20mm f/65 pinhole body cap lens. Making full use of the full frame sensor with this bad boy, and it’s a truly pocketable camera!

Testing Zeiss and Leica M mount glass on the S9

Found a used TTArtisan M to L mount adapter and thought I’d give it a go with some of my M mount glass from my film Leica M2. The adapter is actually really well made despite what some reviews would suggest.

Zeiss C biogon 35 f2.8: As I suspected, shooting at a flat wall, you can see at the very corners the blur I’ve heard about. Gets better stopping down the lens and by f 11-16 it’s pretty much gone. For snapshots / adding effects like vignette for street you’d probably get away with it.

Zeiss planar 50 f2: very nice lens. Handles well on the S9. It’s metal but doesn’t feel heavy as the m mount adapter is so short compared to SLR adapters. Lovely bokeh, whole frame even wide open is perfect. Because it’s so sharp focus peaking is really easy, but as for any MF lens troublesome for moving subject.

Leica 90mm f2.8 Elmarit: (Main reason I got this adapter - to try out 90mm FOV on the S9 before getting anything in portrait range).
It looks a bit long from the pictures but surprisingly it handles pretty well and doesn’t feel heavy or that cumbersome at all.
I found this very easy to get good focus. Portraits have a nice background blur and separation, and the rendering is quite pleasing, not razor sharp but not Vaseline soft.

The last image of the swan was taken with the Elmarit. It’s a 5mp crop of the 24MP full frame image, shot wide open as it was swimming towards me. I was not expecting much but was pleasantly surprised.

TLDR; I’m pleasantly surprised by M mount lenses on the S9 (except wide angle).

Tamron adaptall 70-210 f3.8-4 on Lumix S9

Pleasantly surprised with this vintage adaptall lens. I already had it in my collection but it can be had for £10 on eBay. It has some light fungus / haze but otherwise seems to be in good shape.

Shot the moon in 96MP high Rez mode on my Lumix S9, couple of exposures stacked to give a bit more detail. I thought it was going to be a blurry mess but very happy with results!

Black and White shots on the S9 + 18-40 kit lens

I used to shoot a lot of black and white film a few years ago, then develop and darkroom print myself.

FP4+ was my favourite for high contrast and not overpowering grain. I’ve tried to replicate this on the S9 using the Leica monochrome style JPEG and bumping contrast slightly in post.

Hope you enjoy!

Most photos are with the kit lens 18-40, for convenience while out and about with a token appearance of a giant 180mm f2.8 Nikon adapted to get a closer view of a castle.

18-40 and S9 Astrophotography

Hi all, I’ve done a bit of Astro about a decade ago with dx Nikon camera and a tokina wide angle zoom lens.
Hoping to do a bit (weather permitting) on upcoming holiday. I’ve the 40-18 and 40f2.
From memory ideally I’d need a f2.8 / faster lens on the wide side to get enough Milky Way detail, but I’m reluctant to buy a one use lens.
Has anyone got good results from the kit zoom?
Does the full frame sensor make up for the slower glass?
Keen to hear others experiences ta

S9 and adapted Nikon 180 f2.8

Tried out an adapted 180mm f2.8 prime Nikon lens at a nature reserve today, in preparation for a wildlife boat trip coming up. The idea is to get a few seconds of ‘context’ video to accompany the vlog of the boat trip.

I was very surprised by how well the IBIS works even with an adapted lens, and how straight forward manual focus is with focus peaking and the magnifier. Last clip was entirely handheld in very strong wind, other clips were either monopod or rested on windowsill of a hide.

It may seem like an odd combination pairing the S9 with such a large lens, but the S9 is my travel/dad cam and the benefit is a light camera 90% of the time and for the once in a blue moon I want some more reach I’ve proved you can stick a giant lens on it and it’s doable!

Microphone for family cam setup

Hi, had my S9 for a couple of weeks now (testing out before a family holiday with my toddler).

Picked up the 18-40 and 40f2 as a lightweight/fuss free setup but from my initial testing I think the mic could do with some improvement:

I can clearly hear me (and my breath sounds), but my boy toddling around is like a little mouse.

I’d like to add a mic to the setup but looking at suggestions in other threads they’re still quite bulky (mk200 etc) and it takes away from the discrete P&S look that gets me away with filming in places that they don’t allow “professional filming” to take place.

I looked into the DJI wireless which is very discrete atop the hotshoe, but where would I put the transmitter? If it’s on my boy he’ll pull that off and break it almost immediately, if it’s on me won’t it just have the same effect as onboard microphone?

Cheers for ideas in advance!

Very loud tape mechanism

Hi all, I bought this cheap little radio for my son to play around with, but I’ve noticed on playback the mechanism is super noisy! I’ve taken it apart to investigate and made sure all the gears are lubed (my first thought) but doesn’t seem to be the cause.

Belts do appear to be sound and not completely degraded.

Is this just how these little players are? I just can’t remember players being quite this noisy when I had them when I were a lad.

Thanks

Tone arm not returning to rest fully

Hi all,
Any ideas what I can do to fix this problem? Denon DP-300F I’ve had from new for a few years.

I’ve looked through the service manual but can’t see anything about this.
It wouldn’t normally be a problem however it’s more likely to get knocked off now it doesn’t rest properly.

I’ve already lost one stylus to my 2yr old and will have to replace it, just don’t want a new one to have the same fate especially as it doesn’t come with a protective cover like the original.

Thanks in advance!
