Finding the car

For those enthusiasts who know these cars better then me, what should I do when trying to find a car on Facebook marketplace. I will admit driving long distances to see a car only to be disappointed by condition is not very rewarding right now. I am not sure if it’s just a result of budget or living in the American Midwest where rust is a major issue, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to just want to find a reasonably priced w201 without any major issues. For my marketplace warriors, what would you all suggest I do to try and help the search along, or do I accept there is going to be a lot of shenanigans involved and a lot of time spent trying to find the one?

Should I buy?

I’d like to know if a w201 with a rusted out jack point would be worth buying? While I can do a lot of the work myself I have never welded before and welding in a new jack point would be beyond my ability. The local euro car specialist without seeing the damage ball parked it around 2-4k to fix wanted to know what all of you though and when seen in person would that still be the case for price. I’ll include a photo as well. Thank you for your help!

Valve cover gasket or head gasket?

Hello folks, I’m looking to pickup a w124 tomorrow, and when reviewing the photos, I noticed a small oil leak by the number 6 spark plug. I’d want to know is it worth it to make the trip out and if I am out there how would I be able to tell the difference. The seller claimed the mechanic he takes his car too said it’s a valve cover gasket, but obviously one wants to verify these clams before paying money and relying on the car to drive 2 1/2 hours home. I’ll include a photo of the engine as well, thank you for your help!

W123 transmission

Hello folks,

I have finally taken the plunge into looking for my first fun/project car and am looking for a w123. I’m going to look at one next weekend, and the owner being upfront said the car has some transmission problems. He described both a bit of rough shifting as well as a bit of slipping. What I want to know is would this be a vacuum issue, or would this be a full on transmission issue given the symptoms. What could I do out in the field when looking at this car to correctly diagnose? The car does come with an extra transmission of unknown quality and origin which may or may not be good. Please do let me know if I should go for it, or if I should walk away. Thank you all for your help!

Oiling an undercarrige

Hello folks,

I am looking at replacing my daily here soon with a classic (Mercedes w123) (long story) and before I commit to using a classic as a daily and living in the American Midwest I need to figure out how to prevent rust. Washing a car is off the table as the doors would freeze shut in the winter, but I have heard of and seen that putting oil on the underside of a car may work. I would like to know if anyone has any experience doing this for their cars in the winter, what results have been had, and what can be recommended as far as oils to use and application of said oil. Thank you for your help!

Wearhouse worker

Hello everyone,

I am a wearhouse worker dealing with some lingering symptoms of mono. Mostly a sore throat and spleen pain. While advice is to take it easy and not go to work, I can’t take time off work right now, I simply can’t afford to. I work a very demanding manual labor job as a wear house worker. I can’t take time off as I have bills and such. Wanted to know what anyone would do in this situation, I have had mono for 2 months now at least maybe longer, and am not sure what to do or if I’ll ever get fully better. Need advice for this
