Mao was too lenient on landlords

Discuss.

PS. Why does every post get downvoted on here? Don’t landlords have better things to do with their time? Sure there’s single mothers to evict.

Actually building a community

Sign of the times this keeps popping up, think we all sense it’s the best of a bad option. I’m not offering (yet anyway) but just curious what the level of interest would be here. Obviously the hypothetical would be enough land, enough space between the houses, equal decision making, ball breaking hard work for all etc

Newish texts with a bit of buzz

I don’t keep up with things any more but dip into interesting stuff when it pops up now and then, Desert, N1x, Invisible Committee, things like that. Anything relatively recent that’s well written and worth a look?

Franz Kafka’s The Trial

Pages 116-117 “For example, there is a dear friend of mine visiting me at this very moment‘ and he waved a hand towards a dark corner of the room. ‘Where?’ asked K., almost roughly, in his first shock of astonishment. He looked round uncertainly; the light of the small candle did not nearly reach the opposite side of the wall. And then some form or other in the dark corner actually began to stir. By the light of the candle, which his uncle now held high above his head, K. could see an enderly gentleman sitting there at a little table. He must have been sitting without even drawing breath, to have remained so long unnoticed. Now he got up ceremoniously, obviously displeased to have his presence made known. With his hands, which he flapped like short wings, he seemed to be depreciating all introductions or greetings, trying to show the last thing he desired was to disturb the other gentlemen, and that he only wanted to be translated again to the darkness where his presence might be forgotten. But that privilege could no longer be his.”

”K. could observe everything calmly, for nobody paid attention to him.”

Total paranoid-schizoid fever dream. Calmly, coolly, and indifferent are adjectives that are used frequently. I read this just once many years ago and it’s always had some hold on me. A rereading is making me understand why.

Chopwell

Read through the last thread about here. People said don’t go and especially to a river street. But I’m stupid. Looking for a quiet rural gaff nearish to Newcastle and it seems nice enough. I’m not from the NE though, is this a poundland western film waiting to happen?

Communes

I’ve been realising how much of the schizoid ideal relies on the fragile interconnectedness of peacetime, waged labour, supply chains, and affordable goods/food/oil, all of which are luxuries in some parts of the world and precarious in others. The future will have to be collective in some form and obviously life is easier with a network and shared resources. As much as I enjoy the fantasy of hermitage and self sufficiency, that’s not realistic for a lot of us. So what would tolerable?
