P-Model - Grid (1992)

P-Model - Grid (1992)

Perhaps only industrial-adjacent, I felt these pioneering and quirky Japanese synth wizards should get a little love. The part at 1:33 makes my inner child feel alive.

God Bullies - All I Want is My Mamma (1988)

Killer single version blowing away the one found on the “Mama Womb Womb” LP from 1989.

Dëx Cröix - Sister Witch (1989)

Can’t find much info about this gang of late ‘80s New York goths. Catchy tune, very anthemic. Luckily they aren’t a boring Sisters of Mercy clone. Dëx Cröix released this one double-sided single in 1989 and then promptly disappeared into the night. For good.

Lydia Lunch & Clint Ruin - Clinch (1991)

Clint Ruin aka JG Thirlwell aka Foetus. Great song. Massive, driving industrial rock. Whenever Lunch collaborates with someone you know it’s gonna be good.

Wasted Youth - Good Day for a Hanging (1988)

Former LA hardcore punks go full-on crossover thrash metal, as per the times. Badass song that deserves more love. What say you?

The Hitmen - Bates Motel (1981)

The Hitmen are a long-forgotten UK new wave / post-punk act. “Bates Motel” would receive regular rotation on MTV’s Elvira Halloween specials. Hitmen singer, Ben Watkins, would eventually form the EBM-pop band The Flowerpot Men, who’d land a spot on the Ferris Bueller’s Day Off soundtrack with “Beat City.”

After the Flowerpot Men’s dissolution, they briefly changed names to Sunsonic and shortly thereafter Ben Watkins would finally receive mainstream attention when he formed his most famous project - Juno Reactor!

The Cassandra Complex - Too Stupid to Sin (1988)

The Cassandra Complex were kind of a weird band. They straddled the line somewhere between post-punk, darkwave and EBM (electronic body music).

Unfortunately for these “lost” UK post-punks, they were never really the most consistent group; however instead, scattered across their discography are some absolute bangers. Come the ‘90s they looked to KMFDM for inspiration eventually releasing their magnum opus, 1993’s “Sex and Death.”

The song here “Too Stupid to Sin” might be my favorite with those razor-sharp, sizzling guitar riffs that just don’t quit.

Their full name is actually We’ve Got A Fuzzbox and We’re Gonna Use It.

Perfect and infectious all-girl new wave candy colored British pop-punk.

Well, it doesn’t really get any more obscure than this. Cleft Palate recorded a demo in 1986 (which I’ve been unable to locate) and amazingly, produced this sick, low-budget Super 8 music video with homemade goopy gore fx. Everything about this just speaks to my dark heart. It’s almost unreal it even exists.

Early, experimental, and pretty weird 7min+ industrial rock masterpiece by these guys originally from Philly. Music video parodies Night of the Living Dead. He’s coming after you…with a knife. Gotta love when that melodic bassline kicks in.

Perhaps strangest of all, Executive Slacks found a musical guest spot on an episode of Miami Vice in 1985, featuring none other than Phil Collins!

Formerly of ‘70s punk bands F-Word and Negative Trend, the enigmatic Rik L Rik was an OG member of Southern California punk rock. In 1980 the haunting and dreary “The Outback” was released on the various artists compilation ‘Rodney on the ROQ.’ Perhaps most surprisingly, a music video was created for this masterpiece. Sadly Rik passed away far too young at age 39, never fully realizing his potential. “The Outback” gives us a brief glimpse into what could have been.
