Should I accept money for a one-off babysit for my niece?

Hi! My BİL asked me to babysit my one-year-old niece for their anniversary. It will just be the one day. He’s expressed it’ll be saving him lots of money in babysitting fees and since I’ll be driving quite a way to their place has offered to cover gas and food/activity money. I love my niece and am super excited to spend the day so I’m not doing it for money. Though I am broke atm and it would really help especially with petrol. But I don’t know if it’s wrong to accept it?

For context I’m from a culture that’s quite community focused so watching kids and things like that for free are quite normal and it’s kind of social no-no really to accept money in many occasions. I think I also didn’t want to feel like or for others to think I’m watching my nice only because I’m being paid. However he seems keen and I do need the money so am I overthinking this haha? 😂

S13 e6: True Believers

Spoilers ahead!

Just watched true believers and I feel confused about the whole episode. I found Olivia and some of the squads actions problematic (though this is not the first time because often it seems whatever some witness or some says they just fly with it) and the whole episode it felt like they were building up to some kind of twist but no twist came and it was just odd to me? Because it felt like it was both exploring women’s experience reporting and difficulty getting convictions but then also how black people are treated by the police and the criminal justice system. And yet by trying to do both I felt like it did a disservice to both cause. Either they should have had a twist that the guy on trial just looked like the real perp hence the mistaken identity of a black guy OR they shouldn’t have just focused the episode on the difficult of getting a conviction and the toll it takes on women. Idk what are other people’s thoughts ??

On a side note it was so nice to see Andre Braugher pop up!! (Let’s go Captain Holt!)

I never had a celebration

Last year, after years of hard work and a gruelling application process, I finally achieved my dream and got onto a training programme for my work. Whilst I received lots of praise and congrats and my sibling got me a small gift as a congrats, I didn’t receive anything more than that - no celebration whatsoever. Other family members didn’t even get me a card. I tried to plan something but it got put off supposedly because others were planning something for me. I kept waiting but it didn’t happen and everyone moved on with their lives.

I’ve wanted this programme for so long and it’s huge progression in my career. Financially, especially when I graduate it will really change things for me and where I support my mum, it’ll be helping her out too. It’s been a year now and I simply can’t get over the fact I never got a celebration. As a family we got together many times for different events, each time barely a mention of my course let alone some cards and flowers or a celebration or something. It just feels hurtful that something so exciting and long wished for was barely celebrated that others in my life barely joined in with my joy. And it’s hurtful because starting this journey and now being one year in it just feels a little tainted because part of me still wanted that celebration.

To add to it a friend of mine also made it onto this training and whilst we were meant to meet up to celebrate together things got in the way in the initial stages so it didn’t happen. They had a celebration and I was there and it was lovely but later on since I got nothing from my family I expressed I’d love to still meet up one on one to have that celebration, even expressing it’d be nice since I haven’t really gotten to celebrate. And it just went ignored and unnoticed.

I feel really hurt about it and just wish also that I had been more direct and upfront with my family, that as time went on instead of waiting I just asked, because now it feels awkward to say anything and it’s not like it’ll change anything because we can’t exactly go back in time. I just think even if not what they were originally planning, they could have still just popped by with some flowers and had a meal or something, just something to commemorate the achievement just to celebrate in person. It just makes me feel unimportant.

If you were new to investing today, where would you start?

I’ve been trying for a few years to wrap my head around investing and start building my portfolio, but truth be told it’s not moving along much.

So curious to know, if you were to start today to try and build some wealth, where would you start? Where would you invest, which app would you use, how much would you invest etc.?

And specifically if you were hoping to do so with ethical investments, what would you do?
