Dickason Potholes Before & After

These potholes were reported by me recently on the 4000 block of Dickason in the Oak Lawn neighborhood.

The ticket was filed by me through the app on July 2 at 2:18 AM.

I received an email notification that the potholes had been repaired on July 2 at 3:56 PM.

13 1/2 hours, people.

Go outside right now. Find a pothole. Report it. We can heal the city together.

Estimates & Impact

It was a little clunky, but I figured out a way to export all the data from my 311 tickets filed within the last year and change.

According to my count, I have filed 1,779 tickets with the City of Dallas since around April 2025.

These tickets have resulted in total parking ticket revenues of about $20,000 and a total "civic response cost" of about $900,000 (again, I don't have data but I came up with some conservative cost estimates and the model came out somewhere between $500,000 and $1.8 million)

It's impossible to know an exact number without all the appropriate data, but because I have reported so much in the way of:

  1. Potholes

  2. Street repairs needed

  3. Drainage issues

  4. Traffic sign condition issues / damage

  5. Traffic signal problems / damage

  6. Traffic markings issues (faded crosswalks, lanes, etc.)

  7. Construction barrier issues (instruction conflict / knocked over, etc.)

  8. Dead animal pick-up

  9. City park maintenance

  10. Code violations (vegetation obstruction of traffic signs emanating from private property, usually)

And so much more

The city has mobilized around million dollars in resources to remediate these concerns. I can literally point out entire streets that have been redone because of tickets I filed to note the serious condition of the street and there are more on the way (N Henderson & Capitol is falling apart and the city is working to address it this summer, for example). There are new traffic signs in Deep Ellum because of feedback I provided about the safety hazard of through traffic on Floyd St. There are new lane configurations because I pointed out certain intersections had incorrect instructions in the signage. There are some signs I've literally found buried in trees which the city and its people had forgotten about and which are now visible.

Here's what amazes me - I am just one guy. One guy, by filing tickets in a system, was able to get all these resources mobilized. Imagine if everyone in Dallas took time out of their day to report a damaged sidewalk, a faded traffic sign, a traffic signal bulb that is out, a cracking/sinking street, a car blocking the sidewalk, an abandoned vehicle, a damaged rail crossing, a homeless encampment, or any number of other things.

FOLKS - One guy driving around doing Uber on the side was able to passively mobilize a million dollars of resources to make the city where we all live and work better. You can, too.

My Sick, Selfish Transit Dream (Requiem For A Wendy's)

I live at The Pradera. There are several apartment complexes in this area, including The James, Creekside Townhomes, Estates of Richardson, and Marquis at Waterview.

Though I am somewhat unfamiliar with the zoning law around train stations, I believe there is enough space to add a station at this portion of Custer Road between Renner and PGBT. In my mind, I have named it "Custer Creek Station" after Custer Road and Canyon Creek.

It might be possible to leave the Wendy's or it might have to be bulldozed. I'm not sure, but I do know they got rid of breakfast at that location, so they're dead to me as far as I'm concerned (RIP Breakfast Baconator within walking distance)

After riding the Silver Line yesterday, I am even more convinced that this would be an excellent place to add a station someday.

Anyone agree/disagree?

First time on Silver Line (finally!!)

I am so impressed at how smooth the ride was on this train! I must admit I took the long way to get to a destination (Silver to 250 via ATC vs. Red/Orange to a different bus) in order to have an excuse to ride it.

I saw many people with bags clearly headed to the airport board the train, especially at UT Dallas Station. Personally, I'm thinking I myself may start using the train instead of driving! I can take the 883 or the 232 to CityLine or UT Dallas Station and then take the Silver Line to the airport. The only downside is if I have a super early flight I can't do it OR if my flight back comes in super late I'll miss the last train out. But I feel like for some trips it would be awesome!!!!!!

You are all making me so proud 🥲

Last night, I reported a traffic sign blocked by vegetation from a residence which I spotted while driving.

I was informed today that it was a duplicate case because somebody else reported it four days ago.

More people are using 311 (phone/app/site) to take care of our city and that's just warming my heart 😍

S1E4: M. Night Shaym-Aliens! [Observations]

It was pretty obvious on the first watch once they find Jerry that they're still inside a simulation because Jerry is wearing a tuxedo that we know is from the simulator. That's clearly a bug since he left one simulation for another but hasn't truly entered the real world yet.

But what's less obvious is this --

At what point did Rick figure out that he wasn't dealing with the real Morty?

Rick caught on that Morty MIGHT be real and even saw that Morty was fully "complete" (right down to the genitalia). I think Rick did initially think Morty had been abducted because he says the line "they made one mistake, they dragged you into this."

But when they leave the first simulator, they go into the room with the computer chips and Rick does something really out of character. I never really understood the meaning of this scene because it seems so useless and out of place. Rick starts laughing and playing, throwing a chip at Morty and even wrestling with him. He says something like "nothing wrong with a little bit of horseplay every now and then, right buddy?"

Morty is laughing it off and playing along, whereas the real Morty likely would have been majorly confused by this change in behavior and affectation.

That was Rick testing to see if he was still inside a simulation. That's why when they do get home he goes straight for the safe and says "Hmm. I thought I entered the code right" in a sort of Jane Wickline-y tone.

There's another cue that Morty isn't real, when one of the Xygerians says "no wonder, there's another real human in the simulator." By that point, we are assuming that they mean "another" to be 2 + 1, but in actuality the Morty is simulated and using probably a lot of their processing power since it's so hyperrealistic.

