dual degree vs dual major

I'm currently attending NUS as a math major, but i wanted some advice on what i should prioritise to eventually break into quant

  1. Math major + qf second major + comp sci minor
  2. Math major + comp sci second major + qf minor
  3. Math + comp sci dual degree + economics/qf minor

Also, I could use some insights into what are some good projects that are niche but add value to your resume.

Dual major or Dual Degree?

So, Currently im a y1s1 student, and I'm contemplating which combo I should take in s2. I havent declared any second major or minor as of now, but there's a few options:
(considering I want to get into quant/computational finance/math heavy finance jobs)

Since I'm a CHS student, I cannot dual degree in any other BSc degrees.

option 1: Math primary + Econs (secondary) + quant finance(minor)
Option 2L Math primary + QF(secondary) + econs/data analytics (minor)
Option 3 : Math + CS dual degree
Option 4: Math + CS second major + qf/econs/data analytics (minor)

Workload isn't really an issue for me, I can manage taking a lot of classes.

tips to break into math heavy quant roles? (preferably sgp)

So I'm going to be joining NUS(international student) as a Math Major. Im planning to do a QF second major with a minor in data analytics and take multiple comp sci courses for unrestricted electives.

Every year I'll prob come back to my home country and do a quant internship here (jp morgan maybe) for around 3 months, since I have people who are willing to refer me.

Are there any specific tips or advice to be someone companies are willing to hire for quant? Any math/comp sci courses/skills that would give me an advantage?

christ work culture

soo, I just withdrew from christ a week ago. Everything said below is my PERSONAL experience, I'm just sharing it here.

I attended for almost two months i think? These were the worst days I have ever experienced.

Since I live kinda far, I have to travel 40-50 mins everyday to reach campus, so to attend a 9:45 class I have to leave at 8:40 by Bus (because i don't get autos easily due to the distance). From the start, Christ wasn't really finalised coz I was waiting for some other unis to declare results and stuff, so no point moving to an appt near christ.

Anyway, my department had one of the most annoying teachers. Yeah, they're nice people, but i feel like the teaching and learning was SO SLOW. Like, in an hour of lectures, they barely got to the point. while I agree that it was the first months and they wanted to go slow and stuff, but it was unnecessarily slow. I felt like I wasn't learning anything.

Now, we had classes till 4:45, so that meant i reached home at 6. Now obv, not everyone lives this far away so some problems that I faced are easily avoidable.

Most of my teachers would teach half the concepts without really going into depth, and when I asked doubts, they would just tell me to "explore" without providing any further explanation. one of them lit told me to chat-gpt my doubt because she didn't want to answer it or smth. Like I get it, there might be questions where teachers are confused too, BUT this is a first year class bro. its lit the most basic of basic concepts. WYM you cannot even bother to explain it to me. And this wasn't a one time occurence, it happened multiple times.

Beside that, the unnecessary records and notes, but ykw fine that was the least of my worries.

After allll that during the day, they would assign HOMEWORK. These teachers expected us to prepare for their CIAs, while assigning homework, while giving us unnecessary records to write, and then kept encouraging us to participate in events and clubs.

Yeah, I get it, homework isn't that big of an issue. But cmon bro, you use my entire day up for classes. By the time I get done w their stuff, its usually 12 at night, then i sleep and wake up early to go do the same thing all over again. Its just such a bad work environment, especially coz they stuff you into a tiny ass classroom with 80 other people, and NO ONE has the space to move coz the classrooms are so tiny. Like, if you're gonna have so many ppl in one place, atleast install acs so it's a little less suffocating. The whole environment felt worse than a school. It felt like being handcuffed to my seat in the class.

And then the fuss about attendance. Like attendance is important, i completely agree, but there needs to be more freedom. For any club related activities, I haven't received any claims yet. Esp coz one of my teachers decided to mark attendance for three hours despite taking only one hour and i just happened to have clubs then. And when I asked for claims? NOTHING.

