MG5 - battery not full, charger connected - but rejecting charge (so says the charger)

Hello,

I have the older style 2022 MG5 (without the app).

A few times now when connected to my home charger it just refuses to charge.

The charger reports that the vehicle is not requesting a charge.

Usually if I notice and go out, unlock it and disconnect the cable then reinsert it starts up and plays nice.

Sometimes it does it mid way through a charging process - sometimes the charge is rejected immediately when the charger starts.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

18.9.1 - Auth changes, Sunday Saver Auto Enrolment and various tweaks and bug fixes. Now available.

I've just pushed the most substantial rewrite to the integration since I originally built it. All seems smooth in testing (and I've been using the substantial changes for over 2 weeks) - but please do raise concerns if and when you find them.

See the full release notes here for details:

https://github.com/stevekirtley/HomeAssistant-EDFEnergy/releases/tag/18.9.1

Opportunities to support the ongoing library development:

A few people have asked about becoming GitHub sponsors - I have to be approved/verified before that option can be added - it is in progress, but timescales could be anything from days to weeks it seems.

Sunday Saver - anyone not opted in yet?

Hello,

If anyone is eligible for, but has not yet opted in, Sunday Saver (for July) can you drop me a comment/message?

I'm looking for a couple of volunteers to test a new auto enrolment feature (and enrolled my account as part of the alpha test!).

Thanks,
Steve

Teaser of next release.

🤔

Curious. The note says that EDF Intend to add an API key to the online accounts at some stage - but there appears to be one already in place on this developer's test version.

(this release is currently a very early alpha - it is unlikely to land this month, unless the heatwave goes and my brain wakes up with it).

Who's punishing the grid this World Cup freebie?

Drawing a pretty consistent 14kw here - didn't get things organised soon enough to have the the tumble dryer ready to go - but car charging and house battery topping up for free.
Dishwasher on.

In my slightly more obsessive moment I did plug in my electric toothbrush and shaver (usually needs charging twice a year). Neither made the dials move much!

Today's features / procrastination

A few new bits of functionality today:

EDF Panel updated to show:
- Sunday Saver status & next free energy slot

- World Cup Free Leccie - next scheduled slot

I've also added functionality that should automatically extend the free electricity from 2 to 3 hours if England or Scotland go to extra time beyond the group stages.

Enjoy.

People who know more about football…

… how likely is it that an England or Scotland game will go to extra time during the World Cup do we think?

Needing to re-authenticate. A seeming limit of the EDF API... I've asked them to look to see if they can make things better.

A quick update on the EDF Home Assistant integration disconnecting / needing re-authentication.

A few people have reported that the integration regularly loses access to their EDF data and then needs logging in again. I’ve now done some debugging and it looks like this is caused by how EDF’s current login tokens work.

At setup, the integration logs in using your EDF Your Account email/password and receives a refresh token. Home Assistant stores that token, not your password, and uses it to keep getting short-lived access tokens.

The issue is that the refresh token appears to have a fixed expiry date. It also doesn’t seem to be replaced with a new one when it is used. So once it expires, the integration can no longer refresh the connection and you have to log in again manually.

This is different from the Octopus Home Assistant integration, where users can generate a long-lived API key in their account. That API key can then be used to keep the integration working indefinitely without repeated logins.

I’ve written to EDF to explain the issue and ask whether they can explore improvements.

The two obvious options would be either:

  1. allowing customers to generate an API key in EDF Your Account, similar to Octopus; or

  2. changing the token behaviour so refresh tokens rotate and can keep the integration authenticated.

I've had a fast response from one of the directors at EDF putting my queries over to their tech team - so hopefully may have a more substantive update at some stage.

Meanwhile I'll update the behaviour so that HA prompts for re-authentication for a couple of days ahead of the current session expiring. A compromise... but hopefully an improvement.

New features

A new release went out tonight.
A few bug fixes, and a couple of new bits of functionality:

New features

Event-based free electricity windows
Two new sensors track upcoming / active free electricity events (e.g. promotional offers):

  • sensor.edf_energy__event_free_start — timestamp of the next/current event window start
  • sensor.edf_energy__event_free_end — timestamp of the next/current event window end

Both sensors include event_name, the partner sensor timestamp, and is_active as attributes.

