Ive been looking around for apprentice jeweler positions in my area and I have a few interviews/bench test coming up next week. I’ve taken a years worth of metalwork and stone setting classes at the local arts center, and I was feeling pretty ok about my experience being decent enough to start as an apprentice, but one of the jewelers made a comment about “having to reteach me everything”when I mentioned the arts center classes, which has made me feel less confident about my skills. How much experience did you have when you started off as an apprentice? I am now worried I’m just going to embarrass myself at the bench test
EDIT: thanks everyone who has commented for sharing your thoughts! It’s reassuring to hear that I’m probably overreacting to the comment. I do have a tendency to overthink small things like this, I will work on not psyching myself out so much 😬
How do you know when you’re ready to try extended butterfly? I’m a little terrified to loosen my knee grip, but I’ve been doing regular butterfly for about 6 months now and am curious if i could be ready to try it. Any tips for not falling on my face?
Soldering all the little curlicues together was really hard, but I made it work! Super proud of this one.
I find it difficult going into an apprentice from standing so it feels good to add this aerial entrance to my repertoire!
Definitely one of my most challenging soldering jobs so far!
I remember posting to this sub six months ago struggling to get my hips up, now I am much better at it and working towards my aerial invert!
I have learned a few other types of stone setting like bezel, prong, basket etc and im wanting to level up my skills and learn how to flush set. There’s lots of tutorials online that I’m planning to use to learn and practice, but I was wondering if anyone here has their own advice or tutorials you would recommend for learning this type of setting?
I’m trying to clean up/polish this brass pendant (took the stone out to try to do a better job) and im having trouble getting into the spots between the squiggles with the limited sanding/polishing bits my studio has (second & third photo). What kind of bits can I use to be able to get in the hard to reach areas? Also why do the silicone discs basically disintegrate when you use them? Am I doing something wrong or are they supposed to grind down super fast?
Recently someone who is active in this sub was kicked from the Polerinas discord for displaying and actively defending hatred for sex work. How do you all feel about someone like that being a part of this sub?
