found a collection of dead turtles - natural? | What Happened? | Chickahominy River, Virginia

I went kayaking at Chickahominy River, just east of Richmond, Virginia. We have a long-term drought (>2' down). This was 6:00am. We're having heat wave with heat index of 116 the day of the pic, but these were dead for days based on decomp. Finally, this is head waters of the river and this spot is land locked because of dropped water, there are many many turtles in what is the size of maybe 2 Olympic sized swimming pools of water. I came up to shoreline with kayak to launch and discovered this collective spot of turtles. It's possible that a bank fisherman did it some how, but it looked more like it was a natural thing. There was also at least one dead in the water.

Any ideas what happened?

First 22 mile trip in my mechanically restored 1957 Lonestar Admiral

Took at long trip out in my Vintage boat project (1957 Lonestar Admiral Deluxe Runabout/BF25A Honda) It was a nice day for a run. Trip starts in Virginia on Little Wicomico River, Crosses into Maryland and Potomac River a couple times leaving Smith Point Jetty, then a buzz around Smith Point Lighthouse, then a turn South towards Ingram Bay and Fleeton Point.

2 6 gallon tanks 80% full, barely used 2 gallons if that. This little boat is a worry-free pleasure, albeit 4 adults feels like a can of sardines hahaha.

Oyster Aquaculture - while out kayaking...

I call them "oyster coffins" b/c they're a little creepy looking. They are cages that hold maturing oysters for the seafood industry. The cage allows the bivalve to grow, eat algae, and help filter the water, but protects them from predators like otters and red drum. This is the Little Wicomico River, in the Northern Neck Virginia.
