Hi! I'm the person at the Whitworth who's being told my rent is going up by $400. Can you recommend any apartments owned by local landlords/property management, and not by some disgusting corporate machine?

Thanks! I hate private equity and I hate AI and I hate that the state of antitrust law is so weak in this country that these companies have been able to hoard property to the point of monopolization!

This has been a learning moment from me. If I end up moving, I think going forward I am going to do my best to avoid ever giving money to companies like these ever again, and I think that collectively we should do our best to not feed these monsters (although I know that's easier said than done and that not all of us have the option).

Landlord wants to raise rent by nearly $400 ($1640 to $2020). Is this normal? What do I even do?

I'm gonna try to negotiate this, but this makes my place entirely unaffordable. Also, it makes my apartment above the going rate for most places of comparable size/quality by $200-350 dollars.

I've only been here a year, I like it, I want to stay. I've never had anyone try to raise rent on me this much though.

UPDATE/BLAST TIME:

I LIVE AT THE WHITWORTH.

I'm so far having trouble negotiating it down, which is why I've decided to share which apartment complex this is. I'll preface this with saying that, again, the on-the-ground staff here are absolutely lovely and very helpful, and that the complex has been a nice place to live. However, the complex is owned by Capital Square, a real estate investment firm. Their properties are managed by their in-house management firm, Capital Square Living. Capital Square Living utilizes AIRM to set pricing on their units. AIRM is a revenue management tool by RealPage, which was just implicated in the recent $216m settlement which one of the commenters below mentioned.

While the staff here is lovely, their hands are absolutely tied by their obstinate and shareholder-obsessed higher-ups, who blindly rely on their AI tools to squeeze as much money out of housing markets as possible, with zero regard for individual relationships with tenants.

It doesn't matter that I like the place, it doesn't matter that the Whitworth staff genuinely want to treat residents well and keep increases between 5-10%. The higher-ups only see the numbers spit out by the revenue management tools, and they only care about what those tools recommend, regardless of how reasonable or unreasonable it is, and regardless of long-term considerations such as anticipated changes in the local market or nurturing a solid reputation. If on a given day the tool reports a particular number, that's it, that's what they'll offer.

It's also incredibly interesting to me that, in light of the recent court challenges to the use of certain revenue management tools, that Capital Square is still utilizing them, despite the fact that are being exposed as gigantic legal/financial liabilities and potentially violating anti-trust law.

Current status: awaiting to hear back from the Whitworth staff, as they're attempting to reach out to the higher-ups on my behalf. I may yet get a better deal, but given how corporate the management company is, odds are very slim that they will give me a fair deal when they could just as easily let me go and get someone else to take my place for an extra $200 or $300 a month than what they'd get from me.

Acupuncturist says I have a tension in the spot just below my sternum/top of my abdomen. What muscle or tissue is this? How might I target it?

I thought I was pretty aware of the pain/aches/tense spots around my body, but I was totally unaware of this one, oops. Anyone else have tension here or know what’s up with this spot? I really struggle with relaxing muscles in my abdomen, even when I can identify the spot and really focus on it. Any success releasing this spot? How do I work on it?
