I have a new favourite word ~ Mendacity ~

/ mɛnˈdeɪʃəs, mɛnˈdæsɪtɪ /

 1. the tendency to be untruthful

 2. a falsehood

🇬🇧 English
____________

This word has been used several times in my audiobook and at first I thought I was mishearing the word "audacity" even though the context didn't quite suit it. Eventually I decided to look it up and see if what I thought I was hearing was a real word. And WOW. I have a new favourite word. It feels like it should be a joke, a trick, a funny play on words, perhaps a malapropism or a portmanteau. But it's real.

*Personal political viewpoint against toxic masculinity and misogyny incoming:*

And it's just too ***juicy***. I can't believe feminists (or even just any sensible, educated spokesperson) haven't been using this word in every post, article and sentence regarding men who gaslight, male politicians, incels etc.

Of course it's not *actually* a gendered word... but it's just too PERFECT not to be hijacked, adopted and incorporated into the brand messaging by women for women. I love it. I can't wait to use it.

The second slide is one that came up on a series that tries to help you remember the definitions of lesser words in an effort to help you use them more often I guess. It’s not meant to be a joke, but I found it bloody hilarious.

Unexpectedly funny lines/moments…

The whole portrait scene is superb but the bit that catches me off guard and therefore makes me laugh even harder is >!Rosemary having an expected coughing fit but then screaming out “My sciatica!!”!< 😆 Omg, I was not expecting that.

Two more really caught me off guard:

- >!Patricia user the taser on the bully!<

- >!Wyck being ever so serious in describing how to deal with the seahag. I don’t know what I was expecting, but it was not a perfectly timed hilariously serious instruction to find a chest and lock oneself in it for three days. The absurdity was perfect.!<

Which ones really caught you by surprise?

Question about The Mule, Bayta, Toran Mallow

MAJOR SPOILERS FOR SEASON 3. TV SHOW ONLY ALTHOUGH BOOK READERS MAY HAVE SOME INSIGHT.

Hoping this is far enough down to avoid spoilers appearing in the preview….

 1. Okay… so we know who the puppeteer is… do we know who the puppet was? Why he was chosen? At first I wondered if he was the abandoned sibling, is that abandonment didn’t really ever take place and if neglected child took the baby with them…? I also wondered at one point if Magnifico was the abandoned baby as his love for the Mule was so deep seated. And I guess, does it matter? But could the puppeteer have used anyone as a puppet? How did the puppeteer control the puppet over planetary distances? Tellum needed her people nearby and don’t seem able to occupy more than one body at a time. Also, the conversations Bayta had with Magnifico about being good at making people like them seemed odd with hindsight. Did he really not know who Bayta was? Or why the Mule was the way he was? Is that why his mind is childlike? It’s been overly controlled and manipulated? Maybe the first one warped into the love for the

Mule

 1. ?
 2. Why did the Mule cause physical damage and pain to Toran Mallow? And not manage to take over his mind? Was it because the “Mule” wasn’t really trying and just being performative? Who was really in control there? Did the puppeteer want one single person to love them honestly? Was he permitted to escape? Why send him in to begin with??

Doonas/Quilts/Blankets on the couch with TV & Bludging vs Bingeing.

I’ve read two books recently, one set in the 70s and the other mid 90s where the characters were cold and unable to sleep. So each pulled her doona (top bed cover) off the bed, took it to the lounge room and watched half a movie until she felt tired then dragged the doona, and herself, back to bed. I felt such a strong wave of nostalgia. Pre-phones this was what we did!!

When I was home sick from school too, I’d drag my doona out to our couch and watch Aerobics Oz Style, Murder She Wrote and various cooking shows. I could be sick as a dog but under a doona on the couch I was in pure LUXURY. Early days of hangovers were spent drinking Gatorade under a doona on the couch begging someone to get me KFC while I watched infomercials and got this close 👌to buying an ironing shoe, microdermabrasion moisturizer containing diamonds ground soft, like sugar or the Chuck Norris home gym center.

