After more than a year of no contact, where's Suwayda from Damascus today ? /

Zain Ma’rouf _ As-Suwayda 25

The official communications between As-Suwayda and Damascus was severed a year ago. Under Israeli promises adopted by active local figures, regarding the establishment of a religious autonomous rule for the Druze in As-Suwayda, a broad segment of As-Suwayda’s residents, especially those displaced, rose up to support these promises and await their fulfillment. But after all this time, where have the service and political relations between As-Suwayda and Damascus reached, and what is the state of those who supported, promised, and waited?

According to As-Suwayda 25 sources, all government directorates in As-Suwayda have returned to operating under the legal frameworks that link their work to the relevant ministries, except for the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Education, whose file remains pending to this day, amid public outrage over the loss of two academic years for students pursuing basic certificates and fears of losing a third year. The outrage intensified yesterday when a checkpoint at Umm al-Zaytun, affiliated with the local internal security, prevented students from passing toward Damascus.

This includes the internal security command and the As-Suwayda administration, where police elements received salaries for the second time this month on Monday, amid local confirmations that these salaries originate from the Ministry of the Interior in the Damascus government. Alongside this, in the past few months, dozens of local police elements have headed toward Damascus and its countryside with the aim of returning to their jobs, passing through the office of Governor Mustafa Bakkour, appointed by the Damascus government, in as-sora as-soghra, who grants each officer a week’s leave return and a document directed to the Interior Ministry qualifying the officer to receive salaries for the months he was excluded from work.

As for the administration, sources confirmed that any legal action by the directorates toward their ministries passes through the signature of Judge Shadi Murshid, tasked with managing As-Suwayda locally, then to Bakkour’s office, reaching the ministry. This has created an unspoken state of understanding between the local administration in As-Suwayda and the official administration in as-sora as-soghra, amid talks of political negotiations led by mediators between Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri and the administration in As-Suwayda, and al sharaa and political leadership in Damascus, which include discussions on accepting the National Guard’s integration into the Ministry of Defense.

As for the displaced villages, especially in the northern countryside, their owners have begun returning individually for those who could find a way, amid vast areas of destruction and traces of burning, as stated by two sources from the northern countryside who preferred their names be omitted.

One of the sources says that around 300 families from the northern countryside have registered their data with the American Mar Afram Foundation, which is working to restore homes with the aim of bringing back their residents, pointing to the official reopening of a fuel station in as-sora as-soghra through its restoration by the Damascus government, and other similar initiatives currently underway.

In the village of Al-Matuna, controlled by internal Security affiliated with the Damascus government, and according to one of its residents, Bakkour offered the villagers several months ago to enlist the village’s sons into the Public Security ranks and hand them responsibility for the village in exchange for the withdrawal of the currently present forces, with salaries reaching up to 4 million old liras. He added that this offer sparked controversy between opponents and supporters among the village’s residents.

The information provided to As-Suwayda 25 sources shows that all depopulated villages have witnessed repeated visits from their residents, to the point that these visits have become organized collectively to facilitate issuing the necessary permits and escorting the visitors, where each citizen is accompanied by two Public Security elements overseeing his visit to his home and documenting it.

These talks circulate as whispers in the street, under the weight of intimidation by the influential gangs, which over the past year have built a record full of violations of laws, ethics, and the social customs prevalent in As-Suwayda, to the point of becoming a direct reason for many residents to abandon support for the cross-border promises. And the question remains present, as voiced by a number of the displaced: If the political projects must inevitably pass, is there no path for them to take except through our blood?

More details on the failed IED attack in the Suwayda-Damascus highway

Suwayda 24 has obtained details and preliminary information from security sources and eyewitnesses regarding the explosion that occurred yesterday near the village of "Baraq" on the Damascus-Suwayda road, which resulted in the death of the vehicle's driver.

Sources reported that the car, driven by the individual identified as (Mounir Talal Kahal), was observed moving back and forth between the villages of "Al-Sura Al-Kubra" and "Baraq" before it came to a stop on the side of the main road just moments before the explosion occurred inside it.

Details of the On-Site Examination Eyewitnesses who rushed to the scene immediately after the incident stated that the explosion caused severe disfigurement to the driver's body, particularly in the abdominal and pelvic areas, along with the severing of his hand—facts that definitively rule out any hypothesis of him being subjected to gunfire prior to the incident.

On the other hand, the on-site examination of the vehicle confirmed that the explosion originated from inside the driver's cabin; the inspection revealed that the inward buckling of the internal structure proves the force and direction of the blast were from inside to outside, a conclusion further supported by the trajectories of the shrapnel that penetrated from inside the vehicle toward the exterior, while the external parts remained intact from any signs of external targeting.

