A thank you.

On the offchance they’re reading this, just wanted to thank the kind gentleman who offered up his seat for my two young kids on the crowded Waverley to Tweedbank train on Saturday evening, and also to the two ladies who were so friendly and chatty with my kids (particularly my daughter, who was in that tired-but-hyped-up phase that kids get to after a fun, busy day of exploring!). We had had a fantastic day already and made lots of memories in the city, but our abiding memory of the people of Edinburgh will be the kindness of you lovely people; thank you!

Coastal path condition

Hi all. I’m visiting Berwick-upon-Tweed next week and trying to scope out some good places to go running while I’m there. Just wondering if anyone can tell me what the condition of the coastal path is? (The red one on the map that goes from the Scottish border down to the holiday campsite at Berwick). I’m having to stick to paths that are fairly decent underfoot as I’ve only just recovered from an ankle sprain. Any help is greatly appreciated; thank you.

Iron Linings - Urban Abyss (new LP of hardcore-inflected noise-rock)

Genuine AOTY contender for me, and possibly my favourite thing The Ghost Is Clear Records have put out (which is really saying something, given how consistently awesome that label is!).

How we feeling about Creepoid? I’ve always liked them in passing, but checked out their debut LP Horse Heaven this week and absolutely can’t get enough of it!

Love that “desert” feel. The guitar leads sound like heat haze looks, if that makes sense?!

Drug Church’s rarest track?

Many of you will be familiar with the track Mohawk from the self-titled EP, a song which has guest vocals: Jeremy Bolm of Touché Amoré sings the bridge section.

You may also be aware of the “alternate version” included as a bonus track on streaming services and digital downloads which has Chris Linkovich from Cruel Hand singing the bridge in place of Jeremy.

However, unbeknownst to many, there’s a third version of Mohawk. It’s on the CD I’ve linked here, a compilation album that was a joint venture between Topshelf Records and No Sleep Records. It’s mislabelled as “Northway (Rough Mix)” but what you’ll hear is in fact Mohawk but with Pat handling all of the vocals.

So why make a whole post about it? Well, for my money, Pat’s take on the bridge section is one of his finest vocal performances - the absolute venom with which he spits the line “meth-heads livin’ off Ma” is furious! I wish they’d put this version on Bandcamp or something so I didn’t have to dig out the CD when I want to hear it!

(Also, tangentially related to this post: does anyone know who that is singing guest vocals on the pre chorus of Scotia Snake God from the DC demo?).

Most of Rafael Anton Irisarri’s discography is pay-what-you-want on Bandcamp this week.

Just a heads up; a good chance to pick up any releases you’re missing. I can’t recommend this guy enough; his A Fragile Geography was my gateway into ambient and remains a firm favourite. I would also recommend Solastalgia (a super atmospheric, moody piece that feels like a watching a huge cloud system rolling in), and his release from earlier this year, Points of Inaccessibility, an impossibly beautiful and melodic record.

Stone Circles, dolmens, other archaeological monuments

I’ve stumbled across a zine called Weird Walk in which there was some particularly interesting writing about dolmens (prehistoric stone tombs), stone circles, henges and other archaeological monuments and it occurred to me that I’d not ever visited anything like these before. Does anyone know of any ancient sites like this in the Lincs area please? I’m based near Lincoln and happy to journey within or outside the county; really anywhere within maybe 90mins drive would be suitable. My preference would be for more remote places rather than touristy places with visitor centres, but I’m open to suggestions of any kind really. Any tips massively appreciated; thanks!

New Sungaze LP - I’m No Longer Afraid of Heights

Stumbled across this on Bandcamp and checked it out as I liked the artwork. I know having the word “gaze” in the band name itself is a little on-the-nose, but this is legitimately really good. The melodies in particular are fantastic.

Shores - Precedents (excellent, sparse-sounding slowcore from Grand Rapids)

This band are fantastic and yet I rarely see them talked about on here. They have a handful of really great records, some of which (this one included) are digital self-releases only. Their earlier stuff came out on No Idea Records and they feature ex-members of - for want of a better phrase - beardy gruff-punk bands (no shade, I love that stuff too), so I’m wondering if people pass over them not realising they play slowcore? Either way; massively recommended.

Mogwai - EP+6 (album cover location)

Went for a holiday driving around Scotland a few years ago; did a bit of research and managed to find the water tower that’s on the cover of Mogwai’s EP+6 compilation (seen more clearly on the vinyl reissue entitled EPx3).
