I don’t know who needs to hear this but clear your PD cache in the app

I got an iOS update notification that there wasn’t enough space on my phone to install the new update, which I thought was strange because I’m mostly cloud based and very, very rarely have files offline.

I did get back from a trip where I took a lot of videos in 4K so I was sure that was the culprit…but nope, not really. After deleting a bunch I was still pretty short of the 17.33 GB free space needed.

Turns out Proton Drive was taking up like 10 GB of cache data. I even went to check if I downloaded some massive file offline by mistake. Nope, not a single file downloaded offline. It was all just cache taking up a ton of space in third behind Messages and Photos.

I’d love to say it improved performance on my phone or in Proton Drive but it largely seems to have done nothing but allow me to download the latest iOS version.

I did not do this, but there’s an option to clear your cache from the iPhone Storage setting. I deleted the cache from within the Proton Drive app. It’s probably the same thing, but reader beware if you do one over the other.

How do you know *they* influence the ideas?

I’m confused about the English pronoun they. I get that the ideas are plural with “le idee” but where in this sentence does it tell me they influence the ideas?

If “le” is the pronoun meaning they then how do you differentiate it from belonging to the ideas being plural and instead means they?

I hope that makes sense. I think I’m confusing myself more the more I think about it.

How is any of this acceptable?

I’ve TRIED sending feedback in on this Proton Pass issue for months now. But not only does their feedback form never work correctly, but then Proton VPN literally stalls by the time I can make any progress submitting the issue for Proton Pass. I’ve also tried to report that issue and it goes nowhere. Even when they’ve responded, they’ve only asked me for screenshots/recordings which I already provided.

What the hell are any of us supposed to do? Is it just time to leave?

Bent Wheel, WWYD?

Some of you may remember be from my last post:

Help: New-ish Commuter, Long Time Problem With Flats

Well this is sort of an update post. In my last post, although I didn’t specify, I was mostly complaining about my front tire getting flat all the time. I think I discovered that although my tires are rated for 120 max psi, I think I was inflating them too much to 110. I commute with quite a lot of gear, and I weigh about 40 lbs more than when I bought that bike 9 or 10 years ago.

Anyway, this post isn’t about my front tire, but my back wheel. I started actually inspecting my tires more closely, more often thanks to many of you.

On my new issued, I have no idea when this happened between Wednesday night and Thursday evening, but on Thursday evening after riding to work that morning with zero complaints or flats, I went and put it on the rack to top off the tires. I did a quick inspection and realized one of the spokes are broken and the entire wheel is bent and rubbing up against the brakes. The right brake lever movement was extremely limited, basically frozen in place. I couldn’t spin the wheel smoothly at all. Left brake and front tires were fine of course.

My office has a pretty barebones bike maintenance stand with a pump and standard tools. I tried bending the wheel back with my hands and repositioning the brakes. I think I made it worse but just wanted to fix it enough to get home. The ride home was rough. I was definitely pedaling twice as hard and going half the distance on one of the hottest days of the year. Anyway…

Similar to my last post, I come here asking for an experienced take since I’m pretty new to all this in practice. My first thought is to take it to a shop, have the wheels totally replaced—both front and back to eliminate the issues in my last post—and have the brakes adjusted again. Do I have the right idea? What would or have you done in this circumstance?

I ask because a lot of people in my last post understandably told me to do a lot of things myself like changing flats. I’m not super mechanically intelligent, but I am more able than the average person I’d say. I’m probably just more lazy than anything. But, I kind of am just posting this to get advice from more experienced individuals. Appreciate any insight and experience you can share.

Help: New-ish Commuter, Long Time Problem with Flats

I seem to have terrible luck with bikes. Every one I’ve bought seems to have one consistent, yet unexplainable problem like a chain that pops off or something. I say new-ish commuter because I have only commuted a handful of times over about ten years because I keep running into an issue with flats on my current one. While I’m not super consistent with commuting to work, if nothing else I’m determined to resolve this issue.

Realistically, I get a flat probably 1 in every 3 or 4 rides. I’ve taken it to several shops. I bought Gator Skins a few years ago and put them on myself, but honestly have only ridden on them mayyybe 10 times. They got a couple flats in those 10 rides too. Nevertheless, my complaints fall on deaf ears. They tell me something probably poked it and flew out, maybe it was a bristle from the street sweep, or something to that effect.

The frustrating thing is I just got the flat fixed last month, the guy said nothing was wrong with the wheels and the tires are still pretty new. With that and a tune up it was pushing $150 with tax and all that. After literally only riding to work three times, it goes flat the fourth time on my way 30 min ride to an appointment. I found a shop on the way and that was like $30 bucks.

