one side makes sense where the hardware inserts into a strap hole. but on the other side there still is the "pin" piece of the hardware but nowhere to go so it just kinda flaps around . what am I missing about th design here ?

I bought this 2011 purse today and it's an totally pristine condition. looking at other bags just like this one that sell online it seems that the finish cracks and peels off fairly consistently in all of these bags over time. Is my bag destined to look just as bad? And I'm going to be left with shredded material all over my closet and my hands at some point? or is there anything that can be done preventatively?.
today I picked up this purse from an estate sale, unused condition, three hangtags, detachable crossbody strap, original receipt inside. I've seen pics online of this strap wearing terribly. is there something that can be done to prevent such deterioration? first pic is my bag , second is a photo from online listing.
