In 1672, during the Dutch “Disaster Year” (Rampjaar), an angry mob in the Dutch Republic lynched political leader Johan de Witt and his brother Cornelis de Witt after military disasters and political chaos. Contemporary accounts and later historical reports say parts of their bodies were mutilated, and some body parts have been eaten by members of the crowd.