I have various blankets and throws on my couch now. And use my phone in bed when I’m sick and when I’m not including right now. But it’s not the same. I think it still felt quite luxurious when I first started watching my laptop in bed… that freedom to bring a small tv screen to the doona’s home had an air of gluttonous sloth about it, lazy but so worth it.

And we’d say things like, “I spent all day bludging on the couch.” And I think this was so different to bingeing shows like we do now. Bludging didn’t have to involve tv for one, but if it did I think it was more the channel hopping, only half paying attention while day dreaming or snoozing that made it bludging instead of smashing through multiple episodes of the same show on purpose and at your leisure. A Foxtel marathon of double eps or a Saturday making of The Simpson’s wasn’t be same as bludging. And you could bludgeon in bed; in the garden, at work it even around the shops. But bludging was done best under a doona, imo.

What's a clothing brand everybody knew and used to wear back in the day that would be (almost) unheard of to recent generations?

Swiped this question from AskReddit because it’s something I really do get nostalgic about. In high school I walked this thin line of being a teen whose fashion choices were judged harshly by my peers, as per most teens’ experience, having a limited budget, legit not giving a shit about brand names unless I liked the product and my desire to look unique and like ‘myself’ while also looking attractive and adhering to our school dress code five days a week.

Back then anything cheap was derogatorily referred to as a Kmart job. Surf brands were insanely popular where I lived despite there being literally no surf. And Mambo was King!! Although the range for women and girls was limited.

I also used to collect the clothing labels of those old bands and blutac them to my wall as they were little mini pieces of art.

Mambo, Brother’s Nielsen, Mossimo were three big ones for me.

New poster, clues/strategy suggestions over answers please…

Hi, I’m brand new here. I’ve been watching YouTube tutorials trying to up my Sudoku game but I’m stuck on this one and can’t work out what to do next. And when I say stuck, I mean for several days now. Today I eliminated one more candidate but it still didn’t leave to anything being filled in.

I’d really love if someone could tell me what strategy I could use to make my next move, and then give me the chance to find it and solve the puzzle.

I have been unable to find any more of the following intermediate strategies, but maybe I’m wrong..?

X wing, XY Wing, Skycraper, Turbot Fish, Two-String Kite, Empty Rectangle, Swordfish.

I’m excited for your suggestions and learning new techniques or improving on finding patterns I’ve missed!!

Things I love that were just kind of left hanging and we may never know… and what are yours?

As several people have said, this is a modern horror comedy and not necessarily a mystery puzzle box show where everything is going to make sense by the end. I’m a Severance fan and have been boggled by the level of detail in that but this show is a lot of fun and honestly, more relaxing because I don’t think it has the same density of hidden treasure or layers upon layers of meaning. Some of it is just for fun.

My fave fun bits that don’t make sense outside of a supernaturally cursed island:

- the Boogeyman seemed to go under an autopsy and nothing of note was discovered or discussed 😆

- everyone is just chill that Patricia followed that corpse around with a shotgun until it was a pile of dust

- people really think Patricia is “so weird” that no one actually questions her headdress. Even the outspoken Rosemary only had some qualms.

- where is the guy who was really lovely to Patricia at the party? Was he real? Did he really like her?

- Tom saw a decayed dead body on the crawl space, the Police Chief didn’t… or was not inclined to throughly check.

- the Inn Keeper struggled with ten seconds alone in the Captain’s Suite but after 30 seemed to silently trash the place. The blip in space/time is brushed off. 😆

- the games at the Inn!! 😆😆😆

- some people can hear the Church bells and some can’t

- the poor Shaman just getting sucked up into the weather

- one of the mayoral administrations decided to make two videos, a “So you’re a sacrifice” video (such a shame Tory McClure wasn’t available) and a “How to get the most out of your sacrifices” video.

- WTF is with the welcome video at the Inn? The tourism department is terrible. No wonder Tom has so much work to do.

