I've had an idea for a brass-jacketed slug filled with sodium or potassium metal floating around my head for ages now, and I'm finally starting to try to flesh it out. Here's some basics of the design I've come up with so far.
i. Group 1 metals have to be hermetically sealed from the air or else it risks spontaneous detonation. I could probably seal the brass jacket with wax, epoxy, or solder depending on the design but it still should be mostly covered by the jacket.
ii. The core must also be exposed on impact for it to have the desired effect.
iii. Group 1 metals generally have very low density and also act as a chemical payload so the goal is to maximize the volume of the reactive metal core.
ix. The jacket can probably be made using a custom press/stamp jig (order from an online CNC machining service?) and brass sheet, then the molten metal poured in.
x. I would prefer for it to be aerodynamically stable, and still accurate out of a smoothbore. most self-stabilizing shapes aren't volume efficient enough for my liking and would be too complex to stamp as a jacket, so I'm thinking fins extending into the powder chamber or something similar.
I'm looking for general advice, but I've also got a few specific questions.
Could it be feasible to make a jacket to rupture on impact, or would the jacket have to be open at the front?
Could a brass "skirt" around the base of the slug and surrounding the powder work as combo gas seal and drag-stabilization?
General tips and experience with online CNC services?
