Staffing shortages

Past week at my job has been unusually hard. Our office is down two two officers (DHS) up front which apparently is the minimum allowed. Late last week we only had one on occasion. Others have been put on temporary TDY due to shortfalls in OTHER offices in the airport or have extended training. I normally send certain targeting information on certain cargo I find to specific officers, but they're not in our office and the ones that are are too overwhelmed with other responsibilities to handle it so I just leave it. I hope that we get more staff back this week. I sometimes find cargo that could genuinely be illegal or in violation of sanctions, but that is very rare. The senior agricultural specialist has been alone for the past few days because two of her colleagues are on sick leave and one is TDY for another month. I went to her office to give her some normal targeting and she was absolutely livid about not getting the staffing she needs.

Coworker was the most annoying person I've ever met.

Volunteered part-time for a local historical society for two years. Another volunteer would interject himself into other people's personal event recollections despite never being there. The head docent was a very nice elderly lady. One day the volunteer said he was leaving for the day. Once he was out of earshot the head docent said "Thank God!"

Baggage and gear recommendations for South Africa/Kruger/Vic Falls/Chobe Trip?

Considering South African Safari next year, this one: https://www.gate1travel.com/tour/south-africa-tour-11desszavfa27.aspx?fbclid=IwVERTSASp8idleHRuA2FlbQEwAGFkaWQBqzYt4gYf4HNydGMGYXBwX2lkDDM1MDY4NTUzMTcyOAABHiQ-RbABc5SQO4a5dljd7QcMwURo8gdIZJlxgynz8HENkppsmv1xwJuOY_pp_aem_YWdncwtGuu2L2NYzKX_saVEDeHHm&sfnsn=mo#itinerary

What luggage and gear is recommended? Already saved cargo pants, light button-down shirts, a wide-brimmed hat, clip-on sunglasses, SPF 60 sweat-resistant sunblock and waterproof hiking shoes. Do I need water purification tablets? What vaccines and where to go for anti-malaria prophylaxis?

Denied a federal job because I sounded "evasive."

I had an embarrassing incident about 17 years ago which cost me a job. It stemmed from an attempted relationship that failed because of my anxiety. I'm still embarrassed by it and told that to the interviewer along with my anxiety. I did my best to be totally honest. You would think he'd put 2 and 2 together but no.

How could I handle this?

I was placed in a job role because the previous employee was not working out. I occasionally hear from other employees that they're very glad I'm there and not the previous employee. It's a federal agency and it's my understanding that the employee is still here just not in my office. What should I do if I encounter the employee and am asked about the job they used to fill, the office or what is being said about them?