World Cup 2026 automatic scheduling
Whenever England or Scotland play a World Cup 2026 match, the integration automatically populates the event sensors with a 2-hour free electricity window starting at kick-off. Match schedule is fetched from the openfootball public data feed and refreshes every 4 hours. The sensors advance to the next upcoming match automatically after a window closes.

This isn't EDF data - it wont know if you're subscribed to the free energy World Cup offer, and it also won't know when matches go to extra time - BUT it will automate 2 hours (the default) free electricity when England or Scotland play.

free_electricity_now covers event windows

The existing binary_sensor.edf_energy_free_electricity_now sensor (used for Sunday Saver so far) now activates during event-based windows in addition to Sunday Saver. Sunday Saver takes priority if both windows overlap. The sensor now runs its safeguard check every day (not only on Sundays) to correctly handle mid-week events.

Ways to show support for ongoing development.

A few kind souls have been messaging me privately keen to support my work on this EDF library - thank you also to those who haven't been in touch but have used my EDF referral code which is linked from the GitHub page.

So here's a post of referral links / options to sponsor the development.

I'm normally a bit too modest to share referral links etc - but as the library is gobbling up a fair bit of my time (should slow down once more established) I'm swallowing that pride and making this post. I'll also add the links to the 'support this project' areas of the GitHub readme.

No pressure to do any of the things listed here - but if you do, thank you.

Steve

Fuse Energy:

I fixed my gas with Fuse Energy as they offered a better fixed rate for longer (13 months), and lower standing charges than either Octopus or EDF offered me.

They also offer standalone SEG at 13p a unit if your existing supplier offers less and allows you to take your export elsewhere.

When you join you can use a friend's code and spin the wheel to win between £25 and £150 in bill credit.

My friend code is: STEVE25217

------

Axle VPP:

If you have a home battery from GivEnergy, SigEnergy, Fox, Solax, Solis, or SolarEdge you can earn £1 per kwh (minimum £10 a month) for signing up with Axle Energy's Virtual Power Plant.

They'll (either through your manufacturer's API, or you can schedule it yourself using their HomeAssistant plugin) export from your battery at times when the grid needs support in your area. The £1 per kwh hour charge is on top of whatever you already get from your energy provider.

I've had £60+ already from them this year.

Get £25 credit by using my sign up link:
https://vpp.axle.energy/landing?ref=R-ZFQNNABO

with GivEnergy in administration and now charging £5 per month for their app / API usage the referral no longer applies to their kit - but you do get free premium subscription instead of (worth £60 per year).

Monzo Bank:

Up to £50 for opening a business account.

£10 for a personal account.

Sunday Saver integration - in release 18.4.0b

[Version renumbered to 18.4.0 - the b was upsetting some versions of HA]

Sunday Saver support is now in beta (v18.4.0) 🎉

This release adds initial support for EDF's Sunday Saver free electricity sessions. Here's what's included:

New sensors:

- Sunday Saver Start — shows the start time of this week's free electricity window

- Sunday Saver End — shows the end time of this week's free electricity window

- Free Electricity Now — a simple on/off binary sensor that flips on at the start of a Sunday Saver session and off at the end. It uses precise time-based triggers so it should switch right on the dot, with a backup check every 30 minutes on Sundays just in case, and it'll also sort itself out correctly if Home Assistant restarts mid-session.

Don't overheat your DNO fuse folks!

Panel:

The EDF Energy panel now includes a Sunday Saver section alongside the existing off-peak and smart charging windows. It keeps a rolling 60-day history of past sessions, and the section only appears on Sundays so it's not cluttering things up the rest of the week.

---

A word of caution - EDF won't let me enrol on Sunday Saver until I have at least a month of smart meter readings, so I won't be able to do any live testing myself until July. I've done everything I can to make it robust, but there may be rough edges. If you run into any problems please raise an issue on GitHub and I'll get it sorted.

---

Massive thanks to u/Jai_Cee on Reddit for pointing us at the right APIs to pull this data - this wouldn't have been possible (or as quick) without that nudge in the right direction. 🙌

Football free electricity

Make sure you all log in to your EDF accounts and go to Energy Hub >> 'Events' - opt in to get 2 hours of free electricity whenever England or Scotland play.

I'll have a look at exposing a sensor for the timings of this (they're not events in the EDF API - but there are plenty of data sources for World Cup Fixtures I can use).
