Newly blind cat, seeking support

Hello everyone, I am new to this community. One of my kitties, Vivi, is 9 and has recently gone blind. She saw a vet this morning and they ran bloodwork and did eye tests, we ruled out thyroid issues and they don’t think it’s glaucoma or detached retina from high blood pressure. They believe it is immune mediated retinitis. We go back next week after trying prednisolone, which may reverse some of the blindness, but she will never be able to see fully again. As of right now, she seems to be completely blind and has been for a week now.

It has been really hard to see her change like this. She gets around the apartment very well, she can get to her food, water, litter box, and her favourite resting spots, but she is very hesitant, bumps into things, and is sleeping all the time now, not being her normal self. Although she still seeks out my lap to snuggle and purr, and sleeps with us in our bed at night. We know she isn’t in any pain, but she seems so sad, and confused. I’m here seeking any tips from other owners on how me and my girlfriend can support her during this time. How we can keep her happy, comfortable, and how we can help her adapt to this new normal. It’s very uneasy not knowing the exact cause, but I’m still glad we could rule out some things, and I hope this medication helps.

She doesn’t really have much interest in toys but now that she can’t see I’m hoping to try some other types of toys that will stimulate her other senses, so if anyone has any recommendations, I’d love that, for once she’s feeling more secure.

we are really struggling to cope with this big sudden change in our baby and im just seeking support from others in this community. I hope that is okay. Please let me know any advice you can offer to help us through this. Thank you in advance. ❤️‍🩹

Just wanted to share some pics of my girl miss Kitty. I’ve had her since she was 1 and I was 14, we are now 11 and 26. She’s been with me through the hardest times of my life and I love her with all my heart and soul. She is very shy but a total mamas girl and loves to cuddle💗💗💗 I hope she brightens your day 😁

My betta fish doesn't seem happy in a 6 gallon tank, only in a 10.

Hi all! so i have a male plakat betta named charles. he is a very active fish. When i first got him, he was in a 6.5 gallon cube tank. He seemed very energetic and glass surfed the front of the glass ALL DAY...i figured it was just because he wanted food and had a lot of energy. He never really calmed down to be honest. He was in there for about 4 months. Pics of his new tank vs the 10 gallon he was in temporarily attached for reference.

I had to take that tank down to re-do it because i set it up a year prior and i wanted to do the substrate over and give it a makeover, so i put him in an empty 10 gallon tank temporarily that i had ready for other fish i planned on getting. I noticed while he was living in the bigger tank he seemed very chill. He did get excited when he saw me, and when i was doing stuff around the room, but when I would sit and watch the tank, he did not glass surf or seem hyperactive at all. He just explored the tank and seemed really happy. He settled in to it within the first day.

I worked really hard to make the 6.5 gallon tank the best i could, lots of plants, hardscape that had little caves and spots he could explore, and I was really proud of it. When it was finally ready, i put him in, and he at first explored the tank, but soon went back to how he was last time he was in this specific tank. He is overly excited, erratic, glass surfs the front all day, even when he can't see me, and when the lights are off. He's been in there about a week. I started to think maybe he just isn't happy in a tank smaller than 10 gallons, but I have had plans for the 10 gallon for a long time and kept having to push them to the side for various reasons, so I can't put him back in there.

I worked really hard on his tank and I don't have the money or resources at the moment to tear it all down so soon, and I don't want to. I just spent a ton of money and time on setup of his tank. I also don't have the space for any more tanks, I have 4, and the table his tank is on wont fit a longer tank, I bought it specifically for the cube.

basically, I am having a moral dilemma. I know it's not because of reflections, water parameters, or sickness. The tank is cycled. He was absolutely fine in the bigger tank, and only does this behaviour when in the smaller tank. What do you guys think I should do? I want him to be happy, but I also can't just get him a bigger tank right now, and 6.5 gallons should be completely fine, in theory. Not for him it seems. I would have to buy more hardscape and plants to fill a bigger tank, plus the tank its self, I just can't right now. I don't really know what to do at this point, I really want to make this work. Any suggestions are appreciated, sorry for the long post. I feel really frustrated. Has anyone else had their fish react to tank sizes in similar ways?

Struggling with hygrophilia corymbosa Siamese

I have a 20 gallon mid tech tank that’s been chugging along for about a month and a half. I have pressurized co2 running. My hygrophilia corymbosa Siamese as well as the hygrophilia agustifolia are struggling to convert to submersed growth it seems. When I got them I cut them in half and planted, new shoots immediately started growing from the cut point but it hasn’t grown much in height at all. The thick emersed form stems also seem to be melting at the bottom where it’s planted into the substrate and not growing roots. It won’t grow enough for me to cut off the new underwater growth and just plant that. I thought it would grow crazy in a tank with co2 and high quality aqua soil but it’s just not taking off. Any advice? I dose apt 1 every few days and I’ve started also dosing iron and potassium. I also added root tabs under them.

The first few weeks of using co2 I definitely wasn’t injecting enough but I’ve adjusted within the last week so that may be why but idk!

What kind of terrestrial moss could go here?

Hello all! Not sure if this is the right sub to ask about this so please delete if not allowed. But I’m setting up this nano pond aquarium and I want to cover this cut part of the wood coming out of the water with moss. It’s a big area and doesn’t stay wet, so I don’t think any aquatic moss would be able to stay wet even if some of it is submerged. I don’t know anything about terrestrial moss so I thought I’d ask here if anyone had any suggestions on what I could get to survive on this wood. I would be misting it daily. I plan on putting aquatic moss on the wood as well right underneath.

I’ve grown Java moss on top of wood before but at least 50% of it was submerged under the water so it was able to stay wet. But I think this surface area would be too big to wick water all the way up.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Thoughts on this 6.5 g hardscape?

I didn’t have many pieces to work with and what I had left was very spiky lol I’m unsure of it. Need opinions. I’m gonna cover the gravel with a fresh layer of soil but I ran out.

I really wanted that height in the back but I feel like it’s pretty dramatic 😅

Filter turned off for a few hours, now cycle is messed up?

I was doing a dark start cycle for my new 20 gallon tank with just substrate and hardscape. The cycle was progressing nicely, with 2 ppm of ammonia being processed down to 0.50 in 24 hours and nitrites rising. I then drained the tank to add all my plants which took about 2 hours. Everything was shut off for that time.

Now, a week later, ammonia has gone up to 2+ ppm from melting plants (changing from greenhouse growth to underwater growth) and there are no nitrites at all when there was before. It was processing the ammonia very quickly before. I never added anything and 2 ppm from a few plants melting seems really high.

Could turning off the filter for only a few hours really kill my cycle? I’m so confused. I figured it would have been fine because the filter was still wet. It’s basically started from scratch, which is annoying because it was going so well before I added all my plants. I waited about 3 weeks before planting so all that time was basically wasted now.

Only thing I could think of is when I filled the tank back up I waited until it was full to dechlorinate but I didn’t turn the filter on until after I added dechlorinator…

Any advice appreciated. Thanks!