I keep paying for tubes or someone to fix my flats, but this can’t possibly be every one else’s experience. I just don’t want to be anxious every time I get on my bike that it might be the time I’m late, walking my bike to work.

Ultimately I’m curious, how often are you guys getting flats? Do you have any advice? Anyone else have this issue and have some unexpected solution? Are some bikes just cursed and should I get a more reliable one?

Bike: GT Corsa Two
Work commute = 59 min, 10 miles one-way, almost entirely bike paths

CONAFan YouTube Episodes?

I recently switched from Spotify to YouTube premium. Having Conan’s podcasts were a make or break, but over the past few months I’ve noticed CONAFan episodes are either uploaded much later than other platforms, or lately they don’t seem to be uploaded at all.

Also, kind of strangely, on Spotify the Fan episodes are uploaded to the Friend podcast, but on YT they are two separate podcasts.

I have a feeling I’m just being stupid and missing something obvious, but I tried looking into it and came up with nothing. Anyone know what’s going on with the YouTube episodes?

ETA: it’s now 4:52 PM Eastern, and says it published 18 minutes ago (4:34 PM EST). Other commenters said it published hours ago…I’m still a little confused but ::shrug::

Hey, are you otherwise healthy guys almost always mildly in pain?

Despite my following complaints, I like to think I’m a pretty healthy guy. I haven’t smoked or drank in a couple years now. I used to be in great shape in my 20s, but like many, it fell to the wayside of life. I am orbiting closer towards 40 now, bit of a dad bod (but not a dad), and just pretty average stats all around…

But I feel like I’m just always in mild pain these days. Not enough to say much normally, but enough to let out a big exhale of grief or a wince of intolerance. Like, even laying down I can just feel a mild, generalized soreness on my right hip and leg, and ankles from walking all day…getting up isn’t difficult, but it’s certainly not a joy ride. And I can pretty easily touch my toes, tie my shoes, walk up flights of stairs…

I’m sure plenty of you might be thinking “you should talk your doctor”…but it’s not like that, I don’t think. It’s like a dull roar all the time, never quite in one area but spots I can identify.

I started doing pushups again recently (like 10-20 once or twice a day), and now every time I extend my right shoulder a certain way, I get the sense I’ve done more damage than good. Hands and fingers are starting to remind me arthritis is around the corner…And I’ve felt this get worse over the years, but not in more intense way, just more often and prolonged.

Anyway, my point isn’t so much to complain about all my aches and pains. I am grateful to an extent about my remaining flexibility and mobility, but I guess I’m just curious if this is what other guys over 30 experience every day…and if this gets worse with age? How the hell do you do it in your 40s, 50s, 60s!? With kids?!

If I take a few Advil, I can get a few pops out of my neck or back and feel good for a little while, but I’m not supposed to do that often…so I’m just confused.

I’m really starting to ramble so I’ll stop here, but this sub crossed my mind when I was wondering if this is super common, or maybe I do need to see a doctor (which I do, but not for this). Anyway, hope you all are relatively pain free.

ETA: reading other posts, yes I drink plenty of water.

Game Pigeon Messages

I play Game Pigeon with a friend and I’d like to make an If statement to play a specific sound when he sends me a text that contains a Game Pigeon message only. I can’t figure out any way to do this. I’ve tried extracting text but haven’t had any luck. Anyone know a way to do this?

Workaround for saving to folder without FaceID?

I have a few shortcuts that save text or documents to specific folders.

For example, I have an automation that triggers a shortcut when I arrive to work. That saves the time and my location to a .txt document so I have a record of when I arrive to my office building (I have a flex schedule I need to track). It does a number of other things (i.e., speaks the time, pauses and mutes audio after ~2 min when I usually arrive to my desk). It also saves a new document each week so I can easily look them up.

The main downside is that I *have* to be looking at my phone to authenticate FaceID for the most important part of logging the timestamp and location.

The problem I’d like to solve is that I don’t want to disable FaceID for security reasons but I want to find a way to save the text without needing to authenticate it while I’m literally walking into the office. I want it to be automated in such a way it doesn’t need my input or interaction.

I also want to maintain a precise time I arrive in case my employer decides to compare my timecard one day. Trying to delay the save, like when I get to my desk, has proven to be unreliable. I know from this subreddit and experience that Shortcuts is a little unstable with time delays.

My next idea is to add calendar events but I don’t love that idea because I have other shortcuts that need similar FaceID authentication and I prefer not to clutter my calendar, but it’s an option I might employ if bypassing FaceID isn’t possible.

I don’t need specific help so much as I’m curious if anyone has thoughts or workarounds for similar ideas. Kind of just brainstorming and don’t have any elegant solutions in mind.
