In JD Vance’s hometown, comment on his new memoir is hard to find

I know Peter and Michael won’t be covering Communion, but in my petty heart of hearts I like to think that their commentary on Hillbilly Elegy lead to at least some of the suspicion of Vance’s new book. Of course there are so many reasons why people in Middletown don’t have a lot to say, but this article definitely made me think of the pod.

May this kind of love always find you

Lunch is a crispy chicken wrap, pickle spears, and potato salad.

My fiance packs my lunch for me every weekday. Even on my WFH days, he preps my lunch before he goes to work. He knows I love eating but hate cooking, so over the past four years we’ve lived together he’s taken over lunch prep.

I hope that if you haven’t found someone who treats you this well yet, that this love finds you. It doesn’t have to be in the form of a romantic relationship. It doesn’t literally have to be getting your lunch made for you. But I hope your lives contain the kinds of people who love you the way you want and deserve to be loved.

I love going to baseball games alone

Yesterday I ended up with a last-minute, free ticket to the baseball game. I'm behind on a lot of household responsibilities (like a leak under the kitchen sink), but I blew everything off to go. I usually get to see 5 games a year in person; there are a group of people in my neighborhood who pool on season tickets in the bleachers and we divvy up the games, so I get a good number of trips to the ballpark for a reasonable amount of money. But I will always seize the opportunity to go to an extra game, especially when it's free.

My fiance is happy to go to a game or two each season with me, and I have friends who like to go once in a while as well. But I'm the only person in my friend group or family who really loves baseball. And honestly, it was so nice to just watch the game without having to worry about whether the person I was with was bored/too hot/mad we were losing/etc. I got to just enjoy my own company and write some poems while enjoying a night at the ballpark. The weather was perfect, the bleachers weren't too crowded, and even though we lost it was all in all a lovely night.

Girl dinner at the stadium was a fancy popsicle (mango base, Chamoy syrup, and freeze-dried mango on top), plus a pretzel with extra cheese and a soda.

Is the reception dress worth it?

I have my dress, and it's gorgeous. It's exactly what I wanted . . . *and* the more I think about it, the more a reception dress for dancing sounds like something I want as well. My wedding dress is simple, elegant, and suits my style, but when I think of myself on the dance floor, I'm just in something a little different. Maybe I should have thought of that before I bought this dress, but honestly, I can't see myself getting married in anything else.

So for those of you who did a reception dress, was it worth it? Did you feel you got your money's worth from both dresses? Was doing an outfit change in the middle of everything else super annoying?

Context regarding my own wedding:

  • My dress ended up being well under budget, so adding a reception dress would not be a financial strain;
  • Whatever I get will likely be something off-the-rack from a department store, not an expensive bridal boutique (once was enough for that!);
  • Note that I can dance in my actual wedding dress, so that's not an issue

I would love to hear your thoughts?
