Fixing open bite without surgery or retractive orthodontics

Is there any way to fix an open bite (posterior and anterior, with occlusion only on 2nd molars) without jaw surgery or extraction/refractive orthodontics?

I dont have the classic "long face gummy smile" rather the opposite, a short face, but I've developed/worsened an existing open bite in the last few months. It isnt that severe but it is causing a lot of discomfort eating, TMJ problems, constant jaw clenching and trouble keeping mouth closed comfortably.

I also have a narrow palate, im open to palatal expansion like FME or MARPE

Also regarding invisalign, I'd ideally want to stay away from it due to what I've heard online, and also the fact that I'd need to wear retainers for life.

Im open to jaw surgery, but it wont be possible anytime soon atleast within the next 1 or 2 years, so I need to reliably fix this problem for the time being

With braces there is also the issue of the jaw side profile looking more recessed, or the face looking shorter and aesthetic impacts like this so Id be aiming for the most aesthetically possible option possible

What do you guys think? Im in constant pain and would really love to hear your thoughts.

Involuntary swallowing reflexes, pain when swallowing, difficulty swallowiny

Anyone else have sudden involuntary sharp swallowing reflexes? I've been having these for a long time, esepcially because I constantly feel air hunger and out of breath, and when the swallow are triggered it really hurts the muscles right under the jaw between the chin and neck, and also near the TMJ, under the ear.

And near the masseters and pterygoid. Anyone else feel this?

How to deterministically, reliably extract a type of structured data from multiple/any website(s) which can have different DOM structure, class names etc.?

For chrome extensions which extract data from a website and store it in a structured schema, assuming this is a specific type of data, and that multiple sites can have multiple schemas or the way the DOM is arranged, class names etc. -- how do you guys implement this determinsitically?

I am obviously aware about using AI and LLMs to process that data for structuted outputs, but doing this at scale would not be cost effective, even using cheap alternatives like Groq.

Is the solution just to hardcode deterministic, site-specific parsers? Would love to hear from you guys!

CBCT scan report of TMJ - is this serious?

Hey everyone, got a CBCT scan done a few weeks ago, almost a month. had been facing chronic tmj and dental issues for at least 3-4 months now, and i often had clicking an dpopping sounds and felt like i had to move my jaw side to side to "snap " it back in place. i also have a lot of neck stiffness, tightness and pain,e speically when chewing. the pain is more on the right side, and wen opening my mouth wide. it is also near the SCM muscle, just under the year and sometimes at the corner of the mandible.

Here is the report, and I was praying that I don't have any degenerative damage or anything like condylar resorption, boneloss, etc. but unfortunately the worst of my fears has come true -- how serious is this? will this have a permanent effect, espeically on the appearance of the jaw and ramus? I also seem to hav edeveloped/worsened an open bite (anterior) over these few months and the right side of my jaw has impacted wisdom teeth.

Please note the scan appears to be incomplete according to them.

CBCT TMJ findings:

https://ibb.co/YFKWp3m4

  • Bilateral flattening/remodelling of the mandibular condylar heads.
  • Left condyle: flattening of the medial and lateral cortical surfaces.
  • Right condyle: flattening of the medial, lateral, and superior cortical surfaces.
  • No associated sclerosis or definite erosive changes identified on either side.
  • A cortical irregularity/discontinuity was reported at the superior aspect of one condylar head, although the report’s side labelling appears inconsistent.
  • No significant cortical irregularity or discontinuity was identified on the opposite side.
  • Joint-space measurements could not be calculated because the condyles were not completely included in the field of view.
  • The articular eminences were not included.
  • The scan lacked calibrated voxel-spacing data, so reliable measurements in millimetres could not be obtained.
  • Radiographic impression: bilateral degenerative osseous/remodelling changes of the TMJs, described as more pronounced on the right.
  • Evaluation was limited because only part of each TMJ was captured.
  • The articular discs cannot be assessed on CBCT; MRI may be considered if disc displacement or other soft-tissue pathology is suspected.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Joint spaces could not be calculated because the condyles were not completely included in the FOV.
  • Articular eminence and full condylar heads were not completely visualized.
  • Reliable linear measurements could not be obtained because voxel spacing was not calibrated.
  • Articular disc and soft-tissue pathology cannot be assessed on CBCT.

tmj splint - any benefits, or potentially worsen bite and symptoms?

i've seen a lot of conflicting opinions regarding splints given to people here by orthodontists and that it actually messed up or worsened their TMJ and bite further.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts, especially from people who have undergone such treatment.

Is bone loss/resorption and degeneration (including changes to facial structure and bite) seen in most TMJ cases?

I've had this kind of pain on the right side mostly for the past 2-3 months, this all started with wisdom tooth pain and now i have the pain in between the masseters and mandible on the right side of my face, near the back. Also near the condyle and TMJ.

I did grind my teeth during childhood but never had to visit any orthodontist for any sort of crowding, and did not have any teeth extracted. My bite might be slightly open. I'm worried that this might be causing permanent damage to the bone and might cause loss/resoprtion and change my facial structure as well? Would love to hear some opinions on how likely it is (I'm 18 Male). And this coinceidentally started after I started chewing with the front teeth more and be more aware of my chewing and swallowing patterns and tongue posture.

Throwaway for obvious reasons.

International student, first year CS co-op. Failed two courses in 1A (CS 135, MATH 137), retook them in 1B along with the rest of my 1B courses. Failed one more course in 1B (MATH 136) but passed CS. Still waiting on 137, I might pass that but not enough to bring up the CAV/TAV enough to matter probably.

Current CAV is around 54%. Was placed on academic probation after 1A. Based on my W26 grades, my TAV will likely land in the high 50s to low 60s almost certainly below the 65% needed for probation extension.

also worth noting, recently diagnosed with ADHD, haven't started medication yet. Haven't registered with AccessAbility yet but planning to.

I understand the standing outcomes from Policy 3.4 are basically:

  • CAV ≥ 60% → clear probation (not happening)
  • TAV ≥ 65% → probation extended (very unlikely based on my numbers)
  • CAV ≥ 50% but didn't clear → may be transferred to Mathematical Studies (FLM)
  • Below all thresholds → FRW

So FLM seems most likely for me. A few questions for anyone who's been through this or knows the process:

  1. How does the S&P Committee actually decide between FLM and FRW for borderline cases? Is the 3.5 discretion clause ("unlikely to profit from further study") used often, or is it rare?
  2. Has anyone successfully transferred from Mathematical Studies back into CS or another Honours program? What did it take?
  3. Does registering with AccessAbility before the standing review actually make a difference in how S&P weighs your case, or does it only matter going forward?
  4. Any international students dealt with this? My study permit situation is tied to staying enrolled, so FLM vs FRW has immigration implications beyond just academics.

Not looking for "you should have studied harder" ( I know). Looking for practical advice from people who've navigated this or similar situations.

Thanks
