Unique Winter World Mechanics
Was reading Shadow Slave and just got to the fight against the Winter Beast and thought of a really cool monster idea because of a stray thought that crossed my mind. “Huh, where does the heat energy go to if the Winter Beast lowers the temp that much?”
It would make for a really cool world building mechanic where a fantasy world utterly doom itself to an eternal winter due to a war. Said winter decimates 90% of the population and cause humanity to develop a frostpunklike civilization where its fueled by the mages left after the war.
However, the remnants of one of the empires that started the world ending war wasn’t satisfied with its state where its military might was limited by the refuelling of the giant furnaces used to heat their city, so after years of research, they finally hatched a Phoenix.
This Phoenix acts as the artificial sun of their city at no cost to the mages and frees up their might. However it comes at a terrible cost as the phoenix fuels itself through the heat energy left in the rest of the world. This in turn makes the winter manyfold worse, causing smaller settlements to freeze over and large ones to shrink drastically. Thankfully, the Phoenix is still immature and its power not yet at its peak.
Now the story begins in place of one of these former large settlements that is shrinking. the protagonist must rally all the other settlements to fight against the remnants of the empire, but it wont be easy. As to gather the fighting force needed all of them must sacrifice some of their citizens to the unending cold due to insufficient mages powering their furnaces.