The simulations became more advanced as Rick escaped them as an attempt to deceive him, but he identified he was in a simulation each time.

The first one was deliberately sloppy and also probably flawed because keeping up a simulation of a simulation inside a simulation probably used just gobs and gobs of computing power, so we ended up with Pop Tart driver and toaster car as well as "my man!" guy.

Rick's first simulation was a simulation of a simulation and Jerry moved from the simulation of the simulation to the regular simulation flawlessly because he was in bed with barely-moving Beth while the simulation was frozen due to Rick's concert, so he wouldn't have noticed that things had stopped. When Rick came back through and found Jerry, they were now inside the master simulation.

But the reason Jerry was force-exited from the simulation is that at the beginning they set a hard rule "cap his sector at 5% processing power, keep his settings on auto, and we'll deal with him later."

The problem there was as Rick got physically closer to the machine in the surrounding simulation, it caused an unforeseen glitch that killed the original simulation of a simulation, with the tuxedo remaining as a vestigial record of the glitch.

By this point, Rick knows Morty isn't real but is playing along because he knows he's still in a simulation. He figures Jerry might be real because, Occam's Razor, the Xygerians would accidentally abduct an extra human and of course it would be Jerry. The three of them make a break for a ship and of course we know Rick knows he's in a simulation because he gives a fake recipe for concentrated dark matter to the fake Morty. Rick pretends to be surprised and Jerry is now basically named since he was abducted in his sleepwear and his clothes were all simulated.

I don't know why I'm writing this except that these are the types of mind-bending Rick & Morty episodes I miss. The show uses to be a lot more thoughtful. Now they go for spectacle over substance and it makes me a little sad. The rewatch value of these newer episodes is much lower for this reason.

Is it just me, or are the trains faster now?

I don't know if they're running at higher speeds to keep up with the new schedule around the World Cup but I took the train recently and I genuinely couldn't believe how fast it was.

I got on the train at SMU/Mockingbird and felt like the train was going so fast I could barely lean forward in my seat fighting the inertia.

And next thing I knew I was at Galatyn Station, right before my stop.

I almost wonder if I should start some sort of transit consultancy firm where for $20 I'll help people understand how to get to work or common places they go using transit. Every day, I wake up to posts about people who are stuck on US-75 or I-35 or the DNT upset about traffic and how much do you wanna bet that a lot of those people probably live or work near a station and don't even realize it?

I live so close to CityLine I could use the Park & Ride but most of the time I don't even bother, I just take the bus! Although that did bite me in the ass recently when I got back too late for the last bus and had to walk almost three miles home 🤣.

Maybe I'm an idiot, but I am just asking...

Is it just me, or did the buses used to run later? I know that there were some cuts made as part of negotiations with Plano or whatever, but I remember taking the trains to CityLine and taking the last bus home, could've sworn it was 12:30 AM - 1 AM or so. Maybe I'm mistaken.

But I rolled up there tonight after getting off the Orange Line at 12:37 AM only to learn the last bus had left 97 minutes prior 🤣🤣🤣.

Rather than take an Uber, I decided to walk home. It took about 78 minutes to get from CityLine station to my apartment complex. It started out fun, but Renner Road is LONG and unforgiving. What's worse, I had just come from seeing Backrooms and my brain started to feel like I was trapped in some sort of liminal, neverending street space.

Still, though, I had fun taking myself on a movie date even though it ended with me getting into a verbal altercation with a homeless person and spending almost as much time walking home from the train station as I spent in the chair watching the movie 🤣🤣🤣

Adventures with DART

Tonight, I took the 883E to Mockingbird Station to see a movie at Angelika. On the way back, while waiting on the train, I was approached by a raggedy-looking man in a red hoodie who asked to bum a cigarette. He kept yelling at me as I kept ignoring him and I finally told him to go away or I would call DART police.

He made several threatening gestures and said things about how I was going to "catch hands" and "just wait 'till I cash this CHECK boy" like I give a hoot about his finances.

I called DART police and gave them a description of the man. Several minutes have gone by and no officer has responded. It's not clear to me whether he should even legally be on the platform as I don't know if he has a ticket. There is another man walking around disoriented and shirtless.

I am sad to see that this is where we are as a society. I am pro-2A but do not own a gun, however every time I go out I feel like I find another reason to buy one for self-defense.

Just trying to catch the train home after taking myself on a movie date and I am not dealing with this shit. I'm not letting somebody get close enough to me to smoke a cigarette and borrow my lighter, that is a classic move to ambush someone and I'm not letting it happen.

Shame on DART police for not responding in a timely manner. My train is now coming and how much you wanna bet this guy is going to get on the train with me and cause more commotion?

Oh, nevermind, it's the Orange Line. I am waiting on the Red. Oh, this is strange. The Orange doesn't normally go to Parker at this hour, but this train says it does. I got on.

Red hoodie bum seems to have remained on the platform for now.

Archer Audio in Dream

I thought I would share this with you all. Sometimes, when I'm feeling stressed, it helps me fall asleep if I listen to a show with which I'm very familiar. My top 2 picks are Archer and Rick & Morty.

I was having a really nice dream that I had just married this absolutely gorgeous woman. It was our wedding night and we were in a beautiful hotel room about to consummate the marriage. Suddenly, my bride looked me in the eyes and said to me:

"STERLING MALLORY ARCHER, YOU ARE GOING TO BEAT CANCER."

I was very confused, and then I woke up.

Anybody else's trip count glitching?

I used to have like 14,000 trips and now it says I have 5,000. But how could that even be true if I had 7,000 5-star trips?
