Cultured vs Pop Cultured: Cats

I called my cat Mr. Mistoffelees today because we call him Mr. Fee a lot, and that felt like a funny way to expand his name to make my husband laugh.

My husband thought I said Mephistopheles, referencing Faust, and was delighted + surprised by my reference until I was deeply confused and explained I was referencing Cats, the Musical - which he has never thought about once in his life.

I learned about Faust, he watched the 24 fouettés of Mr. Mistoffelees. It’s a good Sunday.

Picky tastes with months to decide.

We’re expecting and due in December! I have a very specific taste in names: easy to spell just from hearing it, ones that won’t need to be clarified, but not overwhelmingly common. I grew up as the only person with my name in my immediate social circle — to date, I’ve met four other people with my name — whereas my husband has a very common name. It’s important to me that her name is unique and lets her be a little spunky, while also not sounding like a name that only suits a kid.

Last name is Polish, two syllables, and starts with L.

Dislikes: alliteration (no L names), J names (we’re both J names and don’t want our whole family to share the same initials). This is also petty, but no Shakespearean names.

Likes:
Cora - one we agree we like enough to name her
Elise / Audrey - we both like these, but aren’t in love.
Clara / Claire - he likes more than me
Darcy / Greta / Sadie - I love, he hates

Honorable Mentions:
Lily - actually perfect, but we don’t like the alliteration.
Sylvie / Sylvia - honorific name after my grandmother; my favorite, but he doesn’t prefer it
