First time, random questions

This community is so wonderful! I have gone through a bunch of it but these questions I havent found an answer to yet.

We have a 10yo staying with us. So far, smooth sailing. I'm new at this though and second guessing everything.

Bedtime - Do you check in on your kiddos overnight? He gets settled down very nicely and so far as I know stays in his room overnight. I know he has woken up in the night but it hasn't been disruptive - he told me one morning that he "needed a task for his brain" one night so he put together a small lego set, then went back to sleep. I sleep heavily though so if I should be poking my head in, I want to set alarms and such to make sure it happens.

Allowance - he wants to do chores in exchange for money to save up, I would rather do chores with each other and give him an allowance (maybe with bonuses for extra stuff). Thoughts on a reasonable "rate"? This would be his "fun money", he came to us with essentially nothing so right now clothes, shoes, even toys are necessities I take care of, in my opinion.

Bonus question - he's obsessed with Five Nights at Freddy's so any suggestions for books that would scratch that itch without being too scary would be great.

Does Word no longer export equations to a figure tag in PDF?

I swear this used to work, but I tried multiple methods this morning and nothing exported.

  1. Create an equation using the Equation Editor in Word

  2. Export to PDF, making sure it's set to include accessibility tags

Each time, it exported the math as a random text string in a P tag. I tried with one of Word's built-in equations and nothing.

Best location for alt text?

Hi all,

I am helping with a project to add alternative text to our library's digital archives, and we are running into a couple issues. Specifically, what location for alt text makes the most sense for a site like this, and how do we handle alternative text for the downloadable images?

Online version: Here's an example of an image in one of our collections. The online viewer pulls a ton of information about the image, and we are planning on adding a new field for alternative text. Does this make sense?

Downloadable: Every image can be downloaded, usually as a .tiff (scroll to the bottom of the page). What is the best way to include alt text for the downloadable copy? We've been playing with adding alternative text to the properties of the image itself, but it's been hit or miss whether that can be read by a screen reader - it seems to depend on what image viewer you are using after you download it. We could add a second file for download with the .tiff converted to pdf and alt text added there, but that feels annoying to the user who would have to determine which one has the content they need. Saying "the website has the alt text" doesn't seem fair either - it's possible on the site to download the full collection, so you'd lose that context.

Thoughts? Ideas? Thanks in advance!