And Hed, oh my god I hated it so much. The teacher who taught us HED never even talked about the actual ppt. It was always abt sum glazing christ stuff without actually teaching the points she wrote in the ppt. It was so annoying to listen to the same "other colleges I went to didnt do this but christ does" lecture every single class. It was insufferable.

In short, yeah it's a good college, but the experience I had just threw me off. I was so burnt out within a month, idk if i would have lasted even 1 full year lmao. I'm not going to say its a bad college, the mdc classes and stuff were really fun. Campus is super lit and there's always some event or stall that you can participate in. But personally i would only recommend it for commerce/life sciences/arts/psychology. I made good friends there, but the place itself just wasn't for me.

math major CHS - what courses do i take

So I'm an incoming freshmen majoring in Mathematics w a second major in QF and minor in data analytics. However, i was pre allocated MAT1301, which means i cannot take any of my desired core courses this semester (since they're all locked behind MAT1301). I'm pretty well versed w all the topics in MAT1301 and I have studied all the topics in gr 12 (obv) so I'm kinda confused. Is there a way that i can clear the course earlier? coz all my core courses are locked behind this one course and idrk what other courses to take

math modules

Hi! I'm an incoming freshman and I'm majoring in Mathematics. I am kinda lost when it comes to deciding what modules i should take and in which sems. I'm wondering if any current/graduated Math majors have any advice/suggestions/rankings for math modules. I was thinking of planning my mods in a way that i have more free time and less coursework in yr3/4. Any advice would help!

quant job market in Singapore?

I got accepted into NUS for mathematics (Undergrad)
I did not get the MOE grant even though i appealed. I had a couple questions

  1. how is the job market for quants who graduate from NUS?

  2. Provided i cannot afford the tuition and take a loan, how much would the initial pay be and how difficult would it be to repay?

  3. what is the starting/minimum pay for an NUS graduate

  4. what are the job market forecasts post 4-5 years?

  5. Does your employability in sgp change if you do not have the tuition grant?

i had to reject NUS

sooo i got into NUS for Mathematics UG, and while I can manage to pay the tuition (since i did not receive the grant) it is basically using up 90% of my family's savings and investments. The annual tuition fee (including accommodation) is almost twice my family's annual income (since I'm an international student) NUS has been my dream uni for a while, and I worked really hard to get accepted. But I just dont think i can get myself to cause so much financial burden on my family. i was very confident that i would get the need based financial aid, but I wasnt given any form of financial assistance.

Lowk need advice on what I should do, I havent rejected the offer yet, I have time till 6th July.

For context: I'm planning to do quant, and I'm wondering whether not having the grant will change how employers perceive you and what the job market is for grads fresh out of college(for quant specifically)

Got accepted but need some advice

so im an indian student who got accepted to ug for mathematics. but i did not get any MOE tuition grant or financial aid. i plan to get into quant related careers.

i dont think i can afford the tuition fees comfortable (incl accomodation and all). while my dad is willing to pay, its a significant strain in our financial resources.

im also currently attending a local uni with a decent reputation in my city as a dual major mathematics and computer science student. i need advice on whether or not i should accept the nus admission or continue at my local uni and focus on my skills? what are the employment opportunities like in sgp for quant provided that i do not have a tuition grant? id love some assistance on this matter, and im open to talking in dms.

Can someone verify this proof? Explanation given below

the aim is to prove that angle A is a right angle

i started with removing the denominators by taking lcm, and then tried reducing the terms to a^2, b^2, c^2 wherever possible using the law of cosines

i have assumed angle A is 90 degrees, because otherwise the conditions would not hold true. i tried to use the problem and reduce it to the pythagorean theorem to prove the right angle. lmk if i should change a step or the entire proof.

i am mostly confused with weather deriving the pythagorean theorem from this problem would be a valid proof to prove that angle A is 90 degrees.
i would also like to know if there’s any other methods to solve this, and we can discuss them.
