Maybe dumb question. Should I put tape on my belt if I'm coming back to bjj and joining a new club?

I moved across the world and want to get back into bjj. I used to have a blue belt with 3 stripes. I left it at my home country. Ive got a new belt and idk whether to stick tape on it or just show up and "earn" them back off a new coach.

Random $380 ACH credit bank of America transaction. How can I find more info on what this is?

I just moved to the US and opened an account with Bank Of America. I'm aware of the $500 bonus if I get $10,000 in 90 days, which I will, but it hasn't been 90 days and it's also not $500 that I received

I can't really figure out what else it might be.

Anyone have any ideas?

Purebred or not?

Do you think he's a mix? He's 110lb, two years old. Sometimes, he looks very pure bred to me. Then other times (ears back) he looks like a black lab lol. I can never tell. His father was very purebred looking. We don't have papers or anything and I don't really care what he is. But people on the street always assume he's a mix whilst I personally think he's pure bred but old school looking rather than the new school look. I know there's also like German and American rotties so maybe he's the opposite of what people picture in their head. I look at old school pics of rottweilers and he looks like them. Not so much the new school ones with the more snub nosed and bulkier heavier bodies. His muzzle is longer.

Is there such thing as squash over here, like Robinson's Squash in the UK?

I just moved here 4 weeks ago. Most things are quite similar food and drink wise. But I can't find squash anywhere in the grocery shops. I've found little gum sized versions but they would be gone in like 2 drinks.

In the UK, you can get a big bottle of squash. You mix 6-7 parts water with 1 part squash. It lasts forever and is like 2 dollars.

I understand you also have huge juices but 1) they wouldn't last nearly as long and 2) it would be literally 10x as expensive as mixing squash and water.

I see Robinson's on Amazon but it's like 30 dollars for 3 bottles which seems wild. Maybe there's a local brand I haven't found that's cheaper?

So is there no equivalent?

Best pre built with a 9070xt? I could rent a car and go microcenter, if its worthwhile

Hey all. I just moved to the US and I'm living in SF (Bay Area).

Looking for a decent pre built with a 9070xt that won't break the bank (best bang for buck). I play shooter and survival games mostly such as Warzone, Arma, DayZ, GTA, Battlefield etc and id like to be able to play 1440p or 4k

I previously had a 6750xt with a Ryzen 5 5500 I believe. But didn't bring it with me from my home country. It ran most games fine but I'd like to future proof and upgrade my next rig.

I'm about 1 hour from a microcenter in San Jose. I don't have a car but could rent one if a deal is good enough at microcenter.

Suggestions?

Claiming tax back paid so far in 2026 if I emmigrate. Possible? How much might I expect?

I'm probably going to butcher what I'm trying to say and over complicate things, but bare with me.

So, I left Ireland for a new start elsewhere. In Ireland, I was earning 90k salary + bonus and 12-15k per year in stock (taxed as income). So 100k or so per year is what id typically make.

Due to the tax brackets of 20% bumping to 40% at 45k and over, I know I've vastly overpaid on taxes for the first 6 months of the year as I believe the tax is averaged out across the year, correct? As in nobody pays 20% in Jan/Feb and then starts at 40% for the remaining of the year. It's kind of averaged out across the year.

And since I'm leaving halfway, I would assume 90% of my pay should've been taxed at 20% as my final earnings by the time I left was only approx 50k rather than the assumed 100k.

I know there is a split year tax claw back which seems to return the tax credits, but I'm more so referring to the actual tax I may have overpaid due to the brackets kicking in under the assumption I'd earn the full 100k this year.

With all of this in mind, have I got this right or am I mistaken? I'm not referring to any previous years btw. Just 2026. And just income.

Is there any other things I might want to investigate after emmigrating?

Just moved to the US. What is the TLDR of what to pay/not pay with a credit card, and what are good options with no credit history?

I'm from Ireland. We don't generally use or need credit cards for loans or leasing or anything like that. So it's all kind of new for me. I personally had a credit card, but only for car rental deposits and nothing else.

I've moved to the US with my job and I know credit cards are a huge thing here. It seems like every business wants me to sign up for their card, and everyone wants me to pay with credit card.

So what do people actually buy with their credit card? Groceries? Retail shopping? Gas? Car loans? Rent? (I'm paying my lease through Bilt which hooks up to my SSN so I assume paying with credit card is meaningless here)

Whats the process after you pay? Go home and clear it right away? Set up some auto payment to your credit card? Clear it once a week?

And then lastly, out of the seemingly endless options for credit cards, what is a solid option for someone in my situation?

Just moved to the East Bay from Ireland. Overthinking but paranoid of mountain lion and/or bears

Hello all. I just moved here from Ireland and i love hiking. I am going to hike regardless, but moving from a country where the most dangerous wild animal is probably a squirrel... to a place with mountain lions and bears... is a shift in my mindset.

Do locals just hike and hope for the best? Or are people carrying pocket knives/bear spray? Any tips and tricks? I'll be hiking with my rottweiler for the most part and I'd imagine a dog would be a bigger target than a person.

The paranoia probably stems from watching too many bear attacks videos on YouTube and hearing of a guy who got into it with a mountain lion whilst hiking.

My Timelines & Experience as an L1B applicant

Hello all. I received my passport back today with my stamped visa. At this point, I am free to enter the US whenever I choose. With that, I wanted to share my timelines for any future applicants thinking about L1B.

March 7th: reached out to manager who had posted a job internally, asked if he was interested in non US applicants. Got looped in with the recruiter. They said they would sponsor a visa!

