Opinion on Routed Explorer

A local shop has this for sale for $2,999. Someone put a Floyd rose in there at one time. It’s a 1976 Explorer, one of the limited edition ones with the thicker neck. Would you guys go for this? I would be trading for it, not buying outright, just wondering about this value wise. I’m not sure if I could find someone local to take on the task of blocking this and making it convincing looking. I wouldn’t want to totally refinish it since I like the natural colored Explorers the most

EDIT: thanks guys I’ll regretfully pass on this one!

Low Frets on Gibson Ripper

Hey guys! I picked up this Ripper that someone had converted into “fretless.” The problem is, it looks like they just shaved down the tops of the frets rather than pulling them. They are flush with the fretboard and I don’t think I’ll be able to use a fret puller.

Any ideas on how to get them out so I can put new frets in?

“Fender” Bass V- Work in Progress

This is another custom-ish design I’ve been working on. It’s based heavily and loosely on the Fender Bass V which was a 5-string bass Fender put out in the late 60s. I always really liked the shape of that bass and decided to design a guitar version.

This is a short scale (24”) with a Jazzmaster bridge and trem. The control plate is shaped to accept a standard Mustang plate (need to get one). The custom pickguard is routed for a set Fender Performer pickups. The headstock is a loose Fender Swinger shape.

I sprayed this in a nitro Graffiti Yellow burst. I spray with aerosol cans so the burst was challenging but I’m happy with how it came out. Under all that paint is a base layer of shell pink.

Cosmetically I have a few things I still have to do. I am going to stain the fretboard darker and replace the dots with clay. I’d also like to do some artificial aging and checking to reveal with the shell pink base layer in spots.

Thank you for looking!

WIPs

I thought you guys would like to see a couple work in progress guitars. I’ve been building and refinishing guitars for the past couple years and these two are part of this year’s first batch. I spray outside so I need to wait for the weather to be ideal.

The left guitar is a Fender Maverick. I chose to go as vintage as possible for the body. The XII neck is one I found on sale at Warmoth. It’s fine and it’ll do for now but the 22 frets make it look extra long. I may swap it out one day. Anyway, I sprayed this in a very heavy aged Inca Silver nitro. Basically an Inca Silver base with layered aged clear. The idea was when the nitro wears with play it’ll reveal the lighter silver underneath. I’m going to string this with 6 strings and just leave the other 6 tuner holes blank.

The right one I’m super proud of. It’s my own design but based off an old Fender model called the Mando-Strat. Basically it was a mandolin with a Strat-ish neck. I really thought the body shape of that was interesting so I designed it to be a full scale (24”) guitar. I call in the Mandocaster. I went back and forth with trem options but thought a Mustang trem looked best. And I thought the XII pickups would be a cool sounding option with the short scale and overall vibe of the “mandolin.” To balance out the wide body and play off the pickups I went with a Maverick/Electric XII headstock custom built for 24” scale. I installed real clay dots. The trem isn’t screwed in yet so that’s why it looks lower on the body than where it’ll be actually placed.

This was sprayed with a nitro Candy Apple Red. I didn’t do any aging on this as I wanted it to look new-ish.

Thanks for looking and I’ll be sure to post final pics of these once I acquire all the parts and get them put together! More guitars to come as well

Help Identifying Pickups kit

Hey guys! I purchased a listing for an aftermarket Jaguar body that included these pickups. The seller thought they were either USA Fender Jag pickups or Lindy Fralins. The listing was cheap enough where I really just purchased for the body and the pickups were an afterthought.

Does anyone recognize the markings on these? My initial thought was that they may be squier jaguar pickups. Mainly because of the lack of cloth wiring. There is one black cloth wire that comes off one of these claws, but the rest of the wires are not cloth. Looks like one pickup reads “12000” and the other reads “11000.”

Long shot I know!

NGD- ‘77 Les Paul Custom

A local shop got this ‘77 Les Paul Custom in and I had to snag it. I was told the hardware on this was chrome from the factory. I opened it up and everything looks all original! It’s a great sounding and playing guitar. Sounds a bit more aggressive than my ‘68 RI. Also about a pound heavier at right about 10lbs 5oz. What a cool guitar, so stoked to own this .
