Why don’t women in our country want to be independent?
First, I want to make it clear that this isn’t a generalization about all women in Bangladesh. I’ve had relationships, friendships, and worked with independent girls/women, so I know they exist.
As I was growing up as Gen Z, I thought so many things were changing because of the information age. But now that I’m in my 20s, I’m realizing that I might have been wrong about how much things have actually changed. I’m seeing many of the same patterns that existed in earlier generations.
I see Gen Z girls/women posting about marriage or looking for a financially independent partner while they’re not financially independent themselves. (There’s nothing wrong with that in theory.) But I’m genuinely confused about how that helps them. What I find more depressing is that some women don’t even seem to have the intention of becoming financially independent.
I don’t mean only financial independence. I also mean personal and emotional independence. And some women choosing to marry someone based primarily on their parents’ preferences. Why on earth would someone decide who they’re going to marry based on what their parents want? How can a relationship work when you can’t independently decide who you want as your life partner? Am I missing something?
This post is a personal observation, and I honestly don’t know whether this represents the majority of girls/women in Bangladesh. I hope it doesn’t. But seeing some women, especially within my generation, seemingly not wanting independence makes me question whether we’ve actually changed or whether we’re simply repeating many of the same patterns from the previous generation!
So I’m trying to get a real sense of the bigger picture regarding independence and dependency among today’s generation!!
