What are your experiences regarding current PhD admissions? [D]

Hi,

how hard is it currently to get a PhD position in machine Learning? Like what are the requirements to get to a decent mid tier program (= they publish regularly at respected journals and their work gets read my some people)? How is it in different regions e.g US, Europe, etc..

I am about to finish my masters and am wondering if I need to sweep in an unpaid guided research project to extend my network.

No citations, 50.000 downloads, sus?

Hi,

I published my first paper in a AAAS affiliated journal.

Somehow after a year, it got 50.000 downloads (I am pretty sure there aren't that many people in that field) within 3 days, despite having 0 citations.

As this is currently my only paper I wonder if this will look weird on an application. They see it in my CV, they click on it and then they see 50k downloads but no citations.

I asked the journal, and they said this was due to a promotional campaign with adds. But why would they pay for clicks, if their purpose is Merit?

If you saw an application for a PhD position, with just one paper, and the paper is like that, would you think "kinda sus" or would you think "normal"? Should I be worried?
