Street find CRT update. Running retroarch XP build on my Thinkpad t41

Turns out retroarch maintains a XP build.

I was having issues on my newer Thinkpad T420 so switched to this T41 with a ATI 9000. Now it's working great!

Super pleased how the games are looking, and I've ordered DVI adapter I need to use this with a more powerful pc with a graphics card. I'm also gonna pick up a xbox 360 vga cable soon too as I've been enjoying playing black ops on my larger crt tv.

Also that Thinkpad IBM boot screen to magnificent.

Found this on my way home last night! Packard bell a727

This is my first crt monitor. It’s 17 inch, has a wired male VGA cable as the only input which is a bit annoying.

It’s really sharp compared to my only other crt, a 21 inch Phillips tv.

I’m running off my thinkpad t420 on windows 11. I can only get it running in 800x600 atm. But it’s capable of going higher.

Going to see if I can hook up some kind of console to it now!

Are Android based handhelds quite annoying? Vs Linux based

I'm in the market for a gameboy style handheld. Mainly to play through games like Pokemon unbound (haven't played a Pokemon in 15 years).

I'm really drawn to the Retroid Pocket Classic because of its huge OLED screen and also think the 1:1 ratio looks cool. The RG Rotate also looks pretty cool. Both of these are physically close to ideal for me.

But these are both android based. And that doesn't feel very appliance-like, like an offline gameboy experience. Having to open an app draw into an emulator. Getting updates on the play store.

Vs something like a TrimUI Brick running nextUI. Which I'm pretty sure has instant resume into games, boots straight up into a proper frontend.

If anyones got experience with both types of systems id love to hear what you think about it's playability and user experience.

I'm leaning more towards the TrimUI brick for now. It's cheaper and seems really nicely made. And nextUI looks quite mature in development now.

My experience with Cod games on 360 today

Just finished setting up my crt gaming setup and wanted to test out some call of duty. Also since the Playstation ports of bo1 and bo2 I've been wanted to play again.

Black ops 1 is online is totally playable. Fast game matching, didn't get any weird hacked lobbies. And pretty normal spectrum of players. I'm not great at cod but even got in some kills.

Black ops 2 online had zero games. Absolute zero.

Modern warfare 2 has one active team deathmatch game hacked to oblivion. Bot players running around in circles. And once I left the lobby my rank jumped to 70 from 1. Not playable.

Would love to see the devs push an update to fix these games since they dropped the ports on playstation. Quite unlikely though

Update on my diy tv stand. This is v2

This is v2 of the diy tv stand I posted yesterday.

First some quick updates:

  • Many of you questioned my prototypes structural integrity. I'm glad to report it survived the night. I even stood on it before taking it off today and it held up to my surprise. One comment suggested it could even kill a nearby child, but you can relax as I dont have any yet.
  • this new version is all decent plywood and feels very strong indeed
  • I've christened it videomaster. I wanted it to sound like something you might find in the 90s electronics scene.
  • a secondary shelf is coming soon. I will probably use to put controllers on
  • for the next version I'd like to work out some near cable storage

On the surface this still looks quite unstable. But I'm happy with the stability. It takes a lot of force to start tipping it over forwards or backwards. All the weight in these crts are in narrow plane near the screen. The tv's ass still hands way off the back but it's okay.

Thanks again for all your comments. It's been lots of fun.

Made this on my home CNC today (just a prototype). Inspo pic 2

I noticed this Phillips crt I have has something of a vesa mount on the base. Four M6 threaded inserts in a 195x150mm spacing.

Then I came across that Sony profeel stand and made something similar today.

First impressions:

  • loving the dimensions and vibe
  • Pic 4 shows how crazy the back overhang looks. But its very front heavy and quite stable to my surprise (I am scared)
  • I used scrap OSB which sucks. I'll switch to birch once I'm happy on a design. OSB did split when screwing it together
  • will probably add a few more shelves for future consoles
  • obvs needs wheels

I will be using this temporary version will no doubt far longer than I should. I hope it stands the test of time.

Got this T41 for £5! Xp is slow, but has 1400x1050 LCD.

picked this up at my local car boot sale

  • 256mb ram
  • 30gb hdd
  • ati 9000 (better one)
  • Amazing 1400x1050 screen

lots of fun playing with this. the usbs didn’t work at first. so I setup a http server on my Mac to download xp sp3.

ive installed VLC and played an episode of the last air bender to test oit watching the 4:3 content.

i wish i could buy a modern laptop with a 4:3 ratio lcd. it’s so tall and looks amazing. I may upgrade the hdd and ram and install antix Linux.

Found this today, is it dead or just no remote?

Took this plasma home today, but getting no image.

it’s drawing power and clicks on when I push in the power button.

i get a green flashing light and turns solid green. but no image.

its not no buttons so I can’t tell if I’m just turning it into standby mode, or it’s powering up but a dead screen.

if anyone’s familiar and knows something I’d appreciate any advice!
