New to 40k, as I continue to learn the history, I am not sure who I should be mad at.

With a universe such as LOTR it's pretty easy to point at Sauron and be like, that's the bad guy and Hobbits are these generally sweet little fellas. In 40k, the Hobbits would seem nice but then you learn that they are terribly racist and enjoy ripping apart dwarves for sport.

I'm realizing the emperor's story is mostly propaganda and the imperium is way too big to be managed properly.

I'm really trying to love someone in this universe but they are making it really hard. Everyone seems to be a dickhead which is entertaining and funny in and of itself with how terrible everyone is.

I'm gravitating towards the Salamanders but I've been burned before and am cautiously optimistic - I'm sure I'll find out they like sacrificing babies or some shit lol.

In 40k who is Sauron and who are the Hobbits?

Within the world of 40k, do they realize how sick they all look?

Like are they intentionally focusing on aesthetics in-world? Because many things in 40k go beyond pure function and just seem to look badass for no other reason than to flex and aura farm and the space marines just seem so pragmatic that having artisans and designers, and really a whole class of people dedicated to the arts seems kinda funny to me given how fucking brutal that world is.

They act like I committed an unforgivable crime.

I made a snarky comment about someone's comment about some shelving literally years ago. You'd think they'd give me another opportunity to contribute to their precious subreddit. I genuinely feel bad for them because their lives must be so miserable they need to live out a power fantasy on an internet forum.