Security Situation and Investigations In a related context, a security source told Suwayda 24 that the preliminary investigations conducted by the relevant authorities confirm the explosion took place inside the vehicle. The source added that security apparatus continue their search operations, inquiries, and evidence collection to uncover the circumstances of the incident and its full background, with results to be announced upon completion of the investigations.

In his latest live broadcast on his Facebook page, political activist Kamal Shiya (from Suwayda Governorate) made statements addressing the security and political developments in the governorate.

The key points he raised: • Sharp criticism of Salman Al-Hijri (son of Sheikh Hakmat Al-Hijri), accusing him of having complete control over the governorate's affairs.

• Fabricating breaches of the ceasefire: He accused the "National Guard" of fabricating gunfire violations aimed at besieging Suwayda from within, and driving up prices of fuels and basic goods.

• Israeli weapons: He pointed out that the weapons supplied by Israel to the "National Guard" in Suwayda ended up being sold in Daraa markets.

• Criticism of Sheikh Hakmat Al-Hijri: He attacked his delegation of managing numerous files to his son Salman, considering it a model of exploitation.

• Exploiting chaos: He confirmed that some influential figures exploited the state of security chaos to achieve massive financial gains reaching millions of dollars.

These statements came during Kamal Shiya's current visit to Israel, where he is connected by relations with members of the Israeli Knesset and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Hijri's national guard holds a conference on the 2 IEDs it claims to dismantle yesterday

The spokesperson for the National Guard forces, Major Talal Amer, confirmed during a press conference held today, Wednesday, that investigations into the case of the two booby-trapped cars have revealed important details regarding how they entered Suwayda, pointing out that the two cars entered through a commercial intermediary working in the car trade and passed through internal security checkpoints before reaching Suwayda.

Amer explained that the two cars were rigged with highly explosive C4 material, a substance with high destructive power, noting that the rigging method was characterized by great professionalism, as the explosives were connected to a detonator circuit linked to a mobile phone device—a method previously used by the Jabhat al-Nusra organization—and requires technical expertise, technological capabilities, and precise materials to execute.

He clarified that the discovery of the first car came after a citizen purchased the vehicle, when a sound emanating from inside it caught his attention, prompting him to contact the National Guard forces. Following the report, engineering teams headed to the site, and the initial inspection confirmed the presence of highly dangerous materials inside the car.

He added that the report was received by the National Guard on the evening of July 7 at 9:40 PM, and engineering teams managed, within about three hours, to transport the first car to a safe location before beginning the defusing process, which was completed in less than an hour.

Amer pointed out that, during the follow-up of the investigations, the commercial intermediary reported a second car that he had purchased from the same source, so specialized teams went to its location, where it was found to be booby-trapped in the same manner, and it was handled according to approved technical procedures.

He confirmed that the destructive radius of the two cars is no less than 300 meters, and that their explosion would have led to significant human and material losses, praising the swift and professional performance of the engineering teams and the military police, which managed to contain the danger.

The National Guard spokesperson extended thanks to the citizen who took the initiative to report, affirming that the vigilance of the local population was a decisive factor in thwarting the plot, and added that despite the modest capabilities available to the National Guard, its cadres possess high technical expertise that enabled them to deal with this type of threat.

On the political front, Amer stated that the National Guard "does not absolve the extremist government in Damascus of responsibility," explaining that the passage of the two cars through areas under its control, in addition to the nature of the materials used and the rigging mechanism, are all factors that warrant directing accusations at it.

Amer concluded by calling on the people of Suwayda to exercise the utmost caution and to immediately report any object or vehicle that raises security suspicions, affirming that Suwayda faces serious threats due to its proximity to a government "that employs such tactics," and that cooperation between citizens and security forces remains the fundamental pillar for protecting community security and thwarting any terrorist plots.

Lindsay Graham changed his mind about Syria after meeting Al Sharaa

"As to the meeting with President Al Sharaa, I believe it is in America’s national security interest to work with him and give him a chance to see if he can put together a lasting, functioning government in Syria. A fractured Syria, on the other hand, plays into the hands of our enemies. I think President Al Sharaa presents the best chance for a functioning, united Syria over time.

I very much understand Israel’s concerns, but President Al Sharaa has been a true thorn in the side of Iran. He has dramatically reduced Iran’s influence in Syria, which is a giant step forward for the Syrian people and a blow to Iran. It is time to recognize what he’s done regarding Iran and give him the capability to improve the lives of the Syrian people, realizing that the status quo is unacceptable for all."
