Drama at the waterhole! [Nikon D7000 + Nikkor 55-200mm]

Sub-adult tigers can have surprisingly intense encounters with one another. These aren’t usually organised “fights” as we humans imagine. They’re often a mixture of play, practice, competition, and genuine aggression.

In my observation (and I could be very wrong here), one way to tell whether a grappling session is a playful scuffle or serious brawl is that play tends to be reciprocal, with the animals taking turns chasing and wrestling, and frequently disengaging and taking breaks.

Genuine aggression is more one-sided and involves continuous threatening behaviour, defensive postures, hard bites or blows accompanied by intense vocalisations, and attempts to drive the other tiger away.

This grey-winged blackbird is going to have an absolute feast today, consequently resulting in the local extinction of earthworms from this nicely manicured patch of grass in the Lansdowne cantonment area.

Despite its common name, the grey-winged blackbird is not really a blackbird in the North American sense, but instead it belongs to the thrush family.

What is a thrush? I’m glad you asked.

The thrush family is a group of mostly medium-sized (somewhere between a pigeon and a sparrow) songbirds found across much of the world. Thrushes are famous for their beautiful, flute-like songs and are among the most celebrated singers in the bird world. Being omnivorous by nature, they eat insects, worms, snails, berries, and other fruits. You can find them hopping along the ground, turning over leaves in search of food.

India has an impressive diversity of thrushes. Around 20–25 species occur in the country, including year-round residents, Himalayan breeders, and winter migrants from Central and northern Asia. The Western Ghats are among India’s best regions for resident thrushes, followed by the lesser and middle Himalayas.

The magnificent Moyar Waterfall on the Moyar River, right before descending into a 20-kilometre-long Moyar Canyon in Tamil Nadu. [OM System OM-1 + Olympus 12-100mm f/4 PRO]

The river is a natural boundary between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and between the national parks of Bandipur (Karnataka) and Mudumalai (Tamil Nadu).
