My mom's results (repost)
She's a Moroccan Jew (a mix of Toshavim, Musta'ribim, and a Sephardic ancestor).
I've actually been researching my family's history (on both sides) for five years now, trying out tons of genetic tests. My mom's results are different from average Moroccan Jews' results simply because she isn't an average Moroccan Jew.
I totally understand the confusion and surprise, and I really appreciate everyone's willingness to help. But my mom's results are simply not what Sephardic results look like. She does have that ancestry, and I always say it, but we have no knowledge of anyone else being Sephardic, and she isn't Sephardic. If it ever turns out that I somehow discover another Sephardic ancestor, I'll be the first to say so, I always mention the one we do know about. It's not like I'm ashamed of it or anything, it's simply not my family's history. I only found out in my teens that other North African Jews are considered Sephardic or came from Spain, and I was in shock and asked my mom, she told me about our one Sephardic ancestor and warned me never to say anything about being Sephardics to her father, because he would take being called Sephardic as an insult (an overreaction, but whatever...). I truly appreciate the willingness to help, but I don't appreciate people trying to tell me how I should identify or who I am.
About the European DNA—my mom gets a mix of Northern and Southern European or just Northern European, but she almost always scores Northern European (it's extremely rare when she doesn't) across all testing platforms. It could be a proxy, or it could be real. Either way, the family has always identified as North African rather than Sephardic, and I think her results actually back that up.
She also gets a perfect match to the Moroccan Jew toshav-shifted sample.
