I just launched a sister app to Card Game Encyclopedia — GameNight Picker

Hey r/cardgames — some of you may have downloaded my Card Game Encyclopedia app!!! Thank you, genuinely.

Today I launched a sister app called GameNight Picker. Different angle: instead of cataloguing games, it picks one for you.

Tell it who's playing (2, 3-4, 5-6, 7+), how much time you've got (15 min to 90+), and the vibe you want (co-op, family, party) — it picks a game. 40 hand-curated games to start, all with honest descriptions (not scraped from BGG), proper age ranges, and what to actually expect at the table.

Built for the moment when you're staring at your shelf trying to decide.

I've been playing Catan for a couple of years now and I feel like I hit a wall with my strategy. I start okay but by mid game I always seem to get blocked in and can't expand while everyone else races to 10 points.

I know the basics — diversify resources, don't rely on one number, get ports early. But I still struggle when more experienced players start cutting off expansion routes early.

Any tips for thinking more strategically about initial placement or mid game pivots when you're getting blocked? Genuinely open to any advice!

So I finally did it.....After learning to code basically from scratch, I just got my first iOS app approved on the App Store and I'm honestly still a bit shocked it worked. 

The idea came from a really simple frustration — every time my family sits down for a card game night someone pulls out a game nobody remembers the rules to, and we end up spending 20 minutes on Google piecing together half-answers from random websites.

So I built Card Game Encyclopedia. It's a free app with 100+ card games all in one place — full rules, strategy tips, how-to-play videos, difficulty ratings, the works. Everything from Poker and Solitaire to more obscure stuff like Tichu, Skat, Hanafuda and Briscola. I've learned so much from researching all these games, also how I've been playing so many games very very very wrong (lol).

My favourite feature is the Suggest a Game screen — you pick how many players you have and what difficulty you want and it recommends something random. Really useful when nobody can agree on what to play. 

Biggest lessons from building it: 

- Expo and React Native are genuinely beginner friendly. But honestly I still have a lot to learn, and am actually unsure if I understand any of it.

- The App Store submission process is way more involved than I expected 

- Having an actual reason to build something makes you push through the hard parts

I'm a hobbyist developer and card game enthusiast who got frustrated that there was no single place to look up rules for card games quickly during game night. So I spent the last few months building one.

Card Game Encyclopedia is a free iOS app with 100+ card games from around the world including classics like Bridge, Cribbage, Euchre and Pinochle, all the way to more obscure games like Tichu, Skat, Briscola, Hanafuda and Koi-Koi.
