about the direction of the company, CEO Christian Simpson declared, “They said retro and nostalgia couldn’t be the defining characteristics for a successful computer company. Well, we are doubling down on retro, all the way back to Mount Sinai.”

“The Commodore Tablet has no touchscreen, and technology that permanently blocks social media, web browsers, and email apps, at the molecular level. You can't override it.”

”For those that didn’t see it coming, my real first name is Christian”, said the man known to his followers as Perifractic.

Amazon Shop With Points | Better to link cards right away or wait?

Is it better to link all my cards to Amazon to get the 40% offers to use card reward points or to wait for Amazon to offer a credit for adding a new type of card?

Commodore Callback vs Nokia comeback

I previously posted about the direction I felt Commodore was taking by focusing on a mobile phone with less user utility rather than finding innovative ways to free the user.

In this post I want to point to Nokia, a Finnish company that lost it all and the incredible 5 year returns it has had.

The Commodore brand, like Nokia has nostalgic value and captures retro vibe far more than Nokia could.

There are many great ideas that are bubbling up that Commodore could use to make itself relevant again.

If mobile is going to be the play then it should be competing with a combination of modern hardware, nostalgia, brand and novel ideas that free the user.

Rather than focus on just the Callback, please tell me why Commodore can’t do what Nokia has?

Both are using Android, both are outsourcing their manufacturing, both are nostalgia brands, both are a small group of people who had good ideas and were able to get the rights to a retro brand.

One of them is led by a former Star Wars actor who has an influential social media following and a Steve Jobs esque reality distortion field.

I would say Commodore should have the advantage!

Commodore Callback Phone is the wrong way forward

Recently the new Commodore released the Commodore Callback phone.

https://commodore.net/callback/

The pitch is of course nostalgia which was fine for the Commodore 64 remake. What is not ok is rebuilding the brand around continuously going back to the well.

Lots of brands come back from the dead with a plan to grow their business through innovation and new products.

Some might say that some version of Commodore tried to sell a modern phone or even business computers but no one wanted them.

No one wanted them because they were half baked.

Nokia and Blackberry are both trying to come back. is it easy? No. Do they have a better chance with a brand name that has nostalgic goodwill? Yes.

I would love to have a Commodore phone that competes with the Asian brands. Its not hard to outsource the hardware and then Commodore could focus on the software.

A side benefit would be to have a folder that contained BBS software, maybe Quantumlink, a C64 emulator with a dozen games and other fun nostalgia but not make the entire experience about nostalgia.

How incredibly cool would it be to pull out my usable Commodore phone at a meeting and use it like any other phone? How dumb is it to pull out a toy phone?

The difference is stark and bleak for the Callback phone.

or go another direction and make a phone that has game controls and the aforementioned c64 and also Amiga software. Let me play Giana sisters, Karateka, Zork, Kings Quest, Elite, Wings, Lemmings and Defender of the Crown in between business meetings.

The retro community is dying for a Commodore phone and the markup or a branded Commodore phone of $100 would be fine.

Then resell mobile service and you’ve got a real business. Mint had Ryan Reynolds, Commodore has our hearts.