March 8th: completed an initial eligibility assessment with my companies partner attorney firm (Barry Appleman). They wanted me to pass this before going any further. This involved uploading my relevant ID documents, education documents, work experience, resume, etc. they got back after 2 days and said I'm good to continue and was eligible for L1B and H1 but wanted to go with L1 as it would be quicker to fill the role and my partner (who became my wife later in the process) could also work.

March 10th - March 29th: completed 4 rounds of internal job interviews. Nothing crazy here related to visas.

April 4th: was told I got the job, salary, location, etc.

April 6th: same attorneys from the initial assessment reached out and asked me to upload all my documents again and write big lists of what I do now and what I'll do in the new role.

April 7th - May 4th: attorneys disappeared. They sent me back a support letter on May 4ththat they wanted me to proof read which basically amplifies how "special" you are to the company. They then told me the company they use for education evaluations had some issues with my education (couldn't match it to the US equivalent of a bachelor, which was a requirement for L1 blanket). I disagreed with this.

April 22nd: we got married. Uploaded marriage cert to attorneys portal and let them know.

May 6th: we booked our consulate interview in my nearby city (in Europe). The date was May 22nd.

May 12th: I paid for my own education evaluation. The company issued a letter supporting my bachelor degree equivalence in the US.

May 19th: attorneys sent out L1 packet

May 21st: packet arrived at my home. I glanced over it.

May 22nd: attended the consulate interview and passed no issues (will be happy to answer specific questions if anyone has any)

May 27th: received stamped passport!

I think the process was relatively quick from the moment I accepted the job to the moment I got the passport stamped (less than 2 months overall). It was smooth for the most part except the education hiccup. I think attorneys could've moved a little faster during the initial April timeframe they disappeared but overall it went quick and easy.

I aim to move to the US next week!

Does it not infuriate some Devs that companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI brag about replacing Devs, but the tool they sell is literally only possible because of the data they stole from every corner of the internet and monetized?

I see engineers in my company all aboard the AI hype train. They post any new Anthropic article or OpenAI. They reallyyy want a VP or director to pat them on their back for accepting AI into their lives with open arms.

I don't get this mindset. As a developer, I feel robbed. Idk how others don't feel this way. It is infuriating to see these CEOs talk so openly about how replacing software engineers is basically their first goal... yet everything that they are selling is from the very software engineers they want to replace when they scrapes every inch of the internet and didn't pay a penny for the information the found.

To me it is just disrespectful. If someone helped you on stackoverflow, it was usually not so you could go make billions, and you usually individually thanked them...

Anthropics situation is different. They got help by parsing the whole damn internet, didn't say a single thank you to any developers, are now paywalling their tools made off the backs of other Devs, and now they talk about how they want to replace Devs.

Why do I feel insane being the only person in my company that DOESNT want to lay down and accept this bs?

Blanket L1B and L2 interview at Dublin embassy next week. Advice/prep questions?

Hello all.

My wife and I are interviewing at the Ireland US embassy next week. My company has a blanket L1 petition which I am going under. My wife and I just very recently got married once we realised all of this was happening (last month) but have evidence of home ownership and pics together going years back that we will bring with us.

We hopefully will be allowed to interview together as we have a single folder with all of our documents.

I have 5 YOE in the foreign entity of a US software company (large).

I am changing roles from one org to an entirely different org. Tech wise? There isn't a huge amount of cross over. There is some crossover with processes and security standards, which is what I intend to mention as my specialized knowledge as the new role will be implementing security policy for the new org. So I will say something along the lines of "I have deep expertise of our internal security standards and implementing those standards as policy to secure our cloud environment. We are the only team internally that does this kind of work so I will be carrying these skills over to the new org and helping them improve their security posture by enforcing similar policies following the internal standards"

But I frankly don't know if this is sufficient. There is MANY internal tools and software systems that we use in my org. But the new org? Not so much.

What questions/advice would you give me for the day, and my wife who will get asked some questions I assume about the recent marriage?

L1B visa mistake to avoid that I just ran into that may cost me my job

Just be aware: people like to say you need 1 year experience in a company and specialized knowledge and that's it. It's not true. Well, it can be. But it differs if your company has a Blanket L1 or they're submitting an individual L1.

If your company files a blanket L1, you need to have a degree or 12 years of experience. If you don't, you may waste your time and hit a roadblock right as you're about to go to your consulate interview. This is what I have seen. My company's attorneys were 1 month preparing my letter and then they brought up that I don't have a degree or 12 years experience and said I'm not really eligible for an L1 blanket (well they said I could still go to the interview. But there is a risk I would be denied without one of these two). And that I should've done Individual L1, so they now need to resubmit but the delayed timelines might cost me my new job.

I just want to make people aware of this because if you're like me.... I don't have a degree and I don't have 12 years of experience. All my research of L1 was basically "get 1 year experience in a foreign company, have them sponsork you and say you're specialized" but this isn't really the full picture and things can backfire and you should be aware of this. If you're like me, ensure your company goes for an individual L1 from day 1 and not a blanket L1 as they do differ!

My new manager and recruiter are more annoyed at our attorneys for missing this detail so late as it's obviously not my fault as I'm not the professional, they are. But don't rely on lawyers to provide you every damn detail. They might skim your case and submit the wrong thing and that can bite you in the ass later.

Moving from Europe to the US internally. How does "Flexible Time Off" work in reality?

My understanding is it's "unlimited" but not really. That confuses me. What is generally considered "too much" time off?

For reference, I'm moving from Europe to the US. We get 25 days Paid Time Off (PTO) and can buy 5 more days with salary. Which I always do, so I usually have 30 days off per year.

How does FTO work compared to this?
