Caught my first fish on my UL set up

Little bluegill on a rooster tail. I unfortunately just lost the rooster tail to some underwater structure I cannot see. I’ll have to get some more.

It smoked that thing. I was literally starting to pull my rooster tail out the water and it snatched it up. Hooked itself for me on the treble hooks. I forgot to crimp my barbs so it was a pain in the butt to get off, but I did crimp them immediately afterward! But I lost it anyway so it’s not like I’m gonna be treble hooking another bluegill tonight 😅

Rate / Critique my First Ultra Light Set Up

7’0” Canyon Creek “Super Ultra Light” Rod paired with a Daiwa Crossfire LT1000 reel.
Lure weight rated for 1/64th to 1/8th ounce.
Line weight rated for 2-6lbs.

I put 10lb braid on as the main line. I got 4lb fluorocarbon yesterday for my leader line but I lost like 4 of the lures I bought ( they all broke off ) so I ditched the 4lb fluorocarbon. The only other thing I had on hand was 17lb fluoro so I slapped that on, but I’m deffo going to get some lesser strength fluorocarbon. I just don’t trust myself to not lose lures on something as light as 4lbs.

I’d never heard of Canyon Creek until I went to Dunham’s yesterday, but people have caught ( allegedly ) 22lb carp on it so I’m sure it’ll be good for me.

My only issue with the rod itself is that it’s a 2 piece and ever since I put it together yesterday, I have NOT been able to separate them lol

But that isn’t too big of an issue. Just slightly annoying. I wanted to keep it in my car so I could go fishing whenever an opportunity presented itself.

Thoughts?

First Ultra Light Rod and Reel recommendations

As the title suggests, I’m looking for recommendations on Ultra Light set ups. I would prefer something budget friendly as it will be my first one. No more than 150 at the most. Please also include any lines you would use on it and what poundage. I know nothing about the world of Ultra Light.

I go Bass fishing frequently and have been skunked every single time since April 30th. I know there are tons of small fish where I go though and I’m also aware you can still catch bass on ultralight stuff, but I’m tired of not catching anything lol.

Thanks for any and all input.

Bait caster recommendations/ assistance

Hey, guys. I currently have a Johnny Morris Carbonlite Jig Technique rod. It is fun to throw, but it does not cast as far as I need.

It is 7’3”, Medium Heavy, Fast action. It is rated for 3/8ths to 1oz lures. I am using lures within that range or slightly above it. It doesn’t cast very far. I’ve had the brakes on 0 ( in the past ) and just thumbed it and saw no noticeable increase in my distance.

I have an Ugly Stik 7’0” rod with a Daiwa Regal LT3000CXH on it. It casts as far as I need it to. I’ve actually been neglecting my Ugly Stik in favor of trying to catch my first bass on my Carbonlite rod so I’ve forgotten just how good it is. I was able to launch my Coike ( hooked on a jig head ) across the entire cove I was fishing today ONTO the other side.

I don’t know if I’m being too gentle with my Carbonlite rod and that could be affecting it, but I swear I sling it with a good amount of force behind it.

With that said, I am looking for advice on how to get more distance with my Baitcaster OR recommendations for a budget friendly Baitcasting reel comparable to my Daiwa Regal in performance.

Thanks for any and all guidance!

Summer baits?

I’ve been struggling to catch a bass for the past two months. As it’s been getting hotter, I feel like nothing I’m throwing is working.

What lures / baits are yall throwing at the moment? I tend to go fishing around 4pm. Some nights ( like 10pm or later ) I go fishing and catch catfish like it’s nothing, but no bass.

Any tips would help.

**Edit**

Thanks you all for all of the advice. I didn’t expect this post to get as many comments as it’s gotten. I would prefer to thank everyone individually, but I would be sitting on my phone for a while doing so, so I ask for your understanding if you see me just give you an upvote. I will come back to this post the next time I go to my local Cabela’s and see if they’ve got the lures y’all are talking about.

Field and Stream Nessmuk?

Shopping around for my first Kayak. I go fishing a lot and I dread the bank now. With summer rapidly approaching, I’d like to get out into the middle of the lake I regularly fish at.

I was at Tractor Supply today and saw they had a Field and Stream Nessmuk for 700? 12 foot Kayak. 35.6 inches wide. Says it supports up to 500 pounds.

I looked online and can’t find anything about it. I don’t know if it’s new or what, but the only YouTube videos about a Field and Stream Kayak was their “Shadow Caster.”

Has anyone ever seen or used a Nessmuk? Any quality issues about Field and Stream? It looked super nice when I first saw it in person today.

( If it’s a trash boat, feel free to leave suggestions in a 600-1000 dollar price range. I don’t need anything crazy. I’m a bit heavy though at 230 pounds so nothing with a weight capacity of like 200 please lol )

Fishing Spots near BG?

I live in BG. I’m looking for good spots to fish at. I go to Barren River Lake most of the time, but I’m looking for other spots. ***I can only fish from the bank.*** I’m looking at Kayaks, but I haven’t saved up quite enough just yet.

I’ve tried the Duck Park in BG and had success with it like a month ago, but nowadays I don’t get anything.

Barren River Lake is alright. I’ve caught some bass and channel cats there before.

I’m willing to drive no more than an hour and thirty minutes. Anything past that and the fish better just leap out of the water and into my hands 😂

Any and all help / guidance is appreciated! Thanks.
