Horror RPGs? (With a focus on the RPG)

Hi y'all!

Kind of a niche request and there isn't much info online. I'm looking for horror-themed RPGs, ideally with gameplay that leans toward RPG. ie I love Shadow Hearts, but that leans even further from horror than what I am ideally looking for. The general aesthetic and narrative themes are very much horror, but the design philosophies around what feelings the game is trying to get from the player are not what I would consider horror.

I usually have a gentle preference for more "fun" horror over pure trauma. Resident Evil 4 and Amnesia are examples, although I adore both. As much as I love survival and exploration/narrative horror experiences, they often skip past spooky for me and I get very anxious and stop having fun. Turn-based or relatively slow gameplay (as in not requiring especially quick reflexes) is definitely ideal.

Hope that makes sense! I'm already planning on starting Parasite Eve soon, which is probably exactly what I'm looking for. I also downloaded the demo for Wicked Seed which I'm SUPER excited to check out. Unfortunately, it seems like this little sub-genre is very under represented :(

Mary Skelter 2 freezing in dialogue?

Hi y'all,

I've been trying to play Mary Skelter 2, and I keep running into a total freeze - no crash - during dialogue. For those that have played it, it is only happening during events at the base where character stills are chatting. I've tried various drivers and settings, no luck yet. I played through several hours on my Steam Deck before switching to my Retroid Pocket 5, and same issues.

It happened once earlier in my playthrough, but I ended up skipping the dialogue event. The freezes only happen during those moments at the base.

Does anyone have an idea how to fix it? I'm also fairly technically inept, but I'll do my best to communicate whatever I need

Isekai, but that breaks away from some tropes

Hi y'all,

Some of my most formative media from my youth was early(ish) isekai - I have distinct memories of when Digimon first came to the states, Final Fantasy X, etc. No hate to those that like it, but I'm not big on the direction isekai usually goes.

Recently, Re:Zero has made it solidly into my top 3 anime, and I'm psyched to catch up on the novels as well. I'm definitely craving a whole lot more.

Without going into too many specifics, a lot of the sexual themes in particular cause problems for me to watch, and there's a lot of it in isekai. There are plenty of shows I have on my watch list, but I've been anxious to start them because I'm not entirely sure on what I'll see. I tried Shield Hero and was enjoying it, but it got problematic for me pretty quick.

I would love more recs for solidly written isekai that don't include as much of the validation/harem stuff. Obviously it's present in Re:Zero too, but it's handled differently. Solo Leveling is another example of where I'm ok with it - as much as I love that show, I can't say the writing is particularly engaging though. It's dumb popcorn fun, but VERY fun.

Any more I should look into? I'm ok with shonen and leaning towards younger audiences as long as the writing is deep enough.

Cheers!

Suggestions for a journaling app?

Hi all!

I just started working with a new therapist, and I think he's a wonderful match for me and I'm very excited. We agreed that a big and important first step would be to get a solid journaling habit started, and I totally agree.

I work in the fitness industry and I use journaling for myself and my clients all the time. I've found some things that really don't work for me, so I have a decent eye for things I should look for.

Obviously I've done my own research, but wanted to see if anyone has personal recs that might align with what I'm looking for. Realistically, the more friction and less convenient it is, the less likely I am to stick with it. Here's a list of big points I hope to find. Sorry if formatting gets funky, I'm on mobile.

-Virtual, ideally synced between my phone and a server I can access from a computer. I've considered a Google Doc, but don't think that would be convenient

-Easily templated and reviewed. Just copy and paste is fine, but if there is a template that can break things into specific chunks (quality of sleep, daily workouts, diet and appetite, etc), that would be great. I expect to look back at it often, hence why I'm steering away from something like a Google Doc. Too much empty space

-Free. Didn't think this was necessary to add, but EVERYTHING has a subscription nowadays

Sorry if it's ambiguous. People go through a lot and I wouldn't be surprised if someone here has awesome input that didn't occur to me, so figured I'd ask.

Cheers, thanks y'all :)

Isekai or isekai-adjacent?

I realized today that a lot of my modern tastes were built specifically off the Digimon series (I was young when it first aired in the States), and later Final Fantasy X. That isekai vibe definitely stuck with me. I've started watching re:Zero recently and I'm back on that kick -

Are there any other particularly good games that have an isekai theme? Or close? I'm not particularly into games that rely on heavy fan-service. I don't mind it as long as it isn't a primary focus (ie I love Stellar Blade, but there's a lot more than hot people in that game). I have access to every modern console and most older consoles.

Cheers!

Hey y'all!

I'm looking for y'alls favorite horror games that will run natively on the Pocket 5. I generally go for fun < raw fear, but I do really enjoy being scared. I generally prefer titles where I'm not exclusively running away from threats (ie Amnesia or Outlast, even though I love both those games) but that's far from a hard rule. If the game has especially good story, puzzles, exploration etc then it's even less of a problem.

I've also wanted to get more into visual novels for some time, so good horror-leaning recs there would be lovely.

Cheers!
