Wheel Advice

This weekend I’ll be installing lowering springs on a VA base model WRX. So I’m still rolling on the hideous stock rims, but it is what it is.

The springs will be H&R Sport - 1.2” drop front and rear.

I’m not a fan of spacers, so I’m on the lookout for different wheels.

I really want a nice flush fitment, nothing crazy aggressive though. I’ve been looking at marketplace and can get a full set of the 19” STI rims, or the 18” premium or limited options all for < $600. But - will using OEM rims - even bigger ones - still have me sitting inside the fender flares?

Truthfully I’m not offended by 17” as a wheel size but would consider 18” too. I think 17” might actually help keep the ride less harsh while keeping tires cheaper too.

Wonder if anybody has recommended width and offset specs in 17 and 18 inches for a VA model WRX?

NEVER AGAIN

I got a good deal on a torque solution short shifter - and had planned to install it this coming weekend. Well turns out I have to travel this weekend, and I thought I’ll just do it.

What was supposed to be 2 hours turned into closer to 15. Somehow the bolts in the picture were overtorqued from factory and the rounded square bolts on the other side ended up just camming out. After many hours trying different things I gave up and went to bed with a furious wife who wasn’t thrilled that the car was out of action.

Pressure was on the next day, and after getting nowhere with PB blaster, I went the nuclear route and cut off the nuts with a dremel. Because I had to be at least somewhat careful this took quite some time. Coupled with the fact I was in a stupid hot garage, sitting on the floor, it was the least enjoyable mod I’ve ever done.

On the plus side, when I did eventually get it done - holy shit what a difference! Added a grimmspeed weighted knob too. Night and day.

It’s done more for the car than any of my other mods in terms of driving feel which I love - but I’ll forever resent what it took to make it happen.

Anybody ever order from subieautoparts.com?

There’s a trim piece I’m looking for - and they have it at a good price. It’s not a too good to be true deal, but still a fair bit cheaper than anywhere else I’ve seen it.

Tempted to order it on the credit card so I at least have a bit of protection, but wondered if anybody here had used them before I do?

Bargain TMIC

If anybody is looking for a TMIC upgrade - these Turbo XS units are (if I’m not mistaken) identical to the Grimmspeed unit, and are basically a giveaway at this price. Found it directly on the TurboXS website.

Paint matching fog bezels

Had ChatGPT mock up what paint matched bezels would look like on a red VA. IDK if I love it or hate it. Any thoughts?

I paid $9 for an N70 body - already had modern Nikon glass from my digital collection. Honestly - I’m never getting rid of it. Say what you like about the “fan” display. It’s more intuitive than people give it credit for, and I’m basically using it like a massive point and shoot anyway. Just effortless! Had considered upgrading to an F4, but there’s genuinely no need!
