And I’m devastated.

For context, all 3 of us are coworkers. My crush (let’s call him J) and I work in different departments but same office and my friend (Let’s call her K) works in another office but same department as J. K and I have been friends for over 2 years even before she started working at our current job. K has also known J for over 2 years in another professional setting. J and I have been coworkers for 2 years but did not meet each other in person until last year when I was transferred.

J and I have gotten very close over the past year. We share the same likes and interests and have the same humor. At one point, we started texting outside of work, would flirt, and give each other the look whenever we passed by each other in the hallways. Our other coworker who tends to be very loud and overly friendly noticed and started making comments about us liking each other so we turned it down a notch and kept our distance. We still talk and joke around but not as much as before.

Well it all started last week when I overheard J and K on the phone talking about some updates in their department and then J asks K if she saw his text. I asked K what the text was about and she says it was nothing.

A couple days later, I tell K I need to stop by her office to pick up some supplies my office and K volunteers to drop it off all excited.

Well today J said he was going out for lunch and I told him I was too but to another place, both next to each other only a block away. He offers to go together. Well I got held up on a call so I went to lunch late. He had already come back when I left. When I got to the restaurant, I noticed there was a car exactly like K’s but didn’t think much of it. When I went inside to pick up my food I see her smiling texting on her phone and ready to leave. She seemed nervous at first when I approached her and asked why she was all the way over here considering the office she works at is over 40 minutes away. She said she had gotten off early and was only stopping for lunch before heading home. However, it’s a chain restaurant and there are locations closer to her office. I asked her if she saw J around and she gets nervous but said no.

Well we start talking and at one point she says she started hooking up with a guy. I ask her about it and she says it’s a guy she’s known for a while and they have kept in touch but they’re reconnecting. She has even visited him at his place a few times. She said I didn’t know him but she knows him from the same professional setting she knows J from. I went back to the office to get back to work and I mention that I just saw K at the restaurant. J gets nervous and starts chocking. Thats when everything clicked. J is the guy K has been hooking up with and I’m so sad about it. I’m genuinely happy for them but I wont lie and say I’m not heartbroken.

You know I can’t have you to myself. Even though the thing I want to most is for you to be mine and for me to be yours. We know we can’t act on our feelings and we have to keep it buried, deep within.

I guess the reason why I’ve been staying by your side all this time is to see who’s the lucky woman who gets to embrace you, kiss you, and sleep next to you every night.

Every day, I hope for the moment you lose control and run to me and kiss me like you’ve never kissed anyone else before. I’m hoping it’s you because it can’t be me.
