Do you guys know about Open Culture? It's a fantastic resource for free noir films.

This is a collection of thousands of movies in the public domain from around the world, containing works of famous directors like Fritz Lang, Tartovsky and Kurosawa. And it's not just ancient movies, either, as there are recent movies that were shot for the public domain, like a series of short prequels for Blade Runner 2049. If you scroll through this, you'll truly be surprised at some of the legendary directors it contains.

Anyways, they have an entire section dedicated to film noir and it contains several movies that get referenced here all the time (like Detour and Scarlet Street). Finding this website has provided me with a ton of content that I probably would never have gotten around to watching if it wasn't compiled for me.

(I tried to stick within the rules -- I'm not connected to this website, so it's not self-promotion, and it's all legal -- but please delete this post, mods, if I fell on the wrong side of caution.)

I quit Busparone. When can I expect to poop again?

I was on 20mg Busparone for many months, then was bumped up to 30mg and the side effects were horrific (I was having the side effects with the smaller dose, but they were tolerable). I'm just wondering how long it might take for the side effects to fade after I stopped taking it? Days? Weeks?

Crime movies where one group of criminals radically underestimates another group because they don't understand them?

I've always loved The Long Good Sunday with its depiction of London's top gangsters getting in over their head when they think it's no big deal to take on the IRA.

I don't know why, but I'm fascinated by the concept of all the ways criminal violence and politically-motivated violence are similar, yet different. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of many movies that feature the mob taking on freedom fighters, terrorists, etc.

But I'm also interested in crime movies that involve one group of criminals struggling to deal with a new group that moves into the area, with different ideas, strategies and violence. I've read quite a few books about first contact between national criminals and international criminals and it's always fascinating to me.

Any suggestions? (TV shows will also be welcomed.)

Shortness of breath after quitting smoking

I'm having trouble finding information about this: most of what I'm finding is people on reddit saying they experienced it.

My elderly mother has COPD and stopped smoking two weeks ago (on patches). Since then, she has occassionally experienced shortness of breath during basic activities (like walking).

After hearing that other people have experienced this, I'm not going to panic, but can anyone give me any information on what this is, how long it might last, and when it might become something to be concerned about?

America's newsman is taking off!

I was a bit shocked to see Owen Shroyer quoted in this article about the return of Screwworm, but I'm glad to see his dream of becoming America's greatest newscaster by talking shit in his garage is taking off!

https://www.rawstory.com/brooke-rollins-screwworm/

>An uncomfortable description of a threatening parasite by a Trump administration official is drawing startled reactions. > >Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins spoke at an oversight hearing on Thursday about the spread of the New World Screwworm that threatens cattle ranches. > >"It's a vexing challenge that we thought we had beaten in the 1970s," Rollins said. "You need about 400 million sterile flies per week to mate with the bad flies...the larva [of the screwworm] is what actually eats the flesh." > >... > >"NEW WORLD Screwworm. Totally fine," political commentator Owen Shroyer posted on X.

Recommend a show like Arrested Development

Can anyone recommend a show that's pure anarchic comedy, without characters mooning after each other, engaging in cloying emotional arcs or trying to teach lessons? Something like Arrested Development, Police Squad, Trial & Error, Year Of The Rabbit, Another Era and Ten-Year-Old Tom?

I'll try to avoid spoilers, but maybe they can't totally be avoided. I just finished watching Palm Springs and, while I liked it, it took me awhile to figure out my thoughts about the ending: I'm pretty sure bad things are going to happen to the main characters after Palm Spring ends.

I think the movie doesn't realize what it's foreshadowing. It goes for a joke ending, with the family that owns the pool showing up, but that actually highlighted the difference between the endings of Palm Springs and Groundhog Day.

In Groundhog Day, I think Bill Murray's character learned that every day is precious and that little things matter. In Palm Springs, they spent so many days (years? Centuries?) trapped in the time loop, being reckless and killing themselves without a second thought, that I don't think they'll be able to function in a world where they're vulnerable. They don't appreciate each day. They don't appreciate the little things. They're going to have to relearn what it's like to be vulnerable, what it means when every day is different and there are actual consquences (like the family returning).

Honestly, the movies and endings were very similar, but the lessons one character learned fill me with hope and the lessons the other characters learned fill me with dread.

What are your thoughts on this? (Also, what other "stuck in a time loop" movies are there? Run Lola Run maybe counts, but all the rest I can think of are Sci Fi, so it's not an unexplained phenomenon.)
