2 programs at once? talaria vs csr x

hi everyone!

i have two upcoming summer programs. i already got into talaria summer institute and waiting on the results for the csr-x program. i believe csr x comes out the 7th based on well i mean reddit.

obv rn idk if i got into csr x yet but i was wondering if i did somehow get in would u recommend doing it along with talaria? im def doing talaria as its 1 on 1. my ecs are not very stem-based and im looking at majoring in math data science smth along those lines so i want to maximize my stem ecs. csr x has a project that's really similar to my interests but i heard some issues with mentors (smth about them also being high schoolers?)

i'm taking the july act so after that i should be a bit more free after (except for summer hw which is a later august problem and college app preparation however ur supposed to start that)

what would you recommend? could i do both this summer?

Small Chess Analysis Project (3-4 People, High School Only, 3-5 Weeks)

Hi! I’m looking to form a small group (3-5 people max) for a short-term chess analysis project. This is for high school students only. I’m an incoming senior.

The goal is to collaboratively explore patterns in chess strategy and play across different skill levels and produce a structured final output together (the topic of the project is still in the works, and I'm open to ideas. We can definitely tweak or change this once we start working).

This is not a long-term research lab or formal academic paper—just a focused, short project we’ll complete in ~3-5 weeks.

To introduce myself, I’m an incoming senior with experience in competitive chess and organizing small chess-related activities and tutoring.

What we’ll do:

We’ll choose ONE direction together, such as:

  • Differences in strategy between beginner / intermediate / advanced players
  • Common mistakes and blunders across skill levels
  • Opening choices and how they vary by rating
  • Game structure patterns (opening vs midgame vs endgame behavior)
  • Any other chess-related question the group agrees on

We may optionally include simple data analysis if someone is interested, but it is not required for the project to work. It’s just an optional layer if the group wants to explore it further.

Final output:

We will produce one of the following:

  • structured report / write-up
  • slide presentation
  • or a combined analysis document

The goal is a clear, organized final product that could be shared publicly or published in a simple online format.

Who I’m looking for:

  • 3-5 motivated high school students interested in chess (any level welcome)
  • Reliable and able to commit ~3-5 weeks
  • Willing to contribute consistently (not just passively join)
  • No advanced experience required

Structure:

  • Weekly check-ins (~30 minutes)
  • Shared Google Doc for progress
  • Small roles assigned after forming the group
  • One final deliverable at the end

NOTE: Please only apply if you can realistically commit for the full duration. I’m keeping this intentionally small so we can actually complete something meaningful.

Fill out this form to apply:
https://forms.gle/6RzjnBnTz9JRzvS59

I’ll review responses and select 3-5 people, then we’ll start immediately.

If you have any additional questions, feel free to reach out via dm or the application form (last question).

Thank you! I'm sure we can make something great.

*urgent* screwed up less than a week before act

i got a 31 (33 eng, 32 math, 28 reading, 29 science) on the feb act for some context.

i decided id take the act again and started studying. i won't lie, i procrastinated. A LOT.

still after when took a few legacies and also the enhanced revolution prep act, i was doing pretty good. legacies AND revolution prep tests i avg 35-36 eng, 34-35 math, 31 reading, and 30 science. ofc i tohught i rly need to work on the last 2, but at least i felt like i was improving

then, i took tir released act (basically a fresh test don't remember anything). this was my worst attempt by far. all of a sudden, i did mcuh worse (34 eng, 33 math, 23 reading, 27 science). this completely broke my confidence

yes i did change my strategy to reading the passage first unlike feb which i thought increased my accuracy, but then this happened?!

this is my last act i rly can't take anymore after july. i genuinely don't know what to do. i was thinking of maybe using the legacy practices i have and putting them into notebooklm and asking it to pick out the questions from topics im weak on. idek what to do anymore. i'm so scared. i reallyyyy need some advice

i really need a 34+ composite is it just not possible anymore 😭

talaria summer institute results + questions moving forward

hi everyone! finally got into talaria after so much anticipation. i just had a few questions:

firstly, i heard many people say the start date is the 5th but they didn't specify anything in my email + gave me 3 days to respond so i was a bit confused... is it different for everyone?

also i applied to csr-x as well; do yall think if i do get in somehow is it worth doing both or should i choose one? which one is better?

i'm a rising senior and this is my only research so do you guys think i should still continue cold emailing or should i just give up because it's not like i've had any luck anyway...

also i was just curious if the acceptance rate this time around was higher than last time. at least personally everyone ik who applied got in (which is like 3 other people) and was wondering if anyone has any idea on the acceptance rate or do we at least get to find out at some point?

congrats to everyone else who got in!

losing hope about talaria but...

hi guys. at this point i've basically given up on the talaria summer institute results but i wanted to ask one more time. did anyone get results for math/physics/comp sci related mentors? at least the results i've heard have been with people in bio/med fields so i still want to hold onto some hope.