- why did Tom run for Mayor of a town he seems to hate so much on an island he despises for good reason and full of people he cares next to nothing for?! Just to prevent one of them being Mayor? But no one contested him… and why not?! Too scared. Hilarious.

- also I think my fave bit of dialogue is in reference to Warren when Patrica says she and Wyck moved him and Tom is flabbergasted asking, “WHY did you move him?” And at this point Patricia is just so done with it all and is so casual as she’s says, “Because he’s still alive.” And Tom is surprised but not even horrified at that point. Fucking hilarious. What a super fun show.

I love saying Caboolture

Caboolture (/kəˈbʊltʃər/) is a town and suburb in the City of Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia. The Gubbi Gubbi people are the traditional custodians of the area now known as Caboolture. The name Kabultur is derived from the Yugarabul dialect meaning "place of the carpet snake".

And I just love saying it. It runs off tongue like a steam train sound,
Caboolture, Caboolture, Caboolture, choo-choo!! 🚂💨

I just had to share this with people who also love words.

Demerzel, the moon, the emotion… what a ride.

A gush post.

Last week I finally watched season 3. Yeah I know, I’m slow to catch up. But it’s such a huge show, literally galactic and I knew I needed to be in the right headspace to get back into it. But far out the show is amazing. I was pulled back into the universe so completely and amazed at the where the story took us.

Everything preordained being so switched up made for such an exciting adventure. But that last episode really got me in the feels.

I’ve been mourning Demerzel since the last episode. Unable to fully comprehend how the next season could go on without her. Hating that something so precious as this ancient individual, this unique, rare and precious being could be destroyed by the selfishness and shallowness of a stupid old white man grasping at smoke to feel “Consequential”. But thank goodness for Reddit and the wonderful dedicated and devoted fans who posted and shared about the Morse code message. Oh my. Oh my. Oh my!! The hope I feel!!

However, in my real time devastation as the final scenes unfolded, I admit it took me a ridiculous amount of time to clock that the planet behind Kalle was Earth and they were on OUR MOON!! Luna!! As recognition hit, my heart felt such love and fondness for our planet. And I’m so excited that Earth has entered the series.

What a ride.

The Audacity & Hypergnosis… am I missing a joke?

Hey, neurodivergent Aussie here and I’m wondering if I’m missing a joke, reference or layered meaning behind the business name, “Hypergnosis”. At first I thought it was just classic big tech name nonsense but then when they talk about naming a new thing they’re like, “Yeah spell it with the Gn like in Hypergnosis.” Is there something special about the GN part? It’s not his initials. Or Hamish’s, so it’s not a tribute. Any ideas? Or is it just name nonsense as I initially suspected?

I swear my typos are INVISIBLE or DON’T EXIST until after I hit post/send/publisn ;)

Then when I hit the go button in whatever form it takes, I glance at my sent text and see so many typos. How is this possible?

I try to proofread my own work but I tink because I “know” what it says, I don’t “see” what’s been typed.

I hate looking illiterate and I usually trust that these days people don’t judge and assume autocorrect fail or typing on a tiny phone keyboard slip or fumble. But I am _**constantly surprised_** by it in a way I feel only ADHDers can be surprised by thier own repeated behaviour. 😂😂😂

Anyone else have this issue?

PS: The title typo was on purpose. (Unless there’s more than one). Any others in this post **did not exist** prior to hitting Post. I corrected so many along the way, surely I got them all…? And if I see them after hitting post I’m NOT coming back to fix them as an honest demonstration of my conundrum.

Edited - only to add, I should have mentioned I don’t really use a computer. My job doesn’t require one. So I use my phone for everything including this post. And Apple iOS autocorrect is borderline useless these days. I don’t know what changes the made but it’s been unintuitive and unintelligent for several years now.

I often test and plan the colours carefully but I just winged it with this one. And I think it worked out just lovely. ✌️😊👍