honestly theres no way though bc back then i said i was interested in quantum computing, wave-particle duality, and quarks like idk what i was thinking T.T (put math and physics as the vague subjects of interest). now i'm interested in pursuing data science in college and ik my application was really good i'm just having regrets about the topic i wanted chose. don't get me wrong its still really interesting id love to research it but theres no way its happening... like no profs gonna be able to research w me on that online first of all and theres no way theres mentors available in that field like?!?! theres no chance that im getting matched is there this is like my only opportunity to get research and id be really passionate too...

sorry about the little rant lol but pls lmkkk

also whens the program supposed to start

csr-x results

hi everyone

i found out a little while ago that csr-x does interviews. i thought maybe i didn't get one because i submitted it on the deadline like on the dot. its already June 29th though so i just wanted to know my chances; dyt its basically a rejection if i havent gotten an interview?

talaria round 2 results rolling out?

hello! i've seen people on the discord say they got matched. has anyone else? congrats to everyone who got in!

what do you guys think it means if we still haven't gotten it? is that a sign of rejection or the waitlist? or dyt its just rolling out?

science and reading seem impossible...

hi everyone

i'm taking the july act. im ngl i have been procrastinating a lot but i really want at least a 33-34 on science and reading (i got a 29 and 28 on them respectively when i took feb 2026). according to my last practice test i got approx. a 31 on both sections (mind you i exceeded the reading time by A LOT), but i was practicing with a legacy. i honestly don't know what to do. also my tutor told me to read the whole passage which i think may work better for enhanced given the shorter passages and more time but i don't think i'm retaining information that well. don't get me wrong, i think reading passages is better bc my accuracy is slightlyyy better after it since before picking out info def made me get a lot more wrong. science is a WHOLE other story i don't even know how to approach it? and when i check for right or wrong answers i think my choice was so silly. but when i'm on the test, its so difficult

NICHE differences: enhanced act vs legacy MASTER POST

guys we all know the structural differences. those who already took the enhanced act and legacy (or past tests / practices) in each section, what is new? new topics? harder questions? what about science? more background knowledge? is englihs and reading similar to the sat now?

i did take feb and it was pretty hard and felt different but tbh i completely forgot how it was it mightve been the stress. are legacies even helpful atp?

i heard 2022-2024 are the best practice but idek.

thanks! helped a cooked gal out plsss

best major combos (math heavy?)

hi everyone

im an incoming high school senior, and now i really need to figure a major out. with this current climate im honestly scared abt what to choose. right now im considering a double major in data science and applied math (honestly don't know the application process well either so idk if i can do that exactly head on? i heard it is easier to get into applied math than data science competition wise esp cuz not as many ppl major in it but idk). i don't have much coding knowledge except for basic java and python from school coursework, but iwill be taking apcsa next year. i love math ive taken ap calc bc this year and will continue with rigorous courses. would u recommend any other major combinations? i've thought about info systems too but im honestly not sure.

thank you!

3rd party material (rev prep) vs actual tests

hi everyone!

i've recently started receiving tutoring at revolution prep (not a big fan of the tutors themselves as much if ykwim esp for higher aims i think they're better for getting core concepts down) and the material intrigued me. recently i did a math practice from them that is supposed to be harder than act math and genuinely it was. ive also heard they're partners with the act but im a little skeptical bc i would think they would market it more but none of the tutors havent mentioned it to me either. i've been doing hw from them but i also have a past act test. do you think its worth doing their material? i've always been told that harder-than-the-test material helps you view the test material as easier, but would you agree that their material is truly harder (this is my main question of the post lol sorry for all the rambling)? what's the BEST thing to do right now? is it worth it?

chess as an ec for high schoolers

hi everyone!

i've been going through other reddit threads too, but then thought, wouldn't it be best to ask a chess reddit threat itself?

essentially,

i've done chess for a lot of my life right and obv i got interest much later so i wasn't able to climb up to a title. most of my best awards r from ms and i only have one tournament award id put on my college apps from hs. i wanted to get advice on how i can expand on chess as an extracurricular. for example, as of now, i'm part of a chess npo promoting chess amongst girls without access. thats honestly about it umm and i was part of the school chess club for a while.

my rating at hand is mid, but bc as many girls dont play chess in my age group, im in the top 50 nationally (in the us) for just firls MY age group and under 21 girls (im 17 btw). i also want to major in data science and applied math (or machine learning not rly sure yet. concept is interesting but i lowk only know very basic python and java thru coursework nothing more T.T). is there a way i can really connect everything? even not connect, is there any way i can kind of transform this into something more meaningful?

also pls lmk if anyone is doing projects, open to collaborations, or even taking mentees right now. I'm rly passionate about chess and math and will try my best.

Thank you!
